Poor Vita performance dragging down Sony's entire gaming unit

This is their own fault, shouldn't even feel sorry for them.

Everybody expected e3 to be a have a major focus on the vita instead we got wonderbook and an hour of gameplay from already announced games, disgraceful

CoD will sell the PSV, to a certain extent. The kind of gamers that pay a subscription to CoD Elite will likely pick up a portable version.
Nhillistic is most likely developing the game and they aren't known for good mp

Thats why Sony should use their smartphone and tablets to help out with their Vita, all this potential and the talk of One Sony philosophy and yet there is still a huge wall between their products.

Serious question and not trolling but do people even buy Sony phones anymore? I remember back in the day they made some nice devices but the most recent device I even remember the name of is the xperia which got it's name tarnished from lack of updates.

I wonder why Sony hasn't responded to these types of articles...

Are they just ignoring the Vita and hoping it'll just magically take off some day?

Vita needs games, a price drop, Mario, Monster Hunter, a bundle with a memory card, actual games that shift units and free $50 PSN card with every bundle.
So basically, Sony need to bundle their £200 console with £150 worth of free stuff? Man, you should work for them.

They aren't doing a very good job, but I don't think, "just give it away" is the answer.

Yeah. Whatever they are doing now, it's not working. No matter how many people say WELL IT HAS GAMES YOU ARE JUST NOT LOOKING, it won't boost sales. That's the reality. :/

One thing they really should do is sell bundle packages. I don't mean hardware bundles, I mean software. Bought the PS3 version of MLB the Show? Bam! Get the Vita version for $15 more!

I've seen multiple commercials on TV in the past week, all of them featured FIFA for Vita, which is apparently free if you get a Vita ?

You must be in Europe. I haven't seen a single TV spot in the states.

I was mostly talking on the PS3 since most of the ps3 are genreally sold more in Europe.
and YoY is quite less compared to 360. I think gamasutra had one data pic on it.

I would still expect a drop of 25% at the very least. Console market is saturated, nothing short of a new console or chopping the price in half would get these units shifted.

But we haven't even seen what COD vita will look like and I'm sure the kind of gamers that pay for elite would rather just play on 360.

I hate how everyone seemingly forgets the massive drought that comes after every recent console release.

It's happened with every new platform released at least since the PS3 and everyone cries "NO GAMES!" but it's just because the console has just been released and I'm pretty sure most devs want to wait to release around holiday season.

Don't panic GAF!

All they are doing now is console ports and a cod which is rumored to be developed by nhillistic will have garbage mp which is the main appeal of the game

...outside a lack of games...I think more so than the price of the unit, the price of the average game needs to drop. They idea that they can charge near console prices for games because in their eyes it delivers a console like experience is flawed. You are never going to have a console like experience hunched over a portable device no matter how good the game is. You need to price your software right.

But with handhelds it's a bit different since most western 3rd party devs don't touch them to begin with.

All we know so far is that COD Vita is made up of spec ops missions, we have no idea if it even has multiplayer or if the multiplayer is anything like the console versions e.g. same maps, same killstreaks, unlocks, guns, attachments, progression etc. It might not even make it out by this holiday as well considering the fact that all we have is a logo and a short Walmart blurb.

I really want a Vita for Uncharted: GA, but I really can't justify paying that much just for one game. They really need to get some more compelling software out the door to make the Vita more appealing to the mass market.

They need a price drop or they need to keep it the same price, but bundle it with a memory card and a game. It's that simple. Software isn't going to push it.

Forget western 3rd party devs sony's own devs like naughty dog and ssm won't touch it(rad made both the gow games for psp) and zipper which made the excellent unit 13 is now closed wtf?Even bluepoint is porting all stars to vita superbot won't even touch it

They sold 7.4m Xperias last quarter and expect to sell much more for the whole year. They should bring the Vita under their Smartphones and tablet division.

Being that it has it's own campaign I doubt the maps will be the same as console versions. I also doubt 8v8 MP. I'd guess 4v4.

Fantastic machine...but they don't even try to sell it, this is a shame, best handled I ever owned that is on the fringe of collapse due to very bad marketing and PR communication.

There are good games already, they could push it further with a few other "bang" announcement, but it seems that they did not want to secure any of that either.

