Poll: how many of you think next gen graphics will impress them?

Its the little things that impress me now.

Bad Company 2: the map Atacama Desert features swaying trees while in a sand storm combined with with the intense lighting, that map just blows me away.

I haven't been impressed with a game's graphics since I first played Mario 64.

So, probably not.

But if developers can come up with new and more interesting gameplay ideas, that would be very impressive to me.

You know, I initially didn't think that this generation was that impressive.. but looking at things like Alan Wake and Heavy Rain compared to God of War 2 or Riddick.. it really is quite unbelievable how much better looking games are this generation.

So yes, I expect to be impressed.

Not fuck'n likely.

I want games I can play in my sleep, I'll call them "dream games", and graphics won't matter.

Of course it will, we will have infinite detail and horrible art!

No, seriously, I hope it will, but I think it will be through 3D visuals more than anything else.

most likely NOT

especially with all the abuse of normal maps and having unrealistic black shadows everywhere and contrast up the ass

I don't think next-gen graphics will be any better with the trend this gen went with normal map abuse and fucked contrast everywhere

I believe so. Hopefully, since this console gen is shit, being that the processing power did not properly accompany the increase in resolution. Which is why I am nowadays an elite smug pc playing bastard.

No.

As is made evident by PC gaming, games aren't going to look a whole lot better other than higher poly counts, resolutions, and fps. Yeah, it'll be a significant leap. It won't be impressing, though. Especially since I'm transitioning slowly into next gen already with PC games.

Of course graphics in the next gen can impress me, especially artistically.

No shit, I'm still impressed by the graphics of Metroid Prime (currently gaming on Wii as a part of the MP:Trilogy), good made graphics can impress me no matter how dated they are.

Yes.

It's been 5 years since this generation was unveiled, and we haven't seen as much as a hint of the next generation. So yes, it'll be a bigger jump than this one and it will impress.

This brings up an interesting realization:

Next generation will provide the most massive relative jump in graphics ever in gaming history, since for the first time there will be no loss of performance increase to higher resolution necessary - 1080P will do, and this resolution will be well explored by PS3 and 360 towards the latter half of the generation anyway. Expecting to be floored by the next gen demos.

...slightly overoptimistic with the 1080P part though

I'd expect tesselation to be almost "standard" next generation. No real need for lots of normal maps when you've got enough real geometry to create an incredibly close replica of your source art.

since the dx11 tessellation and crysis 2 tech already impress the hell out of me, I'm going to say that i'll be even more impressed in a few years.

so yes

I'm pretty sure I will be. Of course the jump will be even smaller than it was from last gen, but I'm sure developers and artists out there will come up with new techniques and implementations of their art to come up with even more complex, realistic and great looking assets. I hope this gen will carry on for quite a while more, but at the same time I can't wait to see how the industry develops further in graphical work. Not to forget that more CPU power theoratically opens up the room for larger worlds, more interactions, animations, physics, etc etc.

Not so likely, but I'm older now.

Going from 16-bit to 3-D was face melting. PS1 to PS2 was like 8-bit to 16-bit. This gen is just only now starting to impress me. It just really feels, other than HD, better textures and copious amounts of bloom, that this gen hasn't been really that much of a huge step forward.

i dunno man.... Resident Evil..., Gonker poop boss fight, god of War, etc. and i've never seen a video game character use deodorant (maybe heavy rain).

how about feel-o-rama?

Yes.

But I really, really hope I'll be more impressed by next-gen A.I, physics, storytelling and gameplay than just the graphics.. if all we see next-gen are more shooters with a new coat of paint I'll fucking rage. I can count on one hand the games that have blown me away this gen, and none of them have done so with graphics.

(Portal, Braid, Mirror's Edge, Bioshock.. maybe Mass Effect)

This.

As others said it before, it really could be that next gen has the focus on the immersion and controlling rather than on the presentation of the games.

There are already so many benchmark AAA games that can't display full 720p resolution and / or run at a constant 60fps. And they have pop-in, blurry textures, frame rate drops, visible stair-stepping (lack of appropriate AA), and the list goes on and on. In order to deliver smooth 3D (I have little doubt that it will become more mainstream in the next generation) you need twice the rendering capabilities, so that would ideally be 1080p x 120fps (60 for each eye). If the mega-budget AAA games can't completely overcome these shortcomings at this stage of the game, I doubt that it's due to a lack of programming capability or knowledge - it's because the hardware is limited.

You look at CGI at the movie level and then you look at playable in-game graphics - there's a huuuge gap. I don't see the ability of new hardware to push graphical boundaries disappearing any time soon. Will the gap between this gen and next gen be arguably smaller that previous generations? - possibly. However, I remember reading the same argument about the original XBOX versus the 360 before it was launched, and in no way do I feel like this generation is lacking in improvements over the last gen, and I'm sure the same will be true for the next gen.

As someone who still marvels at PS2 games, I can safely say I couldn't care less about what next gen will bring. Too many of today's games already approach uncanny valley. No thanks.

I will say the stuff Rock Star is doing with LA Noire, i.e. being actually able to fully render actor's likenesses, make-up, attire, voice in 3-d without the use of traditional mo-cap has got me really excited.

Higher quality textures, movement articulated to the point where body language can be communicated, and jaggy-free environments are what I want.

But if it's not backed up by good gameplay (and better writing in story-driven games!) then it's all for nothing. I'd rather have a game with "okay" graphics and an incredible story.

I'm sure they will impress me in stills. Then I'm going to play the game and we'll have the same awkward animations and clipping problems that we do now. Miyamoto said:

"What role does realism play in videogames I ask myself. Is this image more interesting? Sometimes.. however, what if a "detailed" hand with 5 fingers is catching a bottle but the fingers pass right through it? Is this still realistic? Rather than to show each meticulous and tiny detail of a finger, it is more important to make the end action look more credible by working on the movement and functionality of the arms and the hand in relation to the object."

Pretty much how I feel. Environment/character interactions have barely progressed beyond the last generation consoles, just look at the jumping in Oblivion or Niko's absurd turning in GTA 4.

The vast majority of PC games at the moment are just console ports so of course they aren't going to look that much better. If you look at games built from the ground up for the PC such as Crysis and Arma II, the difference is significant.

I haven't been "wowed" by graphics of any sort since like the beginning of the PS2/GC/Xbox era. And I think the last game that really impressed me in this area at all was Super Robot Wars Z, a 2D game fo the PS2. :lol

So, no. As long as things do more to stay the same, I don't think I'm going to be moved at all. Let's see if devs can do more to allow art styles to drive the games, instead of relying on HD, 3D or whatever is going to be the new thing in the years to come.

I think next gen's AAA titles will impress me.

The rest of them will barely show a difference, imo.

So I don't know, put me down for not so likely. Aside from the big release here and there, I don't think we'll see a huge improvement.

the smell of the jungle in jungley games (KING KONG, UNCHARTED, etc.), ash and rust and rotten food in FALLOUT, car exhausts and burning rubber in BURNOUT. . .

hell, i'd probably buy COOKING MAMA if it had smell-o-vision :lol

Don't care, and I want a few more years before I have to think about it.

but you're thinking about it right now!

I think Braid is the most creative game this generation. Not only that, but the art and music is amazing. Plot is left for interpretation.

Most important of all, it's still 2D.

Don't care to be honest. The only thing that bothers is inconsistencies, such as pop in, dropped frame rates, etc. I always find those jarring.

I don't care.

I'd rather developers and platform holders prioritize innovative design, backwards compatibility, and making games that I can control with my friggin mind.
