Portal 2 PS3 Steam Features Revealed (Platform agnosticism)

Was totally worried my MacBook Pro wouldn't be able to run it properly. I'm totally buying the PS3 version and trying both.
Give Alien Swarm a try.

It's version of Source is closest to what Portal 2 will be running. If you're really worried I imagine it could give you a general idea of performance.

It's out of order because you're expecting functionality that Steamplay doesn't and hasn't offered... ever. From the beginning the philosophy of the system was not "multiple copies of the same game", it was "one copy of the game on whatever system you want". You can run your copy of TF2 on a PC and a Mac, but not simultaneously, you can't just log in to multiple machines at the same time and download and play.

When Portal 2 releases and you're limited to your one copy, I really hope you don't stroll into the Portal 2 OT and repeat these same sorts of complaints. Valve has made the limits of the Steamplay system well known for a very long time. Expect local coop and cross-platform coop with users on unique Steam accounts, but don't get your hopes up about doing cross-platform coop with only one copy of the game for yourself and your partner.
Alongside this it's worth noting that you've always been able to play multiple instances of a single player game simultaneously by starting steam in offline mode and then logging in elsewhere.
Anyone hoping to play coop with one copy, though, is pissing in the wind.

Crossplay huh... so... ps3 is getting KB/mouse support right?

PS3 already has KB/mouse support, but devs are not so keen to support it for some reason [last unreal tournament game on PS3 can be played with KB/m].

Where can I preorder this for PS3?? Is this available to ALL ps3 copies of the game from anywhere? (The steam unlock code) or do I need a special link to get this deal?

Amazon has a $20.00 credit deal on the PS3 version now so I wonder if that qualifies!

as for how everything will be done.. my guess is everything will be a code. enter in the code and tie it to your steam account and get the PC version.. code will probably also be needed for multi-player on PS3. So for those looking for a cheap PC version, chances are that you will have a severely neutered PS3 copy to sell.

And being steam is not at all about resale, my guess is that they WON'T offer an online code to buy for the used market. so my guess is all used copies of Portal 2 will be 100% offline only.

just my guess though.

edit - or maybe they will give an online play DLC, and obviously simply not include a PC version of the game with it.

Yes, order from Amazon.

I'm still cautious about getting the PS3 version. There's got to be a catch; the PC version must be bundled with something decent.

The PC version that comes with the PS3 copy has it's settings locked at 720p, 30 fps, and only supports a DS3 plugged into your PC. Oh man that would be funny.

On Kotaku in 3... 2... 1...

So are there any images or videos of the Steam interface on the PS3 yet? The game is releasing in less than 10 days. I'm going to be playing the PC version, but I'm just excited to see what happens with this. It is Valve, so my expectations are high (but I suppose I'm ignoring the state of Steam in 2004), and for whatever reason I'm excited to see if PS3 Steam community features best PSN. Hell if they can replicate PC Steam it could best Xbox Live.

Maybe I'm making too much of this, but I keep thinking this could be huge if done well.

I put my pre-order in on Amazon for the PS3 version with the full intention of only playing the PC version. I hope everything works out all right.

There is no "Steam interface". Steam itself isn't coming to the PS3 via Portal 2 - Steamworks is.

As for the bold, the game unlocks 1 week, 6 days and 7 hours. Not sure where you pulled 10 days from. Unless... you're from the future. :o

Watch Portal 2 will still sell better on the 360.

Bookmarked for posterity.

Just to clarify this is not me cheerleading for the 360. With all of the stuff the PS3 version is getting it definitely deserves better sales, but it wouldn't be the first time a better version of a game on PS3 was outsold by an inferior version on 360, as few of those as there are.

[*]Steam cloud save syncing. I don't know if this is PS3 - PC or just PS3 - PS3 but I assume both since it syncs to steam.

Can't remember where I read it, but they've stated that there's no save-game sharing between platforms. Something they couldn't get done in time.

Oh, don't worry, I figured as much. X360 games have a well-documented history of outselling their PS3 counter-parts, with the occasional exception to the rule (e.g. FFXIII). I'm simply going bump this thread and post a Nelson "Ha Ha!" picture if the game fairs better on the PS3, just for a bit of fun. :p (Chances are I'll forget, anyway.)

