Post Your Gaming Setup: 2009 Edition

I've been waiting an age for my TV (Months and months to get sign off on the cash, and then weeks more waiting for stock to come in anywhere in the UK), but it finally arrived earlier in the week and I spent most of today getting it up and mounted, and basically re-cabling the entire living room.

Cables are hidden for the most part. I need to get a longer optical cable for the DVD (Or I might just finally get an upscaling DVD or region free BR player), and buy some large-ish conduit to cover the cables that trail behind the speakers (And I'll be replacing all three speakers you can see in the pic with something a little more discrete), but other than that the room is pretty much complete. Looking forward to replaying Uncharted and finally digging into Fury.

Lastly, I'm going to run an HDMI cable from the new PC (Which I should be sorting out in the next couple of months) so I can use the TV for that when I want to as well. ^_^

Happy days.

I hate, yet love that wall paper at the same time. Nice setup though.

Awesome monitor man.

A quick google shows these cost around $1500! Is this true? If so that is pretty damn impressive, that's about as much as I would spend for a whole PC setup or a 40" HDTV.

Yeah, well that monitor is more than twice the resolution of even a 1080p HDTV. Hardly comparable, really.

How are those speakers?

They're alright, nothing special though - just standard 2.1 :P That's one part of my setup that I haven't put much money into, as I mainly listen through my headphones (Sennhesier HD650).

Hot. Where did you get that desk?

Got it from Frys awhile back (~ 2 years ago) for around $80. Was a great deal, I really like it.

Yep, though I actually got it for much cheaper. Originally ordered a refurbished 3007WFP-HC for $850 and it came with a dead pixel, so I contacted Dell for a replacement and they ended up sending me a brand-new 3008WFP. Like brain_stew said, there is no comparison between this and HDTV. It has a resolution of 2560x1600, nearly double the pixels of 1080p. For me, it's definitely worth the money, one of the best purchases I've ever made. I work as a website designer and need all the screen restate I can get in Photoshop. Playing games at this res is absolutely breathtaking, but SLI or CrossFire is a must if you plan on maxing out titles like Crysis.

I can only imagine how awesome TF2 would look at that rez :O

These pics are slightly out of date but here's my projector now that it's set up and my screen is finished. I only have a few construction shots and none really of the finished article but here it is. Taking shots of films is a bit tricky as my camera either overexposes (making the blacks look much worse than they are) it or I would have to use a flash and that would ruin it. I will try again though. This was the only photo I was happy with as it's fairly reflective of what I see

Prior to building my frame - I had used this temporary paper to get used to the size and try a suitable, comfortable, compromise:

The projector is a Sanyo Z700 and, needless to say, I love it! Everything I throw at it looks stunning - for any TV - and that's before you take into account it's a 105" image from a 11ft throw from a £1000 projector that operates in absolute silence. If you want an idea of scale, those are DVDs on the shelf in the left corner :D

I wish all the people with shitty setups would post in this thread, so I wouldn't feel so crappy about the squalor that I must do my videogamin' in.

Maybe I will soon ;).

Don't count on it just yet, but you never know.

Here is a shitty set up for you guys.
It's in my dorm. All i got right now. It's and N64 with a surround sound. Nothing special.
New 360 coming in a couple weeks. :D
setup.jpg

My humble setup:

setup1.jpg

PC, x360 arcade, ps3 w/ 250gb hdd, controllers, evo monitor (Asus VH236H), mx518, Logitech X-530's and Audio Technica ATH M20's

setup2.jpg

Intel Q9650 @ 3.906Ghz (9x434, 1.224v) w/ Tuniq Tower + Silverstone FM121
Asus Maximus II Formula @ 1736 fsb (bios 1901)
4GB dual-channel Corsair Dominator pc8500 @ 1084Mhz & 5-5-5-15-2T 2.1v
EVGA GeForce GTX 285 @ 722/1476/1351 & 75% fan speed
PC Power & Cooling Turbo-Cool 1 Kilowatt psu
X-Fi Xtrememusic
dual Seagate Barracuda SATA2 250GB 7200rpm 16MB buffers
Dual Lite-On LH-20A1S's
CoolerMaster Stacker 830 Evolution
Windows XP Pro SP2 (32-bit)

Not bad for a college student...

I would highly recommend not stacking the PS3 on top of the 360. Put them both vertical and give the 360 some breathing room (plus give the PS3 a more sturdy surface).

That's a cool poster. Where did you get it? (the one on the left)

I started to do that but then got concerned about the x360 scratching discs while in the vertical position. They've both got plenty of room behind them (where the main fans are).

I don't know, man...I mean, do whatever you want but if it were me, I'd be far more concerned with blocking the top vents on the 360 than it scratching your discs. This is anecdotal of course but I worked in a 360 call center for a few months and received probably 3 total calls about the console scratching discs. Meanwhile, I probably received 60 calls a day relating to overheating-related issues.

The risk of scratching a disc in vertical position is almost none compared to what you're doing right now. I'd never put a console on top of a 360.

When I didn't have the space to lay my console down I never had a disc scratched whatsoever. The old risk is if your console is bumped or moved while it's on, and with the correct precautions it most likely won't happen.

Ask and ye shall receive.

