I love both his Genesis work and his solo pop work, so it's great to hear that he's coming back.

Could also help with a possible Genesis reunion, it wouldn't be quite the same, but I'm sure Chester could handle it. Could even give Mr Bruford a call ;)

Anyone been following the new Dream Theater album stuff? Kinda weird, cheesey.

Very cheesy. But that's Dream Theater for you.

They also seem to be borrowing heavily from 2112's concept.

I have the feeling the album is either gonna be their best in a really long time, or suck major balls. No middle ground.

Yeah, I am feeling the same towards it.

I feel the same about DT's new albuim. COuld be good... could be horrible

But we shall see.

I should be seeing riverside in the Berlin this weekend. Quite psyched!

New DT sounds cheesy as fuck, even compared to other Dream Theater records.

ADTOE was awesome, but their last one didn't do much for me. I guess we'll see how this is.

Fingers crossed for the new DT album. The last two albums are about on the same level as far as I'm concerned, hope this is at least that good.

ADOTE didn't do much for me, but the S/T I liked a LOT.

I liked ST'd quite a bit and disliked the previous one lol

I really liked the self titled in that at least they tried to spice things up a bit, while ADToE was mostly a rehashed Images and Words.

Breaking All Illusions is the best song they wrote in a decade though.

Self Titled was about as far from "spiced up" as I could possibly think of for the band. It felt bland as fuck. ADTOE to me felt energized and like they really had something to prove, and they proved it there.

I'm really surprised to see this opinion here. You guys are about the first people I've met that had a better opinion of S/T than ADTOE.

For the record, I really liked ADToE, self-references and all, save for a few stinkers (Lost Not Forgotten, ugh).

And yes, I believe self titled was "changing it up" for them in a way. Once you've done pretty much every kind of metal and progressive there is, "bland dad rock" is a big change :P I guess I'm just not as negative on it as everyone else. I really like a few tracks (Enemy Inside, Behind The Veil, Along For The Ride, Illumination Theory), I don't think it's a bad record at all.

I don't know if any of you are familiar with these guys or if you'd even call them progressive rock (probably teetering on the edge of metal), but Good Tiger are streaming their debut album in full. Former Tesseract frontman Elliot Coleman is on vocals, former Safety Fire guitarists are on guitars and the former The Faceless / Conquering Dystopia drummer is on drums. If you're into any of this new wave of prog rock / metal bands I'd at least give the first track a listen.

Thanks I'll check it out! I had no idea that The Safety Fire was finished. Also good to see Eliot Coleman back again - I actually prefer him over Daniel Tompkins. Tompkins has been sounding very same-y in all his songs lately.

Love what DT is going for with their new album!
A whole website dedicated to characters, world maps, sending out emails asking you to choose a side? Amazing! Looooooooveee it!
Now I only hope they deliver on the musical side.

I quite liked the last Tesseract album but I would agree that Dan played it a little safer than he did in Skyharbor. TSF called it quits earlier this year (makes me happy I got to see em live), I know they'd been together for a long time and after their bassist quit they probably didn't feel right playing together without him. Their style of guitarplaying is still very much present in this band though.

I liked ADTOE but the production felt lifeless. And I thought the vocal performance of Labrie was a bit bland. But the actual songs were mostly pretty good, especially Breaking All Illusions, which is righfully a modern fan favorite and one of their best. DVD was a bit subpar, but the show I attended back then was good.

DT12 was great I think, it had more groove, a lively vocal performance and each member got some standout moments. The live DVD of that tour is great as well, and the shows had really great production values. Illumination Theory studio version felt a bit too weirdly strucutred for my taste, but it was fantastic seeing it live: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2Vu60HLeLE (I think I already posted this here once, but what the hell).

This new one is going to be really interesting. Since I am a fan of concept albums, power/symphonic metal and love theater shows (the live shows of this album), the direction they seem to go into got me hyped! Also love that the graphics remind me of classic 90s PC gaming in a good way. It all seems really cheesy, but I think that is part of the fun factor here (and really, quite a lot of rock operas and concept albums are insanely over the top storywise).

Yes, loving it as well!

Next weekend will be godly.Travelling to Netherlands for 2 shows.
Thursday: Spock's Beard in Zoetemeer
Friday: The Theater Equation in Rotterdam

I saw the sunday show of Theater Equation (which they recorded for the DVD!), best show I ever saw without a doubt!

Aren't DT fans one of the worst fanbases out there?

No matter what they pull with this new album, there'll be a lot of people complaining.

Dream Theater are kind of run of the mill for me. Always solid but they don't really stand out enough among the plethora of prog metal that exists today.

Whenever they release an album lately it seems Haken comes out with one within the same time frame which is way more interesting to listen to.

And there'll be a lot of people calling them music gods who can do no wrong.

I've been a fan for the past 12 years and I hate the fanbase.

I could never get into Haken, for some reason. It's like, whenever I listen to the I feel like I'm crossing off things off a prog metal checklist.

A few months ago I was recommended the latest Ozric Tentacles album, 'Technicians of the Sacred', by someone in this thread. I was impressed to say the least, what a great melding of these two genres.

That then led me to check out their previous work and I quickly found that I loved almost everything they have ever put out.

I then looked on Prog Archives and a few other sites for other bands of this style and soon discovered the genre that is Space Rock.

Thanks to a Google Music subscription, I have added a bunch of albums to my phone and computer and have been listening to them near constantly for months now.

Some of my favourites

Ozric Tentacles
Quantum Fantay
Hidria Spacefolk
Mantric Muse
Øresund Space Collective
First Band From Outer Space

Any other recommendations are welcome

Technicians of the Sacred is easily one of my top 3 albums of the year. It's a true sonic masterpiece.

Although not exactly prog or jam band, Eat Static is worth checking out. They're two former members of Ozric Tentacles that went the full electronica route. In some ways, Technicians approaches the Eat Static sound. They're obsessed with UFOs and Ancient Aliens type themes.

STS9 might also be up your alley. They're another jam band that combines live and electronic elements:

Mew definitely border on proggy at times, although I doubt its a label they'd apply to themselves. They certainly have the technical chops to be prog.

Best evidence: New Terrain/Nervous - One track, 2 songs depending on whether its played forwards or backwards. Amazing, as both are beautiful, particular Nervous.

You're preaching to the choir, I have their double CD in my car!

Very nice, will definitely look in to them. It doesn't have to be rock + electronic though, most of the bands on my list above stay well within the rock area.

Pink Floyd, Rush, and Yes. The trifecta.

Huge Floyd and Yes fan, but I never really got in to Rush. The vocals put me off.

There's certainly a good bit of Gong/Steve Hillage worship with their early stuff.

What I mean is that they aren't as suspectible to fleeting contemporary trends throughout the decades, which seems somewhat rare. They'll modernize their gear and productions, but their sound remains constant over the ages. I can't really date their albums in the "Yeah, this sounds like it came out in the late 80's/mid 90's/00's" fashion like I usually can.