On a serious note, it'll be interesting to see the split between the two console platforms, considering the PS3 release of the Orange Box was underwhelming (late to shelves and had many technical issues), yet this time around Portal 2 is being done in-house, will release alongside the X360 version (and PC retail version) and has full Steamworks integration resulting in many benefits (cross-platform multiplayer, a Steam Play version of the game, etc.)

With the 2-pack it comes in at about the same price per copy (excluding any possible resale value of the PS3 disc).

You can't put a price on Trophies or being able to use the Dualshock 3.

BOOM statement invalidated.

Wasn't Portal packaged with the Orange Box? I don't remember a standalone.

Portal isn't exactly a shooter, so it might not be dominant on 360.

I'm hoping the PS3 version does so much better than the 360. Maybe it will push Microsoft into opening up Xbox Live to things like this.
Probably won't happen either way. :(

For the 360 it was, then it got an XBLA release. I'm not sure how well that did. I think it did pretty good though.

I'm pretty sure the sales numbers on Steam take massive shits all over GFWL store, but that hasn't really convinced MS to try to compete.

I doubt they will make any change here either, even if Portal 2 does 2x the numbers on PS3. There need to be more games to show it's a real trend.

Im a PS3 fan but the 360 version is going to outsell the PS3 version by alot.

And is there any word on how the graphics will be on PS3? That will be another factor.

EDIT- Someone quote this post for april NPD. =)

I've read this as well, however the latest article states that that is Steam Cloud syncing with savefiles. I'm going to safely(wrongly?) assume that if they can sync between Playstations, they can also sync it to PC steam.

Amazon is obviously a very crude way to judge things, but the PS3 version is #2 on the daily best seller chart (41 days in the top 100) versus #4 for the 360 (25 days in the top 100).

Pretty much any PC gamer who owns a PS3 is going to buy the PS3 version since it's actually cheaper than the stand alone PC version when you factor in the 20 gift card.

Heh, someone used the small checklist I made. It's weird seeing it on a different site in almost the same format :p

Anyway, no PC/PS3 save syncing, because of the achievements. But PS3/PS3 is in.

Steam Cloud for the PS3 version of Portal 2 was confirmed yonks ago. It was the saves working cross-platform that Valve weren't too sure about and then later said wouldn't be happening for the time being.

No, they've explicitly said that they didn't have time to work on cross-platform save compatibility. It is technically possible, but they didn't have time. Similar things have happened with Mac games on Steam.

Press Release Details from Valve on Steamworks for PS3:
Valve said:
April 13, 2011 – Valve, creator of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life, Portal, Left 4 Dead, and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today disclosed details regarding the Steam experience designed for the PlayStation®3, which is set to debut next week with the release of Portal 2.

The first title to support Steam on a console, Portal 2 offers cross-platform matchmaking, gameplay, friends, chat, and achievements, all powered by Steam. Steam on the PS3 also saves co-op game progress and single player saved games to the Steam Cloud, enabling players to pick up where they left off on any PlayStation®3.

The Steam overlay for PS3 provides access to both PSN and Steam friends, displaying their in-game or online status and providing a quick pathway to text chats, player profiles, friend requests, and game invites. Steam Achievements are earned in lockstep with PSN Trophies and are also accessible within the Steam overlay.

Steam on the PS3 provides access to all of these features once the player has linked their PlayStation® Network account with a Steam account, which is done right within the game. A Steam user can login to an existing account, and anyone new to Steam can create an account with the click of a button.

In the spirit of Steam Play, linked players of the PS3 version of Portal 2 can also access and play their copy of Portal 2 on any PC or Mac by redeeming an in-box access code on their computer. The Steam client verifies the linked customer and then lists Portal 2 among their library of Steam games for PC and Mac.

This sounds awesome. Hope this gets implemented across the board!

EDIT: Sorry if old.

Sorry to bring up this old thread, but other than the obvious that it's a bit naughty, is there any reason why I couldn't get the PS3 version, play it on my PC and let my friend borrow it on the PS3?! Even more of a long shot - could we play against each other online? I guess the answer is no but depends how they track things I guess, if you need a code etc...
