So far so good, I'm able to buy/play the games without being restricted to just one hardware, no matter how shitty it is (XB1/PS4), that's all I really ever needed. Still waiting to see how the studia acquisitions will turn out in the longer term, after they finish their projects they started way before being bought by MS, and start from scratch under their umbrella.

As someone who hasn't ever owned an Xbox system, though can admit the OG Xbox was a really good system, I'd say he's doing a great job at making my decision even easier to stick with PS and PC.

I think the quality of games has dropped dramatically under his guidance. On PS, if a game takes 4-5 years to come out, it's usually of high quality. On Xbox, since Phil took over, it either gets cancelled or you get a mediocre product. Look at Scalebound, Crackdown 3, and the Halo reveal for examples.

He is the best CEO of the three. But people need to understand he is not the head of MS.

Phil has undeniably changed Xbox's public perception for the better. After the disaster that was the Pre-launch period of the Xbox One, and the baggage that came with it. Phil was just what Microsoft needed for Xbox at the time. He killed Kinect, removed the Xbox Live Gold requirement for Streaming apps, and pushed for things like Game Pass and Play Anywhere.

But, I still don't think Xbox is back at full strength just yet. The Series X and Xbox Game Studios are still big question marks that still need to be answered.

He talks far too much noise. There's too much hype and then little delivery. See the first xsx show and then halo. Takes shots at his competitors. Etc. stfu. If your product is good it'll speak for itself, there is no need to trash talk your rivals.

see Sony. Say nothing. Put up a show people are Generally happy with Shut up again.

4/10

This gen has been a disaster game wise. The best exclusive for me was sunset overdrive followed by forza horizon 3 (which is really good and I hate racing games usually)

I love what they're doing with game pass and the studio's they acuired,so the future does look bright. But, will see.

PC support keeps getting better and better. Lots of potential from the new studios. Studios are given time to make games now, no more 2 year rigid dev cycles. Console hardware is focused on power, not shitty side gimmicks. Gamepass is phenomenal. Full BC is now a staple for the Xbox brand. Giving players options on where and how they want to play.

So far for me he seems to be doing just fine. He seems to rile up the hive every time he says something prompting concern posts so he must be doing something right.

Gaming-wise, his or his management's vision is stale and doesn't match the level of quality of Sony, which is obviously the most crucial; however, he looks like trying and not afraid of taking risks. PC support, Game Pass and all these new ideas indisputably good for all gaming industry and I like him for these decisions. Hoping that they can improve their ability to produce quality pieces with first party studios, because everyone benefits.

I think this conversation is premature. They just expanded their portfolio of studios enormously over the past couple of years, and we're not really gonna start seeing the real results of that for a couple more I suspect.

Give it time. Games take time. It'll loosen up soon enough and then we'll have plenty of games to judge quality from.

Up till this point it's been a battle to change course for the entire platform. It's now the fun begins.

If in a few years we sit here with tales of development hell, cancelled games and shitty games, then we can judge him and them fair and square.

But right now is too soon.

He has been in charge for most of the Xbox One generation, there is plenty to judge him on already and whether he has been effective. Simply echoing the sounds people want to hear is not leadership, far from it.

The guy keeps lying.
This is Phil Spencer, he is as good as you can get for someone at the executive level, Shawn Layden was a complete joke and yet PS4 thrived despite him being one of the worst execs.
Phil did not do the most important thing about the xbox when he got the helm: get studios, let them make games so that the platform is a must own, buy third party games if you need to. Even with the always online and weaker console, the one could strive as the console that doesn't play third party titles as well, but has a ton of amazing exclusives, at this point they barely sell any of them.

And now the latest xbox series reveal was horrible, they boasted about it as a response to Sony's PS5 reveal as if they knew they were going to hit it out of the park--it's their second attempt at revealing their 12Tf monster of a console--yet we have not seen anything as good looking as Mario Kart for some reason! They opened the show with a Halo gameplay trailer that probably killed the franchise, then proceeded to show us a couple of nice looking CGI trailers (in response to Sony's show where everything apparently ran on the PS5).

All the feel good "consumer friendly" policies are sideshows at best, a complete distractions from the most important thing at worst.

He should have gotten the studios first and then proceed with improving the services (or put different task forces for different aspects of the business). We have waited after Phil to deliver for 7 years now?

The more time passes, the less I'm convinced Xbox can make a genuine comeback and flourish like back in the 360 days.

It's all words up until now. Sure the hardware seems nice, but that just 1 piece of the puzzle. I haven't seen ANY games I want to play on Xbox, no exclusives, nada.

Please blow me away with nextgen Fable and I will gladly buy the Series X.

If the multiplayer is terrible that what kills the franchise,

So far I'm just waiting to see what happens and will wait to buy either PS5 or Series X, Microsoft have gone in a better direction, as a recent parent that is looking to save money and has a huge backlog the Xbox is looking better for me to start off with and even then I'm not pressured to purchase

Also new studios need time to develop games as next gen will take significantly longer to develop for, we will have to wait and see I hate not having E3 or hands on impressions like we have with consoles in the past!

