So I saw The Musical Box play The lamb Lies Down on Broadway in its entirety yesterday. One of the best concert experiences I've had. The Lamb is such a great album and these guys are masters at emulating the original Genesis performances.

Oh, and I just read that The Flower Kings will release a new album this year. Really looking forward to this.

They(Musical Box) come each year to Montreal and I always come close to going but I think I will this year...do they play Supper's Ready? that would be a huge flashback for me lol ;)...

Nah, they didn't unfortunately, but they did play The Musical Box and Watcher of the Skies. I would have preferred if they played Supper's Ready (being my favorite Genesis song and all), but no big deal. I came for The Lamb, the rest is just icing on the cake.

I did get to hear Supper's Ready last year when The Watch played Selling England in it's entirety (+ extra stuff obviously). They're not as fancy with the Genesis imitations in terms of costumes and stage effects, but they too nail it musically.

I'd love to see that band, I got into Genesis last year and they instantly became like my fav band
*fistbump*

Nice to hear. I'm looking forward to the 5.1 version mixed by our god Steven Wilson. Friday can't come soon enough :D

I was likely not going to get this, but now after listening to it, it's pretty good. I think I might actually like to hear what SW does with it in 5.1. There's so many other releases coming out this year I'm not sure if I'll have room to get that too.

Been a fan of 'Floyd for quite a while - was lucky to see them at Live8. RIP Richard Wright and Syd.. Love Gabriel era Genesis..

Also - been checking out Gentle Giant and Zappa alot recently. Some pretty interesting stuff out there. And it IS out there..

Prog is fun.

Losing them and Oceansize seriously bums me out beyond belief. Those were two of my absolute favorite up and coming bands and some of my top all time, really.

Yeah, it's awful to know Oceansize are gone, wish I had seen them live :( Do you know Amplifier? They are totally filling my desire for that sort of sound right now, can't believe it took me so long to buy The Octopus.

I really wish this thread would get legs like the metal thread has. I want to discuss these things with neogaf! I've been getting hard core into King Crimson lately. I went so far as to order the ProjeKcts Box Set and The Great Deceiver 1 & 2 the other day. I'm greatly anticipating the Larks' Tongues in Aspic and Beat remasters that we'll be getting this year. I'm also hoping Three of a Perfect Pair gets thrown in this year too.

Yeah I've heard of Amplifier. The Octopus was decent, and I see what you're saying. The guitar work is slightly reminiscent of Oceansize, but the overall feeling isn't really there for me. Oceansize had a bit more of a post rock and shoe gazer influence that I don't see in Amplifier, and also I love Mike Vennart's singing waaaaaay more than whoever the singer for Amplifier is. Still decent stuff, though.

I went through a major King Crimson phase back in college. I kept buying more Crimson albums and then I realized Fripp was kind of like the Gene Simmons of Prog rock. The dude packages, re-packages, introduces new box sets, special editions, etc. It's freakin' crazy. Fripp is extremely prolific but sometimes he goes a little too overboard with his "Crimson Club" fan service stuff. Around Thrak or Vroom is when I started to lose interest.

In a way you can't really blame him. Unfortunately, despite being just as good, King Crimson just never hit the same mainstream appeal that Pink Floyd did, so he never really got the money that would come along with that. The guy's gotta live somehow, and KC isn't really a household name, especially now. And aside from that I hear a lot of the sets and live stuff were brought about because he saw a demand for it. There were a ton of bootlegs out and about, so why not bring it out if it's something the fans want anyway.

Also, the new remasters aren't really his doing that much. I mean he obviously has the last say in it, but in an interview they asked him about the 5.1 editions and remasters and he responded that he wouldn't be that interested in it because they wouldn't return much money and not enough people are realistically that interested, but Steven Wilson and Jakko are doing the 5.1 mixes for essentially nothing, because they love KC and want to get that stuff out.

I was super into King Crimson about 3-4 years ago. I still think they're awesome but lately I have to be in the right mood to listen to them.

King Crimson are really dark, of course the right mood fits. : ) Robert Fripp's playing and ideas sound fuggin dangerous sometimes! This band will always be one of my main inspirations in style and attitude!

Finally picked up the Time Machine live album by Rush the other weekend and it got me thinking... ever since T4E, it's practically been: Studio Album / Live Album / Studio Album / Live Album / Live Album / Studio Album / Live Album / Live Album

(I didn't include Feedback)

Listening to Wind & Wuthering at the moment, probably going to put on Selling England By The Pound next, or maybe Foxtrot.

This thread being bumped made me put on Rush's first album again. So so so good.

Have you heard "Headlong Flight"?

I finally gave it a listen yesterday - the moment that bass groove kicked in I fell in love with the song. I cannot wait for Clockwork Angels to come out!

My man!

Storm Corrosion - Drag Ropes (Steven Wilson and Mikael Akerfeldt)

I rarely step into this thread because music aficionados on the internet take it to the extreme. Lots and lots of pretentious, unlistenable shit championed for obscurity. I figured this thread would be the same.

Maybe it is. Maybe not.

This however was amazing.

I LOVE rock music. And I continually find myself flirting with classical and jazz. But every time I try to dive into those genres head on, I'm left feeling like it isn't quite right or that my ear isn't ready.

This is exactly the sort of material that's likely going to bridge that gap.

Thanks for the video, purchase confirmed!

