Are you sure about that? My receiver can decode TrueHD and DTS-HD MA but the PS3 does them both internally and always outputs PCM for me.grap3fruitman said:The PS3 can bitstream Master DTS but not Dolby True HD for some reason even though the PS3 is supposedly HDMI 1.3. HDMI 1.3 supports bitstreaming of both these codecs so I don't understand why Sony is allowed to call the version of HDMI on the PS3 1.3. It's really annoying and I'd like my receiver to do the decoding because I always have the issue of the PS3 adding static to Dolby True HD decoded tracks.

I agree about your HDMI 1.3 complaint, though. Bitstreaming HD audio codecs is really the only tangible benefit of 1.3 over previous versions that you'll see this generation, and the PS3 not supporting it makes it pretty much irrelevant. Apparently it's a limitation of the PS3's HDMI hardware, and I don't know how one that can't output bitstream can be certified HDMI 1.3. If a potential PS3 Slim updates the hardware to allow it that's one of the biggest features that'll get me to upgrade.

I can't tell from your pics, but are you sure the PS3 isn't just bitstreaming the core DTS track and not the DTS-HD track? A lossy, core DTS track is contained in the DTS-HD tracks, and the PS3 can bitstream vanilla DTS just fine. The PS3 cannot bitstream any of the lossless codecs.
I'm not sure actually. See, I thought that it couldn't bitstream either and stated this in another thread a while back and got yelled at. So I looked into it, took these pics and now I'm wrong again. Aaaah! Which is it?Valkyr Junkie said:I can't tell from your pics, but are you sure the PS3 isn't just bitstreaming the core DTS track and not the DTS-HD track? grap3fruitman said:So why's the PS3 supposedly got HDMI 1.3 if it can't bitstream any lossless codecs (except uncompressed, obviously)? Isn't this a case of false advertising?
I always get static from TrueHD tracks when I do that. No issue with Master DTS or Dolby Digital when I use LPCM, just TrueHD and it's not all the time but often enough to bother me.Valkyr Junkie said:Just set the HDMI audio settings on your PS3 to PCM and you'll always get the best sound possible in movies. For movies that have LPMC and Dolby TrueHD tracks you will need to pick the lossless sound track when the movie starts however.

The PS3 does the decoding, so it should show up as linear PCM or something on your receiver.

That's not bitstreaming then. Your receiver would say Dolby TrueHD, not LPCM, if it were bitstreaming. The whole point of bitstreaming is that the receiver does the decoding of the audio codec, not the PS3 or other player.

The PS3's HDMI is version 1.3 according to this and part of the HDMI 1.3 standard is bitstreaming True HD and Master DTS.pj325is said:Oh, I got the terms backwards.. I don't think ps3 ever claimed to be able to bitstream hd audio.
It should but I have issues with static on TrueHD tracks with the PS3 and I'm sure I'm not the only one.pj325is said:What does it matter which device does the decoding? It's lossless so shouldn't any device that decodes it come up with the same output?

When do you notice this static? I can't say I ever have. Just tested it with Kung Fu Panda which is truehd and I can't say I hear anything out of the ordinary. Also, what kind of receiver do you have? I managed to google something about static from the PS3 related to last year's yamaha receivers related to having 7.1 output selected. I have a denon 2808ci myself and only a 5.1 speaker setup.grap3fruitman said:The PS3's HDMI is version 1.3 according to this and part of the HDMI 1.3 standard is bitstreaming True HD and Master DTS.

At higher volumes is when you can usually hear it more, but it's not all the time and on all movies. And I have a Denon 2309CI with a 5.0 setup (I need a sub, but I don't want to spend the money because I also need a new car. Ffff)SonComet said:When do you notice this static? That means you are NOT bitstreaming the codecs, the PS3 is decoding them internally and outputting LPCM. If you don't have your PS3 set to LPCM when you're connected to an HDMI receiver then YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG.pj325is said:I'm 100% sure I've bitstreamed both HD audio codecs