My not-so-hot bedroom setup. My first HDTV from '05 hooked up to a modded Xbox (XBMC and a playlist with my 11 season Simpson DVD rips, fuck yeah)

Of course my actual home theater is much nicer.

PC has a 4Ghz Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM and an 8800GT. Comes with two 19" monitors. One is 1680x1050 and the other is 1280x1024.

TV is a 32" 720p LCD.

And yes, everything in that pic is plugged into that single outlet.

Ok, I'm convinced, today I'm switching them both to vertical. :D
Luckily I play the ps3 95% of the time so I doubt the x360 has suffered any damage lol.

Looking for a TV stand recommendations. Preferably from Ikea and needs to fit:
Onkyo Receiver
Ps3
Xbox 360
Center Channel Speaker
Some games

would really appreciate your experience with a stand you have. thanks!

I've had fun looking through this thread, so I figured I should contribute as well.

But first, sorry for the shitty picture quality, and I'm a college student, so this is just my bedroom... it's all I have to work with, and no, I can't do anything about the broke-ass wallpaper.

Anyway...

wide1.jpg

I got my iPhone chillin' on the bed and Full Metal Panic: TSR dominating the TV.

There's some odd absences here... games I totally should have like Metroid Prime and Ninja Gaiden... well, I sold the MP games in anticipation of the trilogy, and I need to get NG Black (replacing Sigma, oddly enough) and NG Sigma II. Also, BlazBlue isn't on the shelf because I'm still chillin' with my review copy. I should really get off my ass and support Aksys, I guess.

shelf2.jpg

Don't worry, there's more games... it's not all this Pokemon bullshit.

shelf3.jpg

I have some movies with people who aren't cartoons and who speak English. Thanks, WB, for the Shawshank Redemption case that sticks the fuck out and looks genuinely retarded. There's some stuff I don't have pictured, like my Da Ali G Show DVDs and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

shelf4.jpg

Here we go... this is the shit. I just got my Saturn last Fall, so I've been getting the games I missed out on for all these years. It's been... expensive. Also got a Genesis not that long ago for the first time. You can't really read the labels, but I've got Castlevania Bloodlines, Contra HC, Lightening Force, and Revenge of Shinobi. It's tough to read the SNES labels, too, but the games are Donkey Kong Country 1-3 (the first and last great games from Rare), LTTP, Super Castlevania IV, Super Mario RPG, and Super Metroid. The gold cart is Ocarina of Time, the lone N64 game that I think is still worth having. The Super Famicom cart is Rockman & Forte, because the GBA version looked pretty crappy and the music was more or less the Game Boy ripping ass in your face. You should check it out, it's cool. Oh, and despite having a Metal Slug cart, I have no Neo Geo hardware... yeah. But hey, for the time being, I'm legally entitled to play the fuck out of it. If SNK busts down my door I can give Ben Hermann the finger, because I don't have to play it on SNK's godawful compilations now.

oldschool.jpg

GBA and PC game boxes. It's nice that PC games are starting to get some uniformity in their cases. The copy of The Witcher I have is the European version, because that one is uncensored and has teh tits. And yeah, I'm aware they recently patched that into the US version as well. The game with the squiggly writing is Melty Blood: Act Cadenza Ver. B.

shelf5.jpg

Okay, that's enough shitty games and lame-ass anime. Let's move on to closer up pics of the hardware. Look at that goddamn skeleton Saturn.

tv.jpg

Closer pic of my computer. Dunno if you can tell, but that's Bionic Commando: Rearmed on there right now. I have it hooked up to my HT shit, but I use my headphones (Sennheiser HD650s) most of the time. Do excuse the mess of wires under the desk... I had to fanagle with some shit, and I didn't clean it up. Oh, and that mini-fridge looking thing is my subwoofer. Boom boom shake tha room, bitch.

One of the things that people usually like to see is imports. Hey, how convenient that that's what the following pictures are!

imports1.jpg

Yeah, I like Beatmania. Luckily, I'm not a fan of the ones that came out prior to 9th Style, which is nice because they're really tough to find and more expensive than I'd like. Also, I actually intend to get rid of Garou MOTW in favor of the Neo Geo version at some point... just forgot to take it off the shelf... and I was like "fuck it" coz I don't really care. What's not pictured is The Witcher and Rockman & Forte. Oops.

imports2.jpg

And lastly, my most recent big-ish purchase

newmonitor.jpg

Now, you might think I've lost my fuckin' mind buying a monitor from Asus of all places... but, the reason is because this monitor is incredibly good for timing sensitive games. Why, you can even play Beatmania (the timing sensitive-ist game ever!) on it! The image quality is much, much better than you'd expect, too. Now, why would I have a dedicated monitor for timing sensitive games and an MVS cart with no Neo Geo? Well, because my next project is going to be to get a Supergun set up, so I can get some arcade gaming up in this piece. Once I get ahold of that shit... yeah, now that's when I'll have lost my mind.

So yeah, there's not a whole lot left that I "need to get." A few things here and there, some of which will be unpleasantly expensive... and one of which will be a Turbo Duo... but I'm getting there.

Anyway, hopefully you enjoyed this. If not... well, eh, I don't really care.