Sony has really lost it's hand for new Hardware release (PS3 release was shit, PSP Go was  and now this).

Yeah ? They sold 7.4 million last quater .[Huge increase from previous year]

Mostly in Asia and Europe.

Good VFM phones imo.

It's still a very similar situation to what the 3DS was in.
It released with a decent launch line up (worse than the vita's if anything) then there weren't any big title releases until OOT:3D and then there was another several month gap untill MK7 and Mario bros 3D, then the 3DS was declared saved!

The Vita's time will come, just be a bit patient.

But Nintendo handhelds pretty much always do well right?

AFAIK 360 sales is 48% down this year or something equally as daft. Sony's probably seeing similar figures on the PS3. As I said, everyone's falling flat on their faces.

360 harwdare sales are way ahead of 2006-07-08 and ahead of 2009

Plus are very close to 2010 levels

2011 sales was a spike and was expected to go down from there

if they stopped production of PSPs would this help Vita?

Double-edged sword at this point. PSP is extremely profitable for Sony now, and is actually selling better than Vita in Japan right now. What to do? Stop your best-selling system now in hopes of propping up the Vita?

I have seen two big Sony keynotes. These guys just... try to do everything and give nothing the attention it needs. Sony is a mess right now.

Having said that, i love the Ps3 and the games i've played on it.
Lots of people don't even know there is a psVita though. There is zero hype around that product.

Vita will take off when it gets to 199 with 16GB memory, and if CoD, Assassin's Creed, LBP and the next FIFA and Madden are half decent, I'm pretty sure they'll help too.

They are in more trouble in Japan, where they'll have to fight a bit more to get some good exclusives on the platform.

This is also true for the 3DS however. It'll also going to come into play when they inevitably attempt to charge $70 for next-gen console games.

The same could be said for God of War, but it worked. Of course the game must be good enough.
Gow is a sp focused game, how exactly are you predicitng people will get both versions since 3g isn't good enough for portable fps mp?

Vita still hasnt had it first holiday season in western markets and i would be shocked if AC and CoD cant move some systems this fall. Sales are low but its a price handheld in a difficult environment, i doubt Sony expected much better sales.
Nice couldn't have said it better myself
I haven't seen 1... 1 commercial for the vita
I agree

Isn't sony the worst video game company of all times when it comes to marketing? They really need yo fix that.

yes it is. I tether 3g from my phone to my ps3 and play cod all the time. The fact that all PlayStation exclusives have dedicated servers should make it better.

I remember the commercial for the Vita launch.

It wasn't very good.

Anyways, I own a Vita myself and just have not been interested in picking it up and playing anything until Persona 4 Golden.

Sony is a company with huge potential, and my favorite company in the industry by far, but they are hampered down by ignorance. Seriously, what are they thinking? I love my vita as well, but from the stupid pricing of the memory cards to people not even knowing what the device is just a small part of their problem.

another good post

They shouldn't have developed Vita after how badly PSP performed in NA and Europe...all that R&D should have been saved for PS4

You've seen what PSP did in Japan? I think it would be foolish of Sony to not even try to penetrate the handheld market after the PSP turned a succes in Japan.

Not sure why Sony was surprised with this, especially with the ridiculously priced proprietary memory cards. Saying the system was actually $249 was a misnomer because of that memory.

That said, they can easily turn this around. Just give it some time.

Maybe if Sony made half an effort to let people know the vita even exists, they would sell more.

First post widely misses the mark.

I hope people don't believe the Vita's performing badly because of a lack of exposure? It's performing badly because the mass handheld market has moved on from the antiquated image of paying £200 for a dedicated portable gaming device that plays your console experiences, on the go. You could market that shit as vociferously as you want and the spike would be superficial; the mass market just aren't that bothered, especially with the 3DS also eating up some of that limited audience.

Just like how the kind of gamers who bought yearly releases of madden picked up madden psp, right?

Does anybody know why exactly Vita heaven 2 has yet to happen? Lack of game announcements? Last one was only considered worthwhile by gaf cause of pso2, and that was in such an early development stage it was actually a turnoff for me.

With Sony's e3 showing of vita (hint: there was none) these sales shouldn't be surprising

Love my vita but there are simply so few games
