Thanks for this. I'm a prog fan trying to learn to speak Italian so these recommendations are very helpful.

You should check out La Fabricca Dell'assoluto. They are on Spotify. A modern group that mimics the old school sound. Someone else here recommended them earlier and I really love their album.

Really nice band, thanks for the recommendation, another great band/album is La Locanda delle Fate - Forse Le Lucciole non si Amano Piu.

I really understand people not liking PT, i really like them because their music is really modern prog, talk about nowadays problems, and it sounds like it, Live they are really similar but heavier and i like that, now solo SW is another story not a big fan.

While we're discussing Porcupine Tree: most (sadly, still not all) of their albums that were missing on Spotify were added a week or two ago.

They seem to come and go. The missing Snapper-era albums were added just a few months ago only to be taken off a couple of weeks later. The publishing and distribution rights of PT stuff seem to be a tangled mess. Still waiting for Deadwing to get a vinyl reissue.

This is a great thread. I love old days Progressive Rock but didn´t know Oceansize neither Porcupine Tree and thanks to people here i am listening (and liking a lot) both on Spotify right now.

Found a bunch of new bands lately thanks to Bandcamp and clicking through tags (also found a cool Chrome extension that lets you use multiple tags), but Re-Stoned and Tauk are probably my favourite.

There is just so much great music on Bandcamp.

Roger Waters has his new album "Is This the Life We Really Want?" slated for May this year.
Short teaser.

It's kinda crazy that this solo album is 25 after his last. Hoping it's good, but I've always found his lyrics and political stuff worked better as a part of Pink Floyd.

Yeah, far more overtly political as a solo artist though that doesn't bother me much. I'm just hoping this album (probably his last) will be a nice full stop to his career.
Touring the US this year and the world in 2018.

Neither Gilmour or Waters have been particulalry prolific. Though Pink Floyd duties intervened for Gilmour. Waters last work was "Ca Ira" in 2005.

Just saw my favorite band, Pain of Salvation, for the third time last night in Dallas, and the show was awesome! It was really cold out though (for Texas) and it was an outside show with a very small crowd; not nearly as big as when I saw them at Prog Power in Atlanta. Didn't realize how small of crowds they drew until just last night. It was eye-opening and kind of sad.

I'm really liking the addition of Ragnar (right) to the band, for multiple reasons... *swoon*

The political stuff has never bothered me, although sometimes he gets a bit full of himself, but my main issue is I'm always waiting for Gilmour or Wright to come in with some guitar or keyboards on his stuff.

I've seen Waters twice, for Dark Side and The Wall tours, and if I had the chance I would swap both of those experiences to see Gilmour live in a heartbeat.

Gilmour at least put out albums. The gap in his solo career is because Floyd got going again from 1986-1994, and even later with some oft rumoured studio sessions in the late 90s.

Since then he's put out 2 albums and had 3 tours. Waters has at least toured all through out that period, but always playing the same songs, and mostly Floyd.

Ca Ira is an album, but being an opera it's a bit of a different beast. Plus it took him about 17 years to do =P

That's awesome. I'm really bummed I'm going to miss them Saturday. I really wanted to go down to Chicago, especially since it's near my birthday but work shit came up.

Also, I'm fairly certain Ragnar at least used to post around here. I remember someone in the metal thread hinting rather heavily about it and talking about that cruise to the edge thing around the time when he joined. I might be misremembering, though...

Nice dude!

I am seeing them on Tuesday, it'll be second time. Very excited!

Yeah they never really drew big crowds, even in their peak years. First saw them about ten years ago in Budapest. One of my favorite shows & bands altogether. Though I tend to stay away from them nowadays, as their fall from grace has been, well, borderline painful.

Good news for Tool fans yesterday from their website:

TOOL MOVES GEAR INTO NEW SPACE - MAYNARD WORKING ON VOCALS

In speaking with Danny last night, he told me that the band has temporarily MOVED some of their gear into a larger space (across town) where MAYNARD is working on VOCALS for some of the new Tool material. I'm sure that he has already been doing this to some extent, but now he has more room to breathe and a better vocal booth.

Maynard doesn't lay down vocals until a song is finished, so this move is a good sign that a handful of songs are done and they're making good progress.

Thanks for the suggestions last page. Still haven't listened to a lot of them yet. Right now I'm listening to Sleepmakeswaves album, Love Of Cartography.

Not sure if it's been mentioned in the thread before, it just showed randomly in my Youtube suggestions. Really digging their stuff so far. Great momentum and melody in the guitars with a fair bit of electric synth sounds interwoven. So far they seem completely instrumental.

Nice, will see them in 2 months in Germany :)
The new album is really great and I'm working my way through some of the old ones I've been missing so far.