360 at this point looks like a flash in the pan .... MS have more flops than hits in the console space.

And for the 360 being their greatest success, that gen was Sony's worst. That adds a little perspective.

Phil has achieved very little.

At best, he is an empty suit.

We need a CEO for Xbox who is aggressive in the market for quality new games and competing. Less talking and PR bullshit. Managing the company and the dev teams for, once again, quality. Something like early and mid 360 days.

As a Playstation biased person I should say I'm very satisfied with Phil Spencer's work but I'm not.

I'm worried he may succeed in the long run. Not because of brand loyalty but because I find the business model he is trying to impose abhorrent.

All said and done just vote with your wallet either way.

I have, no renewal which ended last week of Gold or Gamepass which I got with the Gears 5 steelbook edition. Had enough personally, as much as I am passionate about Xbox there is a limit to that and all that passion, feedback in the insiders program, hoping for better has been a waste of time.

He certainly talks the talk.

I do think he has done great things in regards to Game Pass, Backwards Compatibility and studio acquisitions.

However, we've not seen anything in regards to the Xbox brand having a must-own exclusive under their belt. Obviously, with new studios, projects take time and we're yet to see those projects bear fruit. I do hope that by pushing this power heavy narrative they will start to lean into it a bit more and can actually have a few projects that rival that of Sony's first party offerings. More competition can only push projects further.

Mark me as excited for the future.

Not only that, but PS3 still sold more than the X360.

Even Xbox at their strongest, couldn't beat PlayStation at their weakest.

We shouldn't really discuss them as rivals anymore, Xbox are simply not in the same league as PlayStation.

I'm not gonna pretend like all Phil had to do was snap his fingers and say "right, well, now I'm the boss so this is what we're gonna do".

It's not like he's Scrooge McDuck swimming in an ocean of money he can do with as he sees fit. A lot has changed under him, the whole direction of Xbox has changed. Or maybe you've forgotten where Xbox was at the start of this gen.

They sold much better compared to the PS4 early in the gen, if they had kept up the sales ratio of new consoles would be much closer. So in a sense they do worse and worse--I suspect this is in great part because they got into the business of making exclusive games for their platform too late in the gen (PC or not, just some reason to get their console over the competition's if console gaming is your thing).

Yeah I was going to say, they still were putting out and greenlighting games before Phil. The kinnect shit and the xbox one reveal was fucking awful but even Mattrick was greenlighting a steady stream of higher quality games.

Phil comes along and it all receded hard and we got less and less. And the quality is suffering on some titles.

Yep. They started out with goodwill, then lost a lot, fewer exclusives and had to start rebuilding. I'd imagine figuring out what the hell to do now after betting on Kinect didn't help either.

I'm no Spencer shill. Lionhead got shut down under him. But I this is a slow process and they've done a lot over the yews, and we're just about to see the outcome.

Fingers crossed.

Very satisfied.

After "Dapper Don", XBOX could have been dead. I think Phil has turned the shop around.

I wouldn't give him a perfect score.. I know people feel he needs to deliver more...and thats fair. I think he's delivered in hardware and services to near perfection (based off the One X, One S, SAD, console design, and future Series X and S, GAMEPASS, etc.). Obviously the games need to deliver and he's bought studios to do just that. So I think that story needs to still be written.

B+.

He doesn't seem too concerned about delivering the most important thing...games. And don't go on about how he's purchased all these studios. That was done waaay too late to have any bearing on XSX. The time is now. New-gen. New games. Shit hot looking titles on your 12TF machine, please. How many fucking years has he been there then turns around at the start of a new generation and says "You won't see an XBOX Series X exclusive title for 2 years". A truly awful statement to make which hands PS5 the podium before next-gen even begins. Old Jim Ryan can't believe his luck btw...New to the role, somewhat anxious and feeling a huge weight of responsibility on his shoulders, navigating his thoughts about how to take the brand forward....then reads that. He must have pissed himself with laughter.

"Exclusives are counter to what gaming is all about"?. Thanks Phil. Another pearl and one for the scrapbook. It's been like this forever. That's what makes Sony and Nintendo leaders in this space. Stop trying to change the narrative to suit your woeful strategy.

Hardware is great, software is terrible. Not sure if that's his problem. But whoever has been supervising 343i needs to get fired.

He cares about Age of Empires, so I am very satisfied. (Please show some gameplay of AoE4 or AoE3: DE...)

Phil is a likeable guy but too much of a pacifist for me. Both he and especially Greenberg seem to have a problem reading the room! Peter Moore and J. Allard (the book of Xenon)! Now those guys would put the fear of God into Sony. As it stands Phil & Greenberg will probably self sabotage themselves into third party existence!
