Post a game that felt rushed and incomplete

Another is God of War 3. You really can't top that intro, but at least try to remain a consistent level of quality. That level with the spider boss and the garden with Hera were terrible. Also how many times do you really need to keep flying up and down that same shaft and avoiding debris?

- Soul Reaver (several areas and upgrades without a clear purpose)
- Xenogears
- Xenosaga series (mainly Ep. 2 and 3)
- Siren 2

The most interesting thing to me about this thread is the number of games that had protracted development times that still felt rushed to the audience.

Mafia 2, Gran Turismo 5, Bioshock Infinite, Watch Dogs, Wind Waker, Rage, KoF 12, FF12, Alpha Protocol...all had seriously extended (5+ year) development times.

Just goes to show that having a limitless schedule doesn't always equal a fulfilling vision.

SNK Wiki said:
SNK Overseas Manager Yoshihito Koyama revealed that the game is going to be "3D mixed with 2D"; this led to speculation that the game could use cel-shading to give the game a 2D look, but it was later revealed at AOU 2008 that KOF XII will use newly-drawn 2D sprites on detailed 2D backgrounds. Producer Masaaki Kukino informed Kotaku that the game is one hundred percent hand drawn, there being zero cell shading in the game. He has also stated that the main goal of the game is to give a new "rebirth" to the series. They have no intention of changing the main series into 3D in the future. The staff decided to create the new graphics during 2005 and 2006, and commented that they spent triple the amount of time developing it than the previous game.

In an interview with Fighters Front Line, Kukino replies that each character took 16~17 months to complete with a team of 10 different designers. Additionally, the sprites were personally checked by Nona for quality. Due to the time demands of drawing such detailed frames of animation, as well as the decision not to incorporate older assets as previous games in the series have, there will be only 20 playable characters, the lowest number ever in a game from this series.

In the case of KOF 12 it was admitted by the development team that the amount of time to create the new character sprites was 16 months for each character and that would have pushed KOF 12 back another year or so to be a complete experience.

It's the reason why KOF 12 is a "dream match" title and KOF 13 is canon with a full cast, story mode, and online play intact... KOF 13 was clearly the package SNKP wanted to deliver with KOF 12 but they instead rushed KOF 12 out the door to not only have a "new" product that year but also as a clear cash grab from their fans looking to see their new sprites in action.

In that chapter specifically they clearly intended to have a bike level (a la Bayonetta), that they cut and just turned into a short scene of Raiden stealing a bike and then rolling up to the boss fight.
Good point, we have to realize that sometimes less content can improve a game.

Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness.

My... clumsy controls (the dpad was merely emulated on the analog sticks), missing animations, unfinished levels (that were still left in the game in its unfinished state), NO DUAL PISTOLS, plot holes galore (Lara experiences a revelation at the end when she discovers that a character-whom the player first hears about during THAT SCENE without any introduction prior-is the bad guy) and tons of glitches.

To top it all off, it ended on a cliff hanger.
There's no wonder why it led to the demise of CORE Design.

Tales of Xillia. One of the main reasons the sequel even exists.

SaGa Frontier. The game was supposed to have an 8th main quest and main character (instead of the 7 it was released with). One main quest lacked an ending and main another quest... lacked content, pretty much. Even almost 20 years later, I am still sad about that fact.

Mario Kart 7 and 8. Great games and well polished, but Nintendo ain't fooling me.

Came in here to specifically post Mario Kart 8. Plays fine, well polished, but lacking in common options from previous Mario Kart games. No on-screen track map, no option to set horizontal split-screen in 2-player, no Battle Mode-specific maps, less online stat tracking than Mario Kart Wii had. It just reeks of rushing, and overlooking a lot of stuff.

Rome 2 comes to mind.

Buggy siege AI, unrefined User Interface, no family tree, underdeveloped political system... it's two steps back from Shogun II.

Alpha Protocol

Solid concept brought down by broken gameplay and bugs. Still one of my favorite games from last gen

Actually, AP is the opposite. The wonky shooting is down to a Sega directive that it be based solely on stats and RNG. Obsidian wanted the player aiming to be more important.

