Polygon's Best Games of 2016

Decent list from them.

Surprised another big site hasn't gone with UC4 but it is refreshing to see. Again surprised at another no show for Forza but I feel driving games get a bit of the sports game treatment nowadays.

Nice seeing Firewatch and Stardew doing so well

Very weird that they previewed the game using a Rock Band plastic Guitar.

Firewatch will be looked back on as one of the most overrated games of 2016. The voice acting is nice but it's more walking simulator than game and the story is extremely disappointing when it should be its biggest strength.

Surprised TLG made their list, I think they gave it 7.5

Oh well - strong list, but it's actually hard to go wrong this year. 2016 was just all around pretty fucking great...

for games :(

Haha no, that would be Uncharted 4. Firewatch is fantastic and feels fresh and original. Uncharted is good but worn out and recycled. Uncharted GOTY picks 113, Firewatch 1 :I

What did they give UC4? oh a 9 more than everything else on that list aside from inside..huh

Solid list, aside from firewatch

just think TLG should be in a better position

Was expecting Virginia at #1 honestly. Their GotY 2015 was Her Story.

well her story was great and virginia sucked

does every list needs uncharted 4? you guys are a really annoying with this

Firewatch is really overrated. A game with heavy emphasis on story that has a terrible story.

It has great dialogues and that's it, i guess?

Awesome list, congrats to Doom! Great to see Inside getting so much love, and I was really surprised to see TLG scraping in at 10. All the articles for each game on the GOTY list have been fantastic reads. I really need to play Titanfall 2 already, I've got it sitting there - I'd wanted to get it done before GAF's GOTY list closed.

I really liked their article on Firewatch, I felt a similar way http://www.polygon.com/2017/1/5/14129570/firewatch-games-of-the-year-2016

Yeah, it was a wonderful article, definitely felt the same.

Publications not including a game in their top ten list does not mean they didn't like it, people. Stop trying to force an agenda on a subjective list - it makes you look petty.

Racing isn't really as big in the US as it used to be

That's an understatement. Outside of hardcore fans it is dead which is a damn shame because racing games this gen have been pretty good and FH3 is one of the best games this gen regardless of genre.

Wow, that's hilarious. I've completely disagreed with polygon reviews for years (well, I guess specifically Arthur Gies, but also others) and I don't even bother reading review scores there any longer due to how disconnected they are from my own preferences. I would have never, ever thought they'd be the only major outlet to choose my personal GOTY as #1. The fact that the following #2 is Inside, a title that I put firmly in my "I must be completely out of touch with the gaming world because I don't see anything special here" category is even better. What a weirdddddd list.

Edit: lol, yeah, not to mention that Polygon spawned the infamous "what do you mean move and aim?" video that I've watched dozens of times

What Firewatch is set to do, it does magnificently. The art style and music gives the game great atmosphere. Writing and dialogue bring the characters to life, they feel like actual real humans. The game takes the player for a ride of different emotions, if you let it. Personally I was really immersed and felt what Henry felt, especially the sense of paranoia was really strong. The story of Firewatch is about the characters and it's really intimate. It's not about what shady shit is going on in the forest, did you think it was? Do you need monsters, dragons, lasers, aliens, ghosts in every game? Does it always need to be a big scale epic adventure? To me no and that's refreshing. The ending was unexpected to me and I loved it.
Delilah wasn't my reward and it felt bad that I didn't get to atleast see her.

Also, what do you mean when you say something is overrated? That your taste in games is the truth? Differing opinions are just wrong? Can't you just say that you don't like it. Why discredit others opinions? Why say that too many people love this game I didn't enjoy.

Edit: I just noticed that you liked Her Story, so I guess you don't need monsters and lasers in every game.

Inside is special in that it tells a dialogue-less story of a dystopic world through mechanics really well and does incredible world building as little by little of the eccentricities are teased then capitalised on (such as the hairy swimming boys). It's a melancholic tale about the good and bad of hunanity told mainly through incredibly expressive animations. The variety helps a lot, as you're never doing the same thing for too long. Also has a brutal unforgettable ending.

Nice collection of games, last year was quite diverse in its top-notch offerings

Great collection but there is no way Firewatch is a better game than The Witness, Stardew Valley or Titanfall 2. But I was fully expecting that game to place highly with Polygon.
That's not how this works, in any way.

Firewatch will be looked back on as one of the most overrated games of 2016. The voice acting is nice but it's more walking simulator than game and the story is extremely disappointing when it should be its biggest strength.
What does that even mean? That's like saying something is more point-n-click than game or something.

What Firewatch did exceptionally was establish a sense of place, and then slowly, gradually, corrupt that sense of place, turning familiar jaunts and known trails into places where you just feel unsafe and tense and isolated. It was like being in the middle of an interactive thriller

I'll never understand the appeal of a grotesque game like Doom, but good on them. Seems to be a hit.

Again sad that Inside isn't topping off the chart, not sure if getting number 2 will land it as much coverage as Limbo had--Seemed like even that was a slow, steady seller for Playdead.

I still don't understand the love for Superhot. It's a really cool premise that completely falls apart after about 10 minutes. Got boring real quick, at least for me.

Have you tried it in VR? Amazing experience and definitely a good exercise routine to keep you fit. :)

Well, I own 50% of those games. All great picks but I haven't gotten "into" TitanFall 2 yet. Still waiting to become more interested in it. It's just not grabbing me for some reason.
