I'm sure the new songs are really amazing live. The whole album sounds like something that would translate well into a live setting.

Did they play the encore of Radioactive Toy and Ljudet Innan, or something else? That's the encore I want in Chicago. I guess they didn't do that in D.C.

We had a 1 song encore which was Radioactive Toy and it was one of the best songs of the night.

Index was also amazing, and they played Raider II in its entirety.

They didn't play the Raven album all the way through in one shot but cut it up (they did play every song on the album), and a handful of tracks from GFD.

Sound quality was top notch, as always.

Just found out I'm working with Daevid Allen next month...

Progging sweet! :D

Gentle Giant are quite possibly the greatest prog rock band of all time Imo. Check out octopus, its one of their best. Also any King Crimson stuff up to 1980

Listened to King Crimson's Islands today, and I'm always in awe that it's never really that highly thought of. I love that album a ton. It blew me away on first listen.

Also, picked up the Steven Wilson record store day picture disc! I'm such a huge fanboy for his crap, lol

Speaking of King Crimson, here is a shameless plug for my bands cover of Red.

Good stuff. Went through some snippets of that whole album and it sounds pretty good, man. I'll give it a full listen sometime later.

The holy trinity of prog is Pink Floyd, Genesis and Yes. Then in the next circle of the pantheon of prog is ELP, King Crimson, Jethro Tull.

Can anyone offer up a band to help me kick my Cardiacs obsession?

Bands I like: Pink Floyd, Tool, early Muse, Cardiacs, Mars Volta, Omar. I want something out there, and I mean realllllyyyyy out there.

This may not be realllllyyyyy out there (and you probably already know this) but if you like Cardiacs you'd probably like Disco Volante by Mr. Bungle.

While they definitely are more of a progressive metal band, Dream Theater continues to be my favorite in the prog genre.

I love Dream Theater, but their last like 2-3 albums kind of lost me.

King Crimson probably. You may want to check out Battles as well. Not really 'prog' or anything, but they're out there.

I'm sorry. There's nothing even remotely like the Cardiacs out there. Believe me, I've tried.

But here are a few suggestions nevertheless:

I love Dream Theater, but their last like 2-3 albums kind of lost me.

I guess my only real problem with DT is with Black Clouds and Silver Linings. Some tracks are good, but The Shattered Fortress feels like a giant, boring retread. Almost everything good about that track was done in a previous one. And the Count of Tuscany would be awesome if it weren't for those abysmal lyrics. I mean I know prog lyrics can be rubbish, but hell not that bad!

Other than that, I rather enjoy their last one, and I strangely found myself playing Systematic Chaos a good amount (despite probably not thinking too highly of it technically).

I was going to recommend Oceansize to him... mostly because the guys in Oceansize were mega Cardiacs fans. And because it's always a good opportunity to recommend Oceansize.

Orphaned Land revealed their cover art and track listing

I'm really looking forward to it. Their stuff is usually really unique sounding, and ORwarriOR was damned great. Really dense album, but with realistically not much filler.

The new album from Spock's Beard... maaaaan, it's so fucking great. Dat Afterthoughts...

I'm digging it right now. Great album. It's behind a few other prog releases this year for me (like Steven Wilson and Riverside's), but it's still pretty solid.

The only 2 songs I can listen to on Black Clouds are The Shattered Fortress and The Count of Tuscany. The Shattered Fortress is a nice close to the Twelve Steps Suite, and yeah, the Count of Tuscany has hilariously, embarrassingly bad lyrics.

I suppose the Shattered Fortress might be a nice close to the twelve steps suite, but my problem is that I'm not fucking listening to the twelve steps suite. On its own and on the album it's an abysmal song. Just an atrocious rehash if other junk. The other songs in the suite fit far better onto their albums. I'm still thankful they're done with that whole thing, because I didn't really like that they had to throw on this themed track on every album.

I really dig A Rite of Passage (it's catchy, what can I say?), Wither, and The Best of Times (this one reminds me a bit of a song off SFaM).

Saw Jethro Tull (well, Ian Anderson techincally) do his Thick as a Brick 1 and 2 tour in Tokyo a few days ago. Great show. The guy still has tons of energy. TAAB1 is a great album. Ian can't really sing anymore but at least he brought in the other guy with him to do much of the singing. I think they also cut out a skit from the regular performances because no one in the audience understands English (the one where Ian brings an audience member on stage to give him a prostate exam). Also, I wasn't sure if intro video, intermission video, the pictures they show on the screen behind them, etc were supposed to elaborate on the story of TAAB or just be random stuff because they were relatively useless. TAAB2 has its moments but is overall pretty inconsistent. I was bored throughout much of it.

Nice to hear :D As far as I know Anderson will do a Third Chapter of TaaB. And yeah, the scenes are quite random.

He's doing a third one?

Seems like such a cash in to be doing sequels this late in his career and so far divorced from the original. I guess I can forgive him since the 2nd one wasn't too bad. Still, odd.

People in this thread like Dream Theater? Like... in an ironic way or something?

I'm not trying to be snooty or anything, it's just ...Dream Theater? Really?

Do they have any video game music covers? I bet they could do a cool cover of a MegaMan song or something.

Don't like power-metal-type things like Masterplan or Dragonforce eh? =P
I like the former and not the latter

I like them. I haven't listened to a lot of their songs admittedly, but the lyrics are pretty cool.

Oh, I was actually thinking of Dragonforce! Lol, my bad. But yeah, they fucking suck.

Dream Theater is still just mediocre to me but not completely bad.

Sure, why not? I mean barring some of their songs they're not offensively bad or anything. I'm not going to sit here and laud the virtues of Dream Theater, because I probably wouldn't put more than an album or two on any all time ranking lists, and even that one is slowly going down my list as time wears on, but they're not awful. They're fun stuff.