And at the end, Sega stuck it on a shelve for six months, but didn't let Obsidian work on it during that period.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2. There are a lot of things I really enjoy about the game, but the scaling issues alone suggest there were problems during development that they didn't take the time to solve. The art district also really doesn't feel anywhere near as fleshed out as other areas in the game and I suspect that actual final assets were never made for some of the buildings/surfaces there. Finally, the plot leaves a lot of things unresolved, including the ending which I personally was ok with but most were not because it doesn't really deliver what was promised.

Do note though that the linked jpeg is a bit misleading, the top-right image isn't anywhere near as egregious on PS3 at least.

xenogears and in a minor way xenosaga.
when it didn't popped up the "to be continued" at the end of ep3 i cried a little inside. :(

Not complete enough:

Battlefield 4

So incomplete that it's actually enjoyable:

Sonic '06

So ABOMINABLY lacking in base game content that it's publisher should be banned from making games for a decade:

Dungeon Keeper

The "FInal Fantasy VII that was too dark to be a Final Fantasy VII", AKA Xenogears. Its my favorite game of all time, but that cut in resources to star working on VIII really hurt the game.

Advent Rising is the first game that comes to mind. I remember being excited about playing it, until realizing that it was a broken mess of a game.

Rome 2 comes to mind.

Buggy siege AI, unrefined User Interface, no family tree, underdeveloped political system... it's two steps back from Shogun II.

Oh hell, this is a great example, I had a very odd feeling about this game especially since it didn't have a demo and it also had a review embargo, unlike (I think) all the previous Total War games (Shogun 2 definitely had a demo and no embargo).

Killzone: Shadow Fall. Despite the pretty graphics, this game has no soul. One of the few games that I started and never intend to finish.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City

Felt the game wasn't polished enough and could have been a great game. Plus dat screen tearing in-game when I played it on PS3.

Grabbed it with a group of friends and we played together, as all of us are huge RE fans we feel betrayed (Long with the last RE games after 4 just not the same)

Reboot for this game is needed to re-imagine!

The Gamecube had so many rushed games. Super Smash Bros. Melee, Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, and Mario Sunshine all suffered so they could push them out to retail faster.

What did you find rushed about Melee? I felt the amount of content in that game was incredible (especially compared to Smash64), and it felt very 'complete'.

I know this has probably been posted hundreds of times now but this is seriously Sonic 2006: The Thread. That game was so disappointing because it had the potential to be great. It just needed another six months to a year of development to polish and finish off the game. But it's Sega. So they rushed the game out for Christmas when it clearly wasn't done yet and caused irreparable harm to the Sonic brand. It's the one game people mention when talking about Sonic's decline in quality when in a parallel universe Sega would have delayed it for a year and it would have turned out amazing. As a massive Sonic fan it still remains probably the greatest disappointment I have ever felt in gaming with Sonic Heroes probably a close second. It just looked so good initially with all those demos and videos they showed only to turn out rushed and unfinished.

Hopefully the rumoured Sonic reboot set for 2015 will prove to be a much better (and completely finished) game.

Wow no mention of Uncharted 3?

Plenty of people mentioned U3, dude.

Uncharted 3
Killzone 3
Gears of War 2

Uncharted 3

Incomplete would be a stretch but definitely felt rushed

-Talbot was mysterious but never really fleshed out or provided explanation on how certain things happened that realistically couldnt
-Endgame boss fight pretty much non existent
-Characters disappear from the first half of the game after playing a pivotal role only to never even be mentioned again (Chloe & cutter)
-Major Character only appear in the second half of the game (Elena)
-First half of the game is front loaded with puzzles and second half back loaded with shootouts. Not enough of a healthy mix of the two throughout the game
-Major setpieces and events that dont serve to actually move the plot forward

I agree 100%. Didn't they even say they knew they couldn't top the second game?

Uncharted 3. It was so rushed the aiming was literally broken, and it was missing a graphical effect that got added back almost a month later.

I wonder if anybody has mentioned Battlefield 4 yet.
I'll bet it's come up once or twice.

That game is fantastic now and you could see a lot of promise at launch, but yech was it messed up.

Playing Tales of Xillia 1 now and I think even the Executive Producer stated that the game was rushed and incomplete in a post-mordem interview. While it does have issues with recycled assets and lack of variety to the environments, there is a pretty full game here, but compared to past games it is very much lacking.

Agreed on so many other examples already stated.
