Poker GAF, the thread

I know somebody who insists on playing Texas Hold-em where nobody bets until after the flop!! There's no blinds either, just an ante.

Everybody who plays it under his rules says that "poker" is pretty much all luck, but of course it's nearly all luck if you've taken away 90% of your ability to figure the state of your opponents' hands.

They don't see the point in the betting round before the flop, and how it assists in your analysis of the situation as it stands after the flop.

That's a horrible way to play the game.

This just happened to me today. That's me on the bottom with AA. Lost to AK after a runner runner straight. Ugh.

Full tilt fn poker:

Well I have been playing online poker for while and have cashed out a few times but nothing big.. Well I just recently went back to Full Tilt to try out rush poker. I deposited 10 and got it up to 44 playing the micro limits and cashing in some of the dollar tourneys.

Guess where I am at now 2.04:lol .. I have become addicted to the MTT. I have been able to outlast 8k people and feel I shouldn't have a problem making the money no matter how big the field, I just can't seem to make the big money.

There were two times where I was in the money and above chip average so I was focused on making the final table. I felt I was playing some of my best poker that day. So in one hand right before the break, I get rockets and I am hoping for a raise. Betting gets to my right and guy raises very high but not all-in, which when you have rockets usually means KK. So I go all-in and the flop is low cards, turn another low card... you know the end.

Second instance with the same situation was I had KK and was again even closer to making the final table. I raise and someone goes all-in.. he was shorter stack so Im sure he was desperate and he admitted he was.. But he has 33.. flop he makes his set.. All I needed was the board to pair higher then the 3 and I still could have won that .. no luck.. and I got kicked the balls all the way out.

I am done with FTP for a while. My biggest problem with that site is that I seem to miss way too many flops. So I am bluffing way too much instead of playing poker. Hardly any hands go beyond the flop because too many people miss. There is a big difference in the hands over at Pokerstars.. But its online poker, I may be saying the same thing about Pokerstars in a few days.

Currently on a streak of 8 consecutive cashes between 6 Double or Nothings, one 24th-place finish in a 500-person capped MTT and one Double Shootout satellite win to the Sunday Million. I effectively turned $5 into a bankroll of $294 in just over 24 hours built on a foundation of Double or Nothing play. Going to stick with the $20 tables until I lose one. Many thanks!
I'm up to over $450 now.

For those of you dabbling with the Double or Nothing SNGs, I encourage you to try the higher dollar levels just to get a feel for how much tighter the table plays at a $50 buy-in versus $5, $10 or $20. I don't encourage you to play them regularly but it actually does help your game at the lower levels once you've successfully prevailed at the higher amounts. These really do get easier the more you play and I'm seeing a handful of people play a bunch of tables simultaneously. I'm getting comfortable with the $20 level but I'm not sure I'm ready to play more than one.

My big winfalls have actually come from the Double Shootout satellites. What's cool about these is that while a $10 SNG will only net you $45 for finishing in 1st place... you can bank $215 for the same investment in these by simply clearing through the first level (which is typically a 2-to-4 player round) and then simply finishing in the Top 2 at the final table. A lot of the same strats from the Double or Nothings will come into play there and you really can't go wrong for that return on investment.

Win the satellite, unregister from the tourney and then play Double or Nothings to convert the Tournament $ into currency and additional winnings.

Now that I've got some $$ to play with I'm going to try and hone my multi-table tourney play at some low buy-in amounts and develop strats that work effectively there.

B-Rad, are you playing double or nothing with turbo or regular blind lengths?

I had a double or nothing hot streak like that a month or two ago, was winning probably 9 out of every 10, which carried on for a few weeks and I made maybe $500. Now I'm winning maybe 3 or 4 out of every 10. Dunno why, just bad luck I think. Like last night, I have a pair of 7s, flop is 9 7 3 off-suit, I push all-in. He has pocket aces and hits an ace on the river. A TON of those lately - my play wasn't bad, just not getting the luck.

The weekly home game my GF and I play in is starting to freak me out. These guys are really into reading each other's tells, and the accuracy is uncanny.

One time I had pocket aces, the call comes around to me and I min raise. Only one other person calls me, so we're heads up. Both the flop and the turn don't look like anything that can beat me, and since the guy I'm heads up against is notoriously a big pusher, I keep checking thinking he's going to see me as weak and try to price me out, then hit him with the aces. He doesn't bite, finally I bet 4x the big blind on the river and he folds. The guy next to me then goes, "Okay, let's see those aces." The fuck? How? Maybe my slow play was a little obvious (min raises usually never work), but still to call my pocket aces? Crazy.

Another time the small blind to my right folded to my big blind because he thought I was going to raise his call because I was in a "betting posture." I don't think I moved an inch. Didn't reach for my chips, didn't shift forward, didn't think I did anything telling at all. But he was right.

Big pot late in the game, one guy folded to another's big push because he said he rocked in his chair when the turn card came out, and he never rocks in his chair, so he must've been happy. Again, he was right.