I think 6DOIT and SFaM are legit great albums, though.

Dream Theater is good. If they had a more appealing singer then I think they could've really hit it big. They're great musicians and write good stuff, but it's not that the singer is bad, he just has a niche kind of voice. I guess you could say someone like Geddy Lee or Jon Anderson also have non-mainstream, niche kind of voices but I never found LaBrie's singing that appealing.

I'm sorry. There's nothing even remotely like the Cardiacs out there. Believe me, I've tried.

But here are a few suggestions nevertheless: *Huge batch of awesome suggestions*

Thanks heaps man! I'm pretty sure it was your mention of Cardiacs last year that got me to investigate them in the first place, so I owe you a huge debt.

I'm digging Oceansize and Gentle Giant at the moment, but I'll investigate listed in more depth everything once I digest my current musical meal.

King Crimson probably. You may want to check out Battles as well. Not really 'prog' or anything, but they're out there.

I've only listened to Court of the Crimson King, which is rad. Which other King Crimson albums would you guys recommend?

I really like both of these! Need to get on the Zappa train as well, but again don't know where to start.

Thanks everyone! Really appreciate the suggestions!

King Crimson trio line-up (Fripp/Bruford/Wetton):
Red
Larks' Tongues in Aspic
The Night Watch (live)

King Crimson new wave line-up (Fripp/Bruford/Belew/Levin):
Discipline

King Crimon in the 90ies (Fripp/Bruford/Belew/Gunn/Mastelotto):
B'Boom: Live in Argentina

I always suggest that people digest King Crimson in chronological order and pay a bit of attention to who was in the band and the time periods. I think you get a lot more out of it and appreciate them more than just jumping around to what people might think are the better ones. Especially with the new remasters now, they all sound great.

I mean my personal standout ones other than In the Court are Red, Islands, Thrak, and probably the live album The Great Deceiver. I think you lose a lot just going to those ones, though.

Please, enligthen us with your clearly superior taste...

(Actually, don't)

The Great Deceiver is a great album but it's a 4CD set with a huge amount of overlap. Some songs are featured two or three times, because the same songs were played at multiple shows.

Regarding Dream Theater, I actually really like James LaBrie's voice (but I do admit it is very niche).

Systematic Chaos was okay, and Black Clouds was only alright, but I really enjoyed A Dramatic Turn of Events.

If I had to rank the albums, it would go:

1. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
2. Scenes from a Memory
3. Images and Words
4. A Dramatic Turn of Events
5. Octavarium
6. Awake
7. Black Clouds and Silver Linings
8. Train of Thought
9. Falling Into Infinity
10. Systematic Chaos
11. When Dream and Day Unite

Don't get me wrong though, I generally love almost everything they put out. I am a true die-hard fan. I've done meet and greets with the new lineup and back when Portnoy was still in the band, and I have signed items from all current and former members.

I'm seeing Steven Wilson tonight and I'm really excited about it. The PT concert I saw in 2010 is still easily the best concert (best live performance of anything) I've ever seen and so I've got high expectations.

You'll enjoy it then. It's pretty much the exact same format by with Steven Wilson songs. Execellent sound quality and musicianship.

I've got the Get All You Deserve Bluray so I know what I'm in for. But as good as a bluray sounds, it still doesn't compare to being there.

Yeah I don't think live albums are generally a good way of getting into KC, even though they are generally an insanely great live band.

As I said, I recommend going through their real catalog chronologically, then when you really get a feel for their sound throughout the years, pop into some of the stellar live releases like TGD and Absent Lovers, and they'll have much more impact.

I'm seeing him tomorrow, and I'm excited as hell! The last SW concert was amazing. The PT concerts have all been amazing, too. I was actually at the filming of Arriving Somewhere and Octane Twisted.

I wish he was doing a signing or something, though. I want to get some more of my deluxe editions signed! Might bring Raven down with me just in case. (Already got the deluxes for The Incident and Grace for Drowning signed)

I don't get the LaBrie voice hate. He's not stellar or anything, but I can't imagine many different singers fitting with the music. It works well, and he's light years better than a lot of the DT-esque copy cat type bands that have popped up over the years.

My rankings would probably be similar:

1. Scenes from a Memory
2. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
3. Images and Words
4. A Dramatic Turn of Events
5. Train of Thought
6. Octavarium
7. Systematic Chaos
8. Falling Into Infinity
9. Black Clouds and Silver Linings
10. Awake
11. When Dream and Day Unite

I'm sure with the ridiculous amount of bands on that list you have likely heard of them, but I was surprised it wasn't on your list.

They aren't progressive (more symphonic, really), but do you like Nightwish?

Back in the last year of middle school and through middle school and high school I was a die hard Nightwish fan. I was not pleased when Tarja left the band, and I never really liked Nightwish after the Tarja period.

I do love the instrumental parts of the new Nightwish, but I never liked Anette as a singer. Hopefully now though they will get a singer who can do vocals that can do Nightwish justice, and not something that every other symphonic band has.

Nighwish - Ghost Love Score, Live With Floor Jansen

In a way though, Symphonic Metal is a bit connected to Progressive, as well as Power Metal, cause they use more unconventional song structures than most other metal genres. Some Symohonic bands adapt more progressive patterns, like Serenity.

My favorite Dream Theater album is Images and Words, and my favourite song is without a doubt Another Day. For those of you who are interested in Dream Theater like bands (by that I mean slightly similar in style, but still original) I would recommend Bad Salad, Deeexpus, Disperse, Ice Age, Kingcrow (at least the latest album) and Mystery. It's possible that I missed some bands, but it's hard to keep track of all my favourite bands at all times. Which was why I made that list of mine.