Storm Corrosion is pretty amazing, and not even close to as out there as I had thought it might be. Steven and Mike really played that up a bit much. I still think there's an internal core of pretty normal songs there. There's a really great atmosphere throughout, some really nice vocal lines, great guitar melodies, and everything is really just top notch. It's subtle in its dynamics, but once you're used to it it can really grow on you.

I still think my top of the year so far though is Anathema's Weather Systems. I'm really surprised at how much I love that thing.

Why the hell haven't I seen this thread before??

Had no idea there was a Thick As A Brick 2. Just downloaded it on Zune, listening now. Pretty good so far. Have Storm Corrosion downloaded and ready to go next.

Just a tip for some people out there. I discovered this album during the last few weeks:
07lamb.jpg

Soooooo good! Still with Peter Gabriel on vocals this could be my favourite album by the band.
Chuckoo Cocoon
The Lamia
Hairless Heart (so calming!)
In the Rapids - It
It's also one of the bands where I really love the vocals and singing melodies.

This is my favorite album of all-time. Every song is good and I love the creepy atmosphere. Genesis was the band that got me into Prog. I actually saw them live at MSG during their 2007 reunion tour.

Tool has probably become my favorite band now, since my favorite genres are metal and progressive rock, and no band does that better than Tool. At least from what I've heard so far.

I'm absolutely in love with Circa Survive's Fever Dreams; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBQ-LgJj9Vw

Anthony Green (the lead vocalist) is apparently a big deal but I have never heard of him before. I love his clean vocals.. his high pitched voice.

The only other time I've heard this is in Coheed and Cambria.

I wonder if anyone know any other bands with this type of front singer that sings in a almost "girliy voice"?

I'm sure you're familiar with Rush? :P That's the only other band I could think of lol

Maybe Sigur Ros?

I've been addicted to Porcupine Tree for a while now. My Progressive experience goes a little like this:

Genesis > ELP > Yes > LED Zeppelin (I consider The Presence to be progressive) > Rush > Dream Theater > Kamelot > At The Drive In > The Mars Volta > Porcupine Tree

I've always thought of progressive music as the technical exploration of what you can do with music. I like stuff thats layered and intricate. I also like pieces that have drastic changes in pace. Something that can be gentle and moving, and then unleash hell on you. Yeah, never really understood or even looked into what progressive means.

Listening to Cygnus X-1 (both Books!) at my desk and my coworkers must think I'm an insane person. Too much air bass, drum and guitar for one half-hour I guess.

Yeah, based on what you've said, you'd love King Crimson.

Go listen to Mike Oldfield if you want prog that's layered and intricate, and switches between moods all the time.

Ommadawn (2010 remaster). The finale of the piece is just as stirring now as it was 27 years ago.

Incantations (full live version with orchestra, almost 1 hour of music)

Amarok (the most dense piece of music Oldfield ever made. And it's absolutely glorious. As an easter egg it has a part in morse code beeps that spells out "Fuck you Richard Branson".)

This album is so good. I love how he made the album in such a way that no singles could be made out of it. Then again, Branson and Virging records kinda deserved it.

Another great album from Oldfield: Songs of Distant Earth. Inspired by the book by Artur C. Clarke with the same title. A very space-y and relaxing album.

Oh hey look, a prog thread!

I recently got turned onto Isis and I've been listening to them a lot. Of course I found out they disbanded which sucks, but I'm always looking for a new band to get into and I'm kinda picky.

I should post in this thread that I've been collecting prog rock vinyl for a while. I don't collect a lot of vinyl (actually, by now I suppose I do have a rather large collection...), but I do specifically go after prog rock ones. I'm not sure why, but it just feels right to listen to them in that format. I just picked up Emerson Lake and Palmer's Tarkus and one of their live triple vinyls for only 3 bucks a piece.

I have a bunch of prog vinyls on my wall, too. Above my couch I have In the Court of the Crimson King, Thick as a Brick, Close to the Edge, and Foxtrot. Over top of my cd racks I have Wish You Were Here. And over top of the TV I now have Storm Corrosion and Anathema's Weather Systems. I used to have two Porcupine Tree vinyls there, but I decided to change it up. I don't want too many of my classic prog ones hanging up everywhere.

As I said, my collection's getting pretty big, and I get most of 'em for like 3-4 bucks at used stores and flea markets. Most sound pretty good, too, and most are in good condition. For King Crimson I have Larks Tongues/Starless/Red, and ITCotCK. I have a few Pink Floyd albums, though I'm missing Dark Side of the Moon and a few other important ones. I have a few random Jethro Tull albums. I have a huge collection of Yes records. That's what started the obsession. With Genesis I've only found Foxtrot, Trick of the Tail, and Wind and Wuthering (and a few of their newer ones which I didn't pick up). Can't find Lamb Lies Down at all, unfortunately, since I really need to get into that one. I also kick myself for not buying the Gentle Giant records I saw at a store for like 3-4 bucks a while back before the obsession kicked in. They're not there anymore... they're replaced with brand new versions, and I'm just not into paying 20+ bucks for it.

What's better -

Red or In the Court of the Crimson King?

In the Court.

Red is probably my 2nd favorite of theirs. Then, possibly Islands and then Lizard.

I've listened to this album a contless amount of times and this is the first time I've heard of this Easter Egg. My mind is totally blown!
