I don't think a rebate check is part of this package. Increased food stamps, unemployment insurance, aid to states to cover Medicade and other shortfalls, medical IT investment, and the school and bridge/road infrastructure component. IIRC there's a chunk devoted to green energy as well.

i thought there was something in there for individuals as well, but i forget where i read it so basically i'm of no help

This shouldn't surprise anyone who knows Obama's history. Obama himself is very very liberal yet looking at his past his cabinet should be not shocking.

When Obama won the position of Editor in Chief of Harvard Law Review a lot of african americans were excited at Harvard, they felt they'd finally get a respectable amount of editorial jobs to write for the Review. Obama did not at all increase their representation on the staff. Instead he TRIPLED the amount of conservative writers. He likes opposing viewpoints. Obama is a very anti-groupthink kind of leader.
That's exactly why I fell in love with him.

Caroline Kennedy actually has a real education unlike Palin who went to 4284928498 different colleges to get a bachelor's in JOURNALISM.
She's being gifted a fucking Senator's seat without actually platforming on or for anything. At least Paterson went through the Albany grind for years before little Spitzer decided to commandeer the ship and drive it right into the FBI.

Cheebs said:
And Caroline is running for senator not vice president of the US.
She ain't runnin' fo' shit
A lot of senators have no elected experience before becoming senator. Ted Kennedy anyone? Or even John McCain for the other side.
Yes, ideally I clearly desire all elected officials to acquire the seat through nepotism or brutal torture.

Seriously WHAT THE FUCK
I don't recall him ever being in favor of legalization. What I heard him mention was decriminalization and maybe some support for medical marijuana. They picked the worst question to answer though :(

Huh? Obama is not "very liberal". He is a centrist; he gathers 'opposing viewpoints' (obviously leaving out the 'far left') and the goes for the 'neutral middle'. The worst form of groupthink imo.

First batch of questions answered..

Sorry potheads :lol

well he never said he was for legalization, only decriminalization.

either way, it probably won't be well until his (presumtive) second term until he'll act on it.
edit: and actually i dont think decriminalization is all that politically unpopular, as prison overcrowding of non-violent offenders is getting to be a serious problem, blah blah ect ect

Coleman's lead erased says Star Tribune analysts

According to the analysis, if all of the ballots on which challenges have been withdrawn were awarded to candidates as Ballot Challenge readers awarded them, Franken would hold a 246-vote lead heading into today's Canvassing Board meeting. The Board will begin resolving some 2,260 remaining challenges at noon, with Franken's challenges outnumbering Coleman's by 224.
Please pull through for me, MN. This can be like my Christmas present.

Aparrantly the review of challenged ballots will be live streamed, so junkies can watch every vote come through and track the progress. (Haven't found a stream link yet.) It's supposed to start in 15 minutes.

Obama said something in today's press conference that had me grinning ear to ear. I'm paraphrasing, but it was essentially that we need to "reshape our culture to value intellectual achievement again." I'm like, yes YES we'll have a President who thinks being smart is a good thing. The past eight years lowered the collective IQ of this country to drooling idiot levels.

I cannot believe Gov. Paterson is seriously considering anointing Caroline Kennedy.

I can believe that everyone is up in arms about it but it's hard for me to see much reason behind it. The concept of "qualifications" for serving in the Senate is significantly less relevant than it even is for President, and the system operates in practice as a semi-oligarchy anyway. Clinton and RFK both carpetbagged their way into this seat; at least Caroline Kennedy actually lives in New York!

My biggest objection is really that I'd like someone in the seat that would pay attention to Upstate, but I think that was basically a lost cause from the beginning.

Give me one reason why Caronline should become a Senator that does not involve her being a Kennedy.

This shit is fascinating.

Nice to see them making sure every ballot is viewable to the public.

And the first ballot.....challenged by Franken. Challenge rejected.

It will be hilarious to see some of the more crazy ones where somebody was just fucking with people.

McCain was a US Representative for four years before becoming a Senator. Check your facts, sir.

Yeah I can't wait for those. What was that crazy one, "pod people" or something? These guys are so deadpan their reading should be great.