Any Cream fans? They just released a 4-CD deluxe edition of Fresh Cream that not only includes the hard-to-find superior mono mix (stereo mixes in 1966 were astoundingly awful), but also demos and BBC sessions.

Granted, they were more just a blues band at that point, but I'd love to see deluxe editions of the later albums when they started doing odd time signatures and expanding their songs into long jazz/blues/prog jams.

More obscure 70's Finnish progressive rock! I've been listening a lot of Fantasia. They released only one album in -75 and it has become sort of a sought after collector's item. The album got a reissue recently through Svart Records, who have been doing a fantastic job in re-releasing old Finnish progressive like Wigwam, Tasavallan Presidentti, Pekka Pohjola and others. Despite the lyrics being in Finnish, I thought those of you who like 70's prog sound would enjoy them.

Hautausmaani Rannoilla
Depressio

And here's something newer. Saw these guys live a year and a half ago and they had great energy on stage. Great oldschool-esque Finnish progressive rock. I may have posted this here before, but can't remember.

Sammal - Aika on alkamassa

Now I remember why I had heard of this band before. (Giant Bomb's) Dan Ryckert's future brother-in-law is in the band and he tweeted about them some time ago. Small world.

What the hell, really? Huge GB fan and I've seen Thank You Scientist live twice and I had no idea. Fucking weird.

Looks like a good year for Prog, for me at least.
New album by Steve Hackett just out (yet to buy but will soon).
New album by Waters in May.
New album by Dave Kerzner which I'm looking forward to (really liked New World).
New album by Anathema coming in June.
New album by Bjorn Riis (of Airbag) out in May.
Possibly a new album by Steve Wilson this year.

And I'm sure there are others.

Speaking of Floyd, Dave Harris is looking to digitally transfer and remix/re-release the "Identity" album by Zee, a short-lived side project including Richard Wright.

Is it weird that I am VERY excited for this? I love this album and have introduced to it to a few people who really like it. I love prog and 80s pop rock. It's fascinating how prog bands and musicians experimented with pop music and all sorts of different sounds in the 80s.

Anybody here listen to Toy Matinee's first, and only, album? It's quite good, reminds me a lot of the lighter Porcupine Tree stuff.

I like that one. Queen of Misery and There Was A Little Boy are my two favorites. There is also 3rd Matinee with Richard Page from Mr. Mister and Pages instead of Kevin Gilbert. I haven't listened to that one yet, but I assume it is at least decent.

Waters album out on June 2nd. Track released "Smell the Roses".
Interestingly the album is produced by Nigel Godrich who's worked with Radiohead and Beck. Not co-produced but produced. Interesting.
I like it. It's grown on me. Starts as a fairly standard rock song, similar to What God Wants for example but has an interesting middle segment. It also sounds surprisingly raw, not at all over produced. Hoping the rest of the album continues in a similar way.

Holy crap, this is really fucking good.

Hmmm, I'm pretty disappointed at this new Waters' track.

It sounds like more of the same, it gives me all the "I already listened to this long time ago" vibe, sadly.

I confess though, that I feel a bit dumb for asking a guy old as hell to reinvent himself cause obviously that's not going to happen. His best more creative days happened long time ago.

I'll reserve my final opinion until I'm able to listen to the whole album, of course.

God I wish Gilmour and him would just get along before they die, they could probably make a super interesting album!

Never going to happen. And they kinda' 'get along' with Waters appearing with Gilmour at a benefit gig which led to Gilmour playing Comfortably Numb at a Waters 'The Wall' gig. Neither, however, feels the need to work together at all.

Ragnar Zolberg is gone from Pain of Salvation, which really sucks because his writing definitely made The Passing Light of Day so amazing. There's a lot of shit he outright wrote or had the demo of from earlier in life. It's also pretty obvious Daniel wasn't giving him that credit.

Also I'm fairly certain he used to post on Neogaf, particularly in the metal thread. I remember him posting about going on that cruise with them.

Pain of Salvation's statement:

After a few years of working together with Ragnar, I feel that we have come to a point where it is necessary to part ways. It feels very sad, because we are losing a great vocalist and stage personality in Ragnar. It felt great writing the new album together with him, and I am very thankful for that time. We all are. But with time it has become clear that his true place is not in this band. Musically, it has worked very well, but there are so many other variables that need to click in order to make a band strong and stable.

We are not going into a period of uncertainty, but one of deliberate change and strength. We have a great record label and a great management/booking company that have both told us that they understand our decision, and that they back us up and support us fully through this. All scheduled shows will happen as planned. How? Well, we are happy to announce that, starting today, Johan Hallgren will be returning to the band as a full member again, and we will go full throttle ahead through this. We are very happy about seeing him back onboard, and we are sure you will accept him back with open arms, as will we.

