"Power Levels Are Stupid"

I started watching DBZ for the first time in anticipation of the fighting game and the power level stuff is quite dumb.

Also everyone is strong, stronger, or strongiesstrongstrongula.

Without the Taio-Ken the heroes would've lost like every arc...I'm pretty sure it saved them at least once against the four major baddies.

Heard there was a guy who could kill people by playing a flute.

Plague is great but it's sometimes hard to tell when he's joking or not which has an effect on how well you're able to enjoy his work. Even as a fan.

LMAO at Eli getting all these tons of new subscribers and viewers thinking he's a Dragon Ball channel when he mostly does softcore furry art and spur of the moment LPs of games he has strong opinions about.

I love him tho.

I'm currently working my way through Saint Seiya for the first time. I couldn't believe how quickly characters reached light speed . . . Pretty awesome series so far lol.

Seiya would body pre super Goku but no one ever brings him up. Maybe outside the US that fantasy match up is more common?

I've seen Saint Seiya pop up frequently in manga/anime power discussions in the past. I just never had any context for it till I started reading/watching the series a few months ago. Now I fully understand why people would say that Goku can't hang with the Gold Saints lol.

Saint Seiya does it better IMO, Mu says it very clear: "Forget about what Cloth your opponent is wearing, whoever elevates his/her cosmo higher will be the victorious one"

And that's pretty much how it goes, while a gold saint has higher "base" cosmo than a Bronze Saint, a Bronze saint can still win.

Also those discussing here should watch the video and come back, he points out the fundamental flaws of power levels in a very eloquent way.

There is a reason that on Saint Seiya forums people still debate who will win between specific Saints against others, it was never a clear cut based on numbers like on Dragon Ball

I guess on forums I had always seen this claim that DB characters are some of the most powerful in fiction, certainly anime, Goku always being matched with supes, etc.

That makes sense. The Saints have vastly different power-sets and combat strengths. It's not as clear cut as DB at all, where stronger guy beats weaker guy like 99% of the time.

I used to be one of those people lol. However the more discussions I read and participated in, the more I noted Saint Seiya would frequently pop up. This year I finally decided to put an end to my curiosity, and see how strong these characters were for myself. So far I am very impressed. Shit escalated VERY quickly.

Super is great partially because the show said "power levels are bullshit", because now we get cool shit like Roshi gaming people in the Tournament of Power and Android 17 styling on people.

It's weird that people get so caught up with power levels in Dragonball, specifically. The entire idea of "power levels" was introduced into the series specifically for the sole purpose of showing that it was completely bullshit. That's why every member of the Frieza force lost their fucking shit when suddenly Gohan or Vegeta stopped hiding their energy and shattered every scouter in the vicinity.

Pretty much how I feel. Super has many flaws, but that it tossed out things like that makes room for more dumb fun and I'm okay with that.

Seeing Roshi and Tenshinhan actually doing things again makes it more than worth it.

What are you talking about, Super has been completely shitting on Tien.

Yeah, that shows pretty bad too, in some ways worse than DB. There's the whole thing about the saints being able to perform superhuman feats like punching through mountains, but also somehow simultaneously having the durability of normal human bodies. I'm sure it sounded like a cool idea to the creator, but it's incredibly stupid and one of the things that never sat right with me since I started watching it.

Power levels are bullshit, and nothing makes sense, all the fights suck and are crazy boring, with just generic punches and a few laser beams.

Super is garbage compared to something like YYH, or even Naruto.

Hell, I would even take Bleach over it.

I still keep watching every week because it's fucking Dragon Ball, and no matter how much I hate it, I love it.

There are probably more Tien screentime in Super than Z by now.

The only memorable thing he did in Z is getting killed by Nappa, Tri-Beam against Cell, and saving Gohan from Buu. there are some episodes dedicated to him in Super

The DB writers has give up precise power levels since Frieza saga, other than some vague power differences. I have no idea why people are so hung up on that.

But all those moments made him look great, meanwhile...

Loved the power levels as a kid. I remember looking them up in the middle school computer lab. People have got to chillout

Power levels gone stupid because of Frieza and Super Saiyan transformation. In the first arc of DBZ Saiyan arc and early to mid Namek saga, power levels are still within 5 digits, so characters are all mostly comparable. Frieza came along and the numbers all went to shit.

"Power levels" to me were boring.

There were a few cool energy beams, but most of this "raising power level" stuff was boring to sit through. Watching characters stand still like unmovable mountains.

versus actual acrobatic fights...

God.The quality is so much worse in modern anime.

yeah, I wonder what people are smoking when they say Super looks good :/

Not just DB btw, One Piece for example looks horrible these days compared to the first 300 or so eps :(

Yeah it's insane how much better the older anime can look in terms of art style and things like animations.

I think many of you have seen this video and it still holds true in 2017. DB Super animators forgotten a lot of animation techniques that made DBZ fight scenes fun to watch (bad pacing aside).

The power levels and subverting your power thing in Z was done well. It was fine. It was sort of silly, and perhaps intentionally so, but this is a different issue than power creep. Like if Beerus can destroy a planet by what, tapping a table or whatever he does.. Basically a sneeze could destroy a planet.. Then why isn't Earth destroyed in a flash when he and Goku punch each other? I'm sure it gets really dumb later.

At least in Z, on through cell I think, to destroy the planet required a massive ball of energy you'd have to push through the earth. I think.. A little hazy. Buu jumped the shark further than it had ever been jumped up to that point. Super is fanfiction it's so bad from what I've seen.

It doesn't.

I like Plague even though I could tell early on the dude was milkshake duck material. I really appreciate his content but he seems like a grumpy asshole. He lives in the same sphere as a lot of internet animators.

Off topic but Super doing Tenshinhan like that fucking breaks me. I hated his episodes.

Screentime includes:
  • Getting beaten up by brainwashed Roshi
  • Getting beaten up by Gohan
  • Using Tri-Beam against a fodder character
  • Getting knocked out by a fodder character
