In the "Should I start listening to Rush thread?" someone mentioned Camel and I've never actually listened to them but I went to YouTube and did some sampling of some of their songs and it was pretty decent... recommended albums/songs?

I still think my top of the year so far though is Anathema's Weather Systems. I'm really surprised at how much I love that thing.

I like it alot as well but I think We're Here Because We're Here is still better.

As far as favorite King Crimson Albums:

1. Red (Starless is amaaaaazing)
2. In the Court of the Crimson King
2. Larks' Tongues in Aspic

I hope any prog rock fans out there haven't missed Flying Colors, the supergroup composed of Mike Portnoy (drums, vocals), Dave LaRue (bass), Neal Morse (keyboards, vocals), Casey McPherson (lead vocals), and Steve Morse (guitar). Pretty damn great stuff!

Some great songs from their album:

Kayla
The Storm

Yeah, this is actually a really excellent album. I would recommend it as well. The group meshes together very nicely. Also, Steve Morse is one of my favorite guitarists and he really shines on this album with some beautiful soloing. It's nice to hear him in some non-instrumental music that isn't his Deep Purple gig.

Liking this a lot.

This album is the best Rush album since the hiatus. I believe
Caravan and BU2B have been re-engineered since they were first released

Getting my hopes up man!

I've head nothing but amazing things about the album so far. I'm picking it up after work tonight, pretty excited.

It took me a few listens to fully "digest" Clockwork Angels, but now I can say it's one of the best Rush albums to come in a while. There's a maturity to the playing and songwriting/lyrics that make it special. I cant wait to dig into the liner notes.

I am absolutely loving Clockwork Angels. I'll have to give it a few more listens before I give it a final judgement/ranking :)

I just picked this up as a father's day gift to myself today. I'm on my third listen in a row right now. I'm really enjoying this right now. Thanks so much for the recomendation.

Been mentioned a while back, but I'm really digging Between The Buried and Me at the moment. Always been a fan, but their latest EP is really really fucking good.

Like all good Prog stuff it takes a while to appreciate what's really going on, but once it clicks.. it fucking clicks. And yeah it is Prog Metal, but the composition is just so beautiful, especially in this track.

It's not only the best Rush record since the hiatus, it could very well be the best Rush record since Presto. Definitely in my top 10 Rush records of all time.....

Farewell to Kings
Hemispheres
2112
Moving Pictures
Caress of Steel
Fly By Night
Clockwork Angels
Permanent Waves
Power Windows
Presto

I absolutely love BtBaM. I got into them in 2009, I think it was. They were touring with Dream Theater (and I think Opeth) and I was planning to go to the concert so I checked out Colors. At first I didn't like it and refused to listen to it. But then I gave it another listen a couple months after and was completely blown away and now they're one of my favorite bands.

I'm really looking forward to their next full length album.

(I don't see an issue with talking about Progressive Metal in here either, unless we're all over the age of 50 most of us probably enjoy both sides of Prog music)

See I'm not sure, I think all of their albums since the hiatus have been absolutely stellar. I love Snakes and Arrows more than Vapor Trails but I still do really love Vapor Trails.

So I've listened to Clockwork Angels a few times now. At first I was tempted to say it was their best album since Presto but I think I actually like it better than Presto so it's their best album since Signals as far as I'm concerned.

The playing is phenomenal.

Fish (ex of Marillion) still makes some good stuff. From the album 13 Star.
Square Go
Dark Star
Manchmal
However, I would'nt say it was pure Prog Rock. But still sounds good.

Recently got A Life in a Day by Squackett (Steve Hackett ex-Genesis and Chris Squire ex-Yes). Some good tracks but, again, not as "Prog" as you'd think it would be. Still listen to a lot of Hackett's music.

Can't beat Floyd though.

I think you're the only Rush fan to think that Presto is their best album (or considered one of their best).