One thing that we are looking forward to a lot is the regained possibility to meet up and rehearse more often, which is one of the main reasons why I started playing music in the first place: to have that small and devoted tribe, standing in a sweaty rehearsing room, sharing a stupid dream. And then making it come true.

So, a new chapter in the life of Pain of Salvation, and yet not. We hurt, we heal, we rise. And we keep delivering, that is a promise. We hope for your love and support through this. We want to thank Ragnar for the good years together with us, and wish him all the luck with his future endeavours. And again, we warmly welcome Johan Hallgren back to our family!

Peace,
Daniel & Pain of Salvation

What the band members and Johan himself has to say about his return to the band:

Johan Hallgren:
“Already when I quit the band, I felt that I really wanted to come back. This feels fun as hell, and I will go into this with full force – hook, line and sinker. I have promised myself to supersede everyone’s expectations of my return. This is something I know well, and I am damn good at it. And more than that, I have really missed them all – it’s a wonderful gang!”

Daniel D2 Karlsson:
“I am very happy to see Johan back – I actually feel quite exalted. Johan is a wonderful human being with a warm heart, and he’s got a fantastic charisma as a musician. I am convinced our fans will welcome him with a warm embrace.”

Léo Margarit:
“It’s great that Johan is back – a good friend. I am certain the fans will be very happy, he was a beloved band member, and many were sad to see him go. It will be very fun to play with him again!”

Ragnar's statement:
I quit Pain of Salvation in 2013 after having been in the band for 1 year only. It was nothing like what I had expected and I had come to understand why some members before me had also left. At that time Roger stepped in and did the acoustic tour in which he did a very good job!

About one year later I was asked to do one more gig, prognation at sea, I agreed. When I showed up for rehearsals Daniel had been hospitalised and asked me to fill in his shoes for the show, after he got better he asked me to join the band again and write the next album with him. I love to make albums so I decided to stick around a little longer.

Recently, with our album In the Passing Light of Day the band has been doing considerably better. An album which Daniel and I wrote together during a 2 year time period and I also lent some of my previous compositions to it. With a lot of dedication, sacrifices and help from various people we managed to go from almost being dropped from the record label to selling a descent amount of albums and playing to sold out shows. Something that I am very proud of and obviously very grateful for the love shown to us by the kind people attending our shows.

I have had a great time with my friends Gustaf Hielm, Daniel Karlsson and Léo Margarit. I am going to miss hanging out with them as much, they are the biggest reason I managed to stay all this time. <3

As it turned out, everybody worked on the album as a team, but as soon as our album was finished last year, the band leader started acting in a very similar manner as what we have been seeing of the band Ghost recently. It was clear that this was not “our" album anymore, but his. I got payed a small amount of 1000 euros for my work for those 2 years, that did not even cover my travel expenses.

Although PoS have now been doing quite good business wise, being in this band has been bad business from the beginning and has cost way more than what I’ve had in return, both mentally and economically. Minimum wage is not to be expected when you play to sold out shows and full venues at our standards. Neither is pessimism and criticism after almost every gig.

I have spoken my mind about all of this while still doing what I could to keep a professional relation towards everything, after all it is also my music that we have been playing and I have wanted everything to go as smoothly as possible despite the unjust treatment I have faced.

Instead of making amends, offering better salary or even giving credit where it’s due I was instead asked by Daniel to leave the band yesterday.

I am happy for everything I have learned in the recent years and the people I have gotten to know through this adventure and I am also very happy to be moving on. One thing that I have learned and think should be kept in mind is: Never take credit for others peoples work, that’s just not nice and extremely disrespectful.
Thank you!

Holy shit, Gildenlow sounds like a dick.

I'm a pretty massive Gildenlow fanboy, but he's always come off as a fucking egotistical douche in a lot of ways.

I accept it because most of the musicians I listen to seem to tend that way. Notable exception seems to be Devin Townsend. Mikael Akerfeldt too maybe.

But yeah I don't know how PoS continues. Over the last like half decade Ragnar has sung all the difficult parts live and even in the new album he's doing a lot of vocal legwork that Johan probably can't fill.

That sucks that Ragnar is leaving. I agree with what was said about Daniel, he comes across that way. It's unfortunate because he IS the band. But it is unfair to not properly recognize the contributions of the other band members financially and otherwise.

It's especially unfair here because it's really fucking obvious Daniel wasn't "the band" in the way he had been in the past. Meaningless was literally a Ragnar song renamed. One of the crucial parts from On a Tuesday was also Ragnar's early song. It was literally the same recording he did when he was 17.