So far Franken +1 and Coleman -1, for a net pick up of two for Franken.

wow how many of these ballots are there?

and w00t if the star trib readership is even somewhat close.

also why are all of franken's challenges first?

pfft, what has he done for me lately?

Ask not what services they actually manage to provide at your expense, ask only what more you can sacrifice for the collective!

Or something pretty close to that. ;P

Come on, it's political suicide and you know it. I think it will happen eventually, but it will have to come from a group of representatives or something probably.

More like enough cities / state legislatures / state referendums allowing medical marijuana and decriminalizing to a point where it becomes extremely out of sync with Federal policy.

This isn't the Star Trek thread Jaydubya.

I think Franken reduced his count to like 400 or something. I think Coleman had like double that. But they might have changed their numbers.

Stoney Mason said:
This stream shit is awesome :lol
oh absolutely, the lady was for letting the ballot count then started talking about consistency and asked for the original, and yeah, this is fun to listen to.

i dont want to read a note! i dont want to read a post it note!

in other news, it's good to know that they've started with franken challenges and so it's not random, they're going through all the franken challenges first

Because the voters are electing him?

I think his point is though if voters are able to make a selection based on a wide range of qualities that exist beyond just past political experience why shouldn't a governor have that same discretion.

The differences are twofold:

1.) The governor is suppose to be filling a vacancy, not appointing a Senator for a full term. It's the voters of New York that decide who will be elected for a full term, and:

2.) Fraken's qualifications, or lack thereof, are entirely due to his own actions during life. Caroline's are entirely due to another's actions.

I agree, but I don't think she would be considered if it were not for her last name.

What's one reason that Al Franken should be a Senator besides, um... er... hmmm....
That's for the people to decide, innit? I have no problem with Caroline Kennedy running in an actual election, but appointing her to the US Senate out of the blue gets my goat. Hell, I don't even know what her policy leanings are, let alone if she has a command of NYS issues.

My tally since the break.

Franken
2
Coleman
2
Other
3

The 3 others were ballots that looked like a vote for Coleman but the board could not access the voter intent because of a bad mark.

If I had to choose between dynasties, I'd still prefer the Kennedys over the Cuomos. Andrew Cuomo's big claim to fame while AG has been attacking one Internet service after another -- newsgroups, facebook, myspace, etc.

is anyone else watching the tribune feed? The guy doing the motions doesnt get a vote? who is he? I'm confused...

That, and jeez, if i were there, i'd be giving more votes to Coleman then these people are.

guy in the middle is the SoS. he only votes as a tiebreaker.

"The board is a five-person panel consisting of Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Eric Magnuson, Justice G. Barry Anderson, Ramsey County District Court Chief Judge Kathleen Gearin, and Assistant Chief Judge Edward Cleary"

basically he chose 2 SC justices and 2 other judges (2 D's 2 R's?), and he's a D. though it seems to be going very smoothly

thanks, its very interesting to see. They pared down the challenges but there are still a few "why was this challenged" votes in there. Basically any vote that is thrown out is a +1 for Franken, and any vote that is given to Franken is basically a +2 for him. (Out of the Franken batch of course)

And Ritchie has been going out of his way to avoid appearing partisan. He delegated the selection of the panel to two judges.

Ritchie essentially punted. He let Chief Justice Eric Magnuson pick the two Supreme Court Justices and he let Ramsey County District Chief Judge Kathleen Gearin pick the two District Court Judges. Magnuson, a very partisan Republican who is a long time friend and former law partner of Gov. Tim Pawlenty, picked himself and partisan Republican Justice G. Barry Anderson. Gearin picked herself and Judge Edward Cleary (lawyers I have spoken have faith that Gearin and Cleary will be impartial). That leaves us with a Board made up of two partisan Republicans, one partisan Democrat who is bending over backwards to be non-partisan, and two independents.

This makes the rulings which have so far favored Franken that much harder to paint as being made by a partisan panel.

I like the two judges on the right. :D

Which are the democrats and which are the republicans?

The lady I bet is a democrat. Sadly she is annoying.