I don't know that that's true but regardless do I think it was better than any of their 80s output, moving away from the synth heavy sound and going back to a guitar/bass/drums driven sound. Most of their output since then has failed to resonate with me for whatever reason. Not necessarily bad but just never grabbed me, none of the songs stuck in my head, although I would listen to some of them from time to time.

Clockwork Angels on the other hand is the kind of album that I want to play again when the last song has finished.

Holy shit, I won 2 tickets to Roger Waters' The Wall at Yankee Stadium, from the local classic rock station -- first try calling in!

I have to admit, it's probably my least favorite album of Floyd's big four (guess which one is my favorite, duh), but as a whole, it's a great piece of work, and I've never seen it in concert format. I'm really excited. I've never won anything like this before.

I just saw this up in Albany, NY last Thursday. Fantastic show. The music is amazing and the stage setup, etc. is second to none. You're really in for a treat.

The Wall is my personal favorite PF album though so I'm not sure if I'm looking through rose tinted glasses.

The Wall>Animals>Obscured by Clouds>DSOTM>WYWH

Loving Clockwork Angels. It's such a solid album start to finish and I really, really wish they'd succumb to playing the whole thing in order in concert (though Alex indicated they'd likely not do that in 2012 but who knows what may happen during a rumored 2013 leg). I too initially put it at the best since Presto (which I love), but I'll have to say it is the best since probably Moving Pictures.

I'm normally all over Geddy's work but I have to say Alex is *incredible* on this album. Especially "Clockwork Angels" and "Carnies." Wow.

I discovered these guys from Japan called te' in another thread and figured I'd share it here in case it hasn't been already:

Loving this song.

edit: oops, I guess these guys would fall under "post rock." Wrong thread!

Yeah, love Genesis from _Trespass_ through _Selling England_. Not a huge fan of _Lamb_, though.

It's funny, I'm the same. Love all the old Genesis albums, even the ones post Gabriel, but I've never been able to get into Lamb much.

The Lamb is one of my favorites. I have a vinyl copy autographed by Peter Gabriel hanging over my computer monitor. There are a lot of great songs on it.
Broadway Melody of 1974
In The Cage
Back in NYC
Carpet Crawlers
Chamber of 32 Doors
Lilywhite Lilith
Anyway
The Lamia

Pretty much every song on that one is great! My personal favourites are The Lamia, Hairless Heart, Carpet Crawlers, The Light Dies Down On Broadway, In The Rapids/It. So much mindbending stuff. For me Peter Gabriel has never topped his singing on this album.

I got this box set of King Crimson live CDs at a used bookstore in Japan, they were produced in 90s...literally I can't find these recordings ANYWHERE on Youtube, it is a thing to be said for over-relying upon the Internet as the be all end all of music, it's really not.

For one thing, these CDs sound completely different than anything on YouTube even from the same years (early 70s). The sound is more dynamic, the mix is perfect, the way the ride bell sounds is just so incredible...it basically sounds like a completely different band. I had a similar experience with Tower of Power CDs.

Summary: CDs are still worth keeping an eye out for. Friends don't let friends listen to music on YouTube (okay I admit to do it a lot)

Do you have a picture of those CDs or a name? I'm interested in researching that stuff. We have a little jazz/prog festival right around the corner (15 minutes with car) every year: the Zappanale. Basically a festival full of crazy shit, it's awesome. They have multiple booths where they sell LPs and CDs of everything you can imagine in prog, jazz fusion or all the bastard-genres.

Grace Under Pressure not even listed?

That album gets no love, def my favorite rush record

Is that set The Great Deceiver? I treasure my copy of that.

Went back and listened to Vapor Trails by Rush the other night. I still really like that album despite it being a later Rush album that isn't often talked about anymore.

not nearly as bad as their 2nd most recent album though, that one was a stinker

although, the album live was fantastic, I haven't given their new album a listen to yet, I think me and my GF's dad may smoke a little and give it a sit down one of these days
