New Pain of Salvation song. Holy shit, guys, itsbeen84years.gif

It sounds... great? At least IMHO. I'm liking it better than most of the stuff from Road Salt (1 or 2). I'm glad Daniel is finally back in action after almost losing his life in the process.

Here's the video for "Meaningless". If it's blocked in your country (as in my case), you can use a VPN.

Most interesting thing about that song is that it's literally a song from Ragnar's old band

holy crap, I didn't know that hahahaha

It's literally the exact same song with different lyrics. Damn. And it sounds so Pain of Salvation-ish anyway, who would've thought.

Yeah, it's crazy. That EP did come out after he started playing with Pain of Salvation, too.

Huh, interesting. Wonder if Daniel took a liking to the song immediately or Ragnar thought it'd be a good idea to remake/cover it...

Anyway, I like how Ragnar complements Daniel's voice in the new version. Dude has a great voice.

New Øresund Space Collective album out in 2 weeks, Visions of...

One of the tracks is up for preview and it's an awesome funky jam.

I feel like every modern prog rock band has vocalists that sound like they're at least 40 years old. I guess the community just skews toward older folks.

Jokes aside, what are some good prog rock bands that have a medieval or folky atmosphere? I really like Gryphon, Mellow Candle, and Comus

Meller Golyzniak Duda (a collaboration effort from Maciek Meller, Maciek Gołyźniak and Mariusz Duda, as you can tell from the name) released their first album last Friday and it's pretty good.

Ougenweide? Older stuff from Hölderlin? German prog-bands have some fondness to medieval-esque music. Hölderlins Traum has some good stuff in there and the last track is pure bliss.
And British Progressive Folk. Fairport Convention has some masterpieces, both albums from Trees are also masterpieces.

You can also look for Neo-Medieval Folk or Progressive Folk on RYM.

These two bands are firmly in the progressive folk vein:

Kolinda (from Hungary)

Flairck (Netherlands)

Justin Chancellor from Tool did a really insightful interview last week that goes over exactly how Tool approaches the writing process, including how they're approaching the new album as well:

The Pineapple Thief - Your Wilderness
Nosound - Scintilla
The Dear Hunter - Act V

Up late listening to Novalis - Konzerte. Great live album from a great German band. Anyone else know them? Symphonic prog all the way.

Yeah, I have a few albums from them, really well done Symphonic Prog though they got a more commercial sound later on iirc. The one I can recommend the most is Sommerabend.

My favorite is absolutely Neal Morse's Similitude of a Dream

I love classic rock bands and by classic I mean 70s rock bands.
Some progressive rock bands that i like are atomic rooster & flower travellin' band.

That was my favorite release of 2015! Amazing record! It's like sonic soup!
It's actually nice to hear a bit of guitar rippage for once. A lot of prog/electro/ambient/rock whatever has the guitar acting like another keyboard, adding layers to the music. That's fine but sometimes I want to hear a guitar let rip. But I'm not a fan of metal so it's hard to find the right kind of music. This is just right. Funky too with a great bass line throughout.
Can definitely hear a bit of Tangerine Dream/Edgar Froese but the music is pretty well defined in its own right.

Yes! I agree! It's the old school rip guitar and not the boring neoclassical shred that seems to permeate prog these days.

Found this amazing compilation recently, looks to be up for streaming on most of the major sites.

Pain of Salvation's new album came out on Friday, apparently.

First song - I'm already loving it. This is the Pain of Salvation I'm used to.

What album would you recommend for someone who wants to get into Haken?

I listened to The Mountain some time ago but didn't like it.

I just got into Haken a couple of months ago, but I started with The Mountain and thought it was incredible.

Affinity is also amazing, but quite different. Maybe give that a shot? Wish I could be more help, I haven't gotten to the other albums yet.

Anybody listen to Neal Morse in here? I know his lyrics can come off kind of preachy but the music is damn good. His newest album Similitude of a Dream has been on my normal rotation for a couple of months and its great. One thing that kind of bothers me about the album is it sounds like they're trying hard to be Dream Theater at times. Its still damn good though.

I got into Haken last year and I think the Mountain is kind of overrated imo. Affinity imo is probably the easier one to get into, but Visions is really good. I actually haven't heard Aquarius yet since its been out of print until today actually so I dont have any opinion on that one yet.

Try Affinity.

Affinity for sure. Restoration EP is also great. Aquarius and Visions are good but the first has some problems (there's a reason Ross Jennings never tried growling in any of their following albums).

The Mountain is hot trash aside from maybe three songs

Also, for those interested, Soen also released their new album, Lykaia today.

The Mountain is immediately redeemed by having Cockroach King.

Generally I'd agree that Visions is better though, with standouts like Insomnia, Deathless and Visions (title track).

Thanks for the responses everyone.

Listened to the new Soen earlier today. I wanna punch any reviewers who said this was their most varied album in the face.

Everyone thinks The Mountain is their best album. It's awesome, but I really, really, really like Affinity.