Had to be 4 or 5 other instances of that tonight when someone called out someone else's barely noticeable smirk or squint and accurately predicted their situation. All this game-within-a-game stuff is fun and interesting, but it's pretty intimidating, too. I think I'm gonna wear a fucking deep sea diver's helmet to the game next Thursday.

I've still been plugging away at my 2 dollar buy-in, multi-table tourneys (6 man). 3 top ten finishes in the past week.

Frustrating because I am so close to the big money (400-500 dollars) but usually walk away with 50 or 60 dollars instead. I'm just not playing tight enough when I get down to crunch time and am often pushing all my chips in on bad reads or hunches.

Also frustrating, because having to wade through 2200 people to get to the final 10 takes about 6 hours. But, I'll keep doing it until I win one of these things.

Even if you don't think you're doing anything, you easily could be. You really need to pay close attention to everything you're doing - in that sort of game, it sounds like you can easily set up your opponents into reading something entirely different.

One PokerStars tourney I'll throw out there that took me by surprise today is the $11 Turbo sat tourney for the Sunday Million they have each week at 3:45pm. They have 100 seats guaranteed to start and then add additional ones as they go based on buy-ins.

When I normally enter these big satellite MTTs I plan to cash out my ticket and call it a day. But because this one was running parallel to the actual start of the Sunday Million, they just bump everyone over to the big tourney once you qualify.

So I find myself unintentionally playing a $215 buy-in tourney for 5 hours tonight and doing quite well. Was as high as 21st place at around the 3-hour mark. Ended up cashing out for close to $500 for my $11 investment.

Given the forced "shove" to the table with the big boys I'll probably try this satellite route more often. You can even sat into the $11 tourney for less if you're really thrifty. Great way to wind up playing in the biggest weekly online MTT with a take home prize of $250,000 for 1st with little up-front commitment.

Well I know what I'm doing next Saturday :D

Also not so angry at poker as I made quite a bit of money over this weekend. Helps to have full houses when they have flushes :D

Had a blast watching the final table via an online gamecast last year (while playing my own weekly live game oddly enough). Almost every hand that went to showdown wound up with the underdog sucking out. Exciting stuff!

Most people figure Racener is the best bet to win it all. I'll be cheering for Jarvis and Duhamel as they're Canadians.

Coverage of the Final 18 being widdled down to the November Nine airs Tuesday night on ESPN. Worth watching if only for the legendary hand between Affleck and Duhamel that made him the chip leader.

Yeah pay close attention to what you do and throw in some fake tells. Just do a whole bunch of random stuff at times so people find it hard to read you. Also, frequently change up your betting patterns. I'm notorious for being really tight-fisted, so I'll bluff with high bids every once in a while just to scare people off the pot.

Ya I've been watching the final table for the past few years live. Last years took quite a bit of time :lol Best part are the side commentary from the Pros they rope in and not knowing the hole cards.

That confrontation between Jarvis and Mizrachi was absolutely sick. Especially given the way the board developed after the all-in & call.

Ace-Queen of Diamonds vs. Pocket Nines
Two Queens on the flop made a set, a third 9 popped up on the Turn to make a boat for the 9s and then an Ace hit the River to make a bigger full house for the other player.

Mizrachi had Ace-Queen and eliminated Jarvis in 8th place. He now has a monster chipstack to play with.

Coverage of the final table is currently under way on ESPN3. I can hook you guys up with an online stream if you need one (or if you're outside of the United States).

well I'm glad this thread got bumped, had no idea the FT was today lol.

Watching this really gives u an idea of how much ESPN edits the main programme.

Final table chip counts at the dinner break...

1) Michael Mizrachi - 50,525,000
2) Jonathan Duhamel - 47,500,000
3) Joseph Cheong - 30,350,000
4) John Racener - 25,675,000
5) Filippo Candio - 23,525,000
6) Jason Senti - 22,775,000
7) John Dolan - 19,250,000

Play resumes at 11:15pm Eastern / 8:15pm Pacific on ESPN3.
Only 2 eliminations since play started 7 hours ago.

Final table chip counts at what will likely be the final break of the day...

Joseph Cheong - 66,750,000
Jonathan Duhamel - 56,550,000
Michael Mizrachi - 39,500,000
Filippo Candio - 29,950,000
John Racener - 26,550,000

I have no clue who's most likely to go out next.
I'm thinking Mizrachi but it could be just about anyone.

Epic blowup from Joseph Cheong :(
Unbelievable. Was he bluffing all night and finally got caught? Was he just fatigued?
Who can say?
Final 2 is now decided... it will be Duhamel vs. Racener heads up on Monday night for the title.

GO CANADA! :D

Rooting for him.
Also doesn't seem like a giant douchebag.

On right now ESPN3.com

Going to watch this until it finishes and then hop on FTP :lol

edit: Well it is over

Duhamel won, shouldn't have taken nearly this long
