Loved this album, and it's nice hearing any Riverside in 5.1. Will probably pick it up. I'm also excited for the other ambient album they're talking about putting out this year.

Picked this up today, but probably no real chance to listen to the 5.1 mix until the weekend.

Also I now have 2 CD copies of this album, as the LP came with a free CD.

Blu-ray? I'm hoping it'll be in 4K and Dolby Atmos (it won't...probably).

Blu-ray is being edited already!

4K would be awesome.

Having issues trying to find an album by a band I came across in the last few weeks.

The band is 3rd Ear Experience and they are a space rock band that really hit the mark with me.

Unfortunately, their second album Boi doesn't seem to be available to purchase or stream in Australia.

I've checked Groove Music, iTunes, Google Music and even a few smaller sites and they either don't have the album at all, or they have it listed, but upon switching to the Aussie storefront, it disappears. I'm assuming it's some licensing issue, but the point is I can't get it.

Country based licensing is so annoying in the Internet Age.

One of my favorite prog bands Umphrey's McGee is releasing an album in November with their Halloween show tunes. The concept is a whole set of covers mashed together, where the verse of one song is sang over the music of a different song.

This is a mashup of Radiohead's The National Anthem, Beck's Loser, and Phil Collins' In the Air Tonight.

Saw King Crimson couple months ago. As my favourite Prog band
Sorry Geddy
they completely blew me away. all three drummers were in the FRONT of the stage, that alone blew me away. everything was spot on, Fripp and Tony were supa cool

edit: Seriously see them during this lineup because its damn fine.

edit: to the guy below, their current singer is fucking insane in how good he sounds. It is greg lake circa 1968

Speaking of KC, I just got my copy of that "Radical Action" live set they just put out. Three CDs and a Blu-Ray of this lineup live. Haven't touched the blu ray but the CDs are really well done. Great versions of a lot of awesome songs.

So yay, new Blackfield album "V" is on the way with an even collaboration between Steven Wilson and Aviv Geffen. The bad news is the release date was just pushed back from November to January 20th 2017. Looking forward to the album, though.

Watcher of the Skies is pretty great, although I don't think some of it has aged very well.

Time Table is fine.

Get 'Em Out By Friday is a great song, but I think there are a few moments where the music and lyrics are very dense. Watching making of DVD for the album shows that the rest of the band would often finish a track, with Gabriel then coming in and laying lyrics on top afterwards. Sections that the band made with intricate instrumental patterns and melodies would suddenly have a bunch of lyrics put over the top and it all becomes too busy.

Can-Utility and the Coastliners is an awesome track, love the second half!

Horizons is such a lovely little piece and a great intro to the next track.

Supper's Ready is probably the greatest prog song ever made, such great variation while still maintaining a feeling of similarity. And Apocalypse in 9/8 just goes to a whole nother level!

I've been listening to a lot of live renditions of Supper's Ready recently, especially the 86 live medley version and Phil's drumming is just superb.

Selling England has this weird thing with me where I think about the album and how great it is, but if I actually look at the track list I realise I only like about half the tracks.

I think Foxtrot is a better album than Selling England so far.

I like foxtrot more but I think selling england by the pound is the better album

watcher, horizons, and supper's ready are amazing though I just feel like through and through selling england by the pound flows like few other albums do. pretty much ten times out of ten if I'm listening to selling england I'm listening to the whole album whereas with foxtrot I can listen to songs out of context just fine without feeling the pull to give the whole album a spin

Selling England is so good, except I find that Epping Forest just kills all the momentum built up on the first side. I dread flipping the LP over, but usually do because I know that I'll be rewarded eventually by Cinema Show, which is amazing.

Foxtrot is less polished than Selling England, though the highs are higher, particularly Supper's Ready. In actuality, I'm almost always in the mood for any of those 5 Gabriel albums, they're all pretty superb.

For whatever reason, I hadn't listened to Gazpacho until this week and now I can't fucking stop. Although I get why people compare the singer to Thom Yorke or even the Muse dude, I think his vocals are different enough that it doesn't bother me. It definitely reminds me of Yorke in The Bends, which is pretty cool to me (and he's a much singer better than the Muse dude). But the band itself holy shit, the band is fucking awesome and the music has a very hypnotic quality to it.

Night is an unabashed masterpiece. I'm very impressed, great great band.

Their recent work has kind of let me down a bit, but Night, Tick Tock, and Missa Atropos, and March of Ghosts are all magnificent.

I keep seeing their name pop up now and again but I've never really checked them out. That track sounds great, I'll give them a go tonight.

I kind of liked Demon, but still haven't heard the newer album. I didn't like very much their earlier than Night stuff, it's not bad but it's not very remarkable at all. Their run from Night to March of Ghosts was indeed insane, I loved every one of these albums. Can't believe it took me this long to get to know them.

You won't be disappointed I think. While the track I posted is my absolute favorite, their other stuff is very high quality as well.

Favourites for me are...
Gojira
Haken
Karnivool
Tesseract
The Contortionist
Tool
Midnight Odyssey
Ne Obliviscaris
Plini
And muse/pink floyd of course

Anyone got any recommendations based on this?

I like this thread.

I like this thread.

An easy recommendation for that list is some Devin Townsend stuff, especially Strapping Young Lad. SYL's City and Alien are masterpieces for the genre. You might also like maudlin of the Well, Bath is one of the best albums I've ever heard. Crippled Black Phoenix is awesome as well. The first album by OSI is great as well.

Not prog metal at all, but you might want to check some Alamaailman Vasarat, A Triggering Myth, Birds and Buildings and Änglagård. None of these bands are heavy, but they feature a mix of great interplay between the musicians and general weirdness in a way that kind of reminds me of the bands you listed.

More progressive metal than rock init?

I've listened to about three albums now. They are pretty good, I think I must have heard some of the songs before as they felt vaguely familiar.

Played Caravan's In The Land of Grey and Pink yesterday. I adore this record, it's absolutely fantastic. Slowly building my acid folk collection too - plan on getting some Pentangle albums and Mice and Rats in the Loft.

Who is nerdier

Rush or Yes

Uh, tough call...but in this case "nerdy" means something good, right?
Yes somehow flew below my radar all those years until a few moths ago. Now they're in my Top 5 bands of all time.
They took the best things from the Beatles and Beach Boys and added an insane amount of craftsmanship without the pretentiousness (at least on their Top 3 albums).

Edit: No one has mentioned Magma so far!? If you don't know about them, go listen to Attahk asap!!!
They really give meaning to the phrase "ahead of their time".

New Pain of Salvation song. Holy shit, guys, itsbeen84years.gif

It sounds... great? At least IMHO. I'm liking it better than most of the stuff from Road Salt (1 or 2). I'm glad Daniel is finally back in action after almost losing his life in the process.

Here's the video for "Meaningless". If it's blocked in your country (as in my case), you can use a VPN.

Finally gave Haken a chance. The Mountain is dang gud.

Yeah man, they are incredible! Check out Affinity, I would say it's just as good as The Mountain

Haken is awesome. I love that they don't take themselves too seriously and add random stuff to their songs. "1984" from their latest album is incredible.

On the previous topic of "Selling England" vs "Foxtrot" I'd also side with Foxtrot, even if for Supper's Ready only. That track is just too good.

Also, I recommend the band Big Big Train to Genesis fans. It's similar to the Foxtrot era of Genesis and the vocalist even plays the flute.
