Project Cars review thread

Game Informer: 8.5/10 http://www.gameinformer.com/games/p.../05/06/project-cars-game-informer-review.aspx
In a genre where it can be hard to differentiate yourself, Project Cars makes its mark. It's not as strong as it could be in all areas, but Slightly Mad Studios' attention to detail and racing chops make the game a contender.

Eurogamer.net: Recommended http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-05-06-project-cars-puts-the-sport-back-into-motorsport-games
[...]you'll find that Slightly Mad has built a motorsport game for the people, at once flexible and uncompromising: a single-minded hymn to the gritty thrills of the pit-lane and the back straight. There's room for improvement and we'll be watching future updates with keen interest, but these foundations are strong indeed.

IGN: 8.9/10 http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/05...ampaign=Feed:+ign/articles+(IGN+All+Articles)
Deep and demanding but incredibly user-friendly, Project CARS looks great, sounds fantastic, and feels even better. The action is ferocious and tactical, the weather effects are awesome, and it’s brimming with content to explore. This is real racing done right.

Gamesradar: 3.5/5 http://www.gamesradar.com/project-cars-review/
At times, it looks as good as real life
Superb weather system
Open-ended structure means no unlocking
Immensely satisfying when you finally win
Inconsistent quality across events
The AI needs a refresher course in how to drive safely

Gamereactor UK: 9/10 http://www.gamereactor.eu/reviews/308434/Project+CARS/
The bottom line is that Project CARS manages to refresh the racing simulation genre, and in doing so sets a new level that future entries into this genre need to, at the very least, match in order to compete with the competition. And even then, we suspect that Slightly Mad Studios will have refined this title further in the form of future DLC and patches.

Hardcoregamer: 4/5 http://www.hardcoregamer.com/2015/05/06/review-project-cars/147245/
Simply put, Project CARS is simulation racing done right. The subtlety of the nearly countless gameplay tweaks, combined with a robust open Career mode, makes for an experience that racing fans should fall in love with. Of course, none of this would be possible without driving that feels tight, workable and exciting, which is certainly present in droves. Oh, and it’s hard not to notice that this is quite possibly the best looking racing game of all time. Outside of its cluttered user interface, everything about Project CARS seems to be thoughtfully designed, which should be a testament to having the power of the community assisting development. Polyphony Digital and Turn 10 Studios should be on the look-out, a new challenger has approached.

PC Gamer: 83/100 http://www.pcgamer.com/project-cars-2/
Beautiful, bold and varied. Slightly Mad are uncompromising in their simulation

Biogamer Girl: 8.7/10 http://www.biogamergirl.com/2015/05/project-cars-video-game-review.html
Project CARS impressed me right from the start, but only when I entered the career and online modes I saw how good this game really is. There’s a ton of content here, and everything just manages to blend in together to create a stellar experience. I loved this game, and even though it does require a pretty powerful computer to enjoy it at full details, I think that it’s well worth the investment! Check it out right now, especially if you are a racing fan, because this is something you do not want to miss!

PSU: 8/10 http://www.psu.com/review/26686/Project-CARS-PS4-Review
In summary, Project CARS isn’t quite the complete package as it stands right now, with our main gripe being the performance of enemy A.I. and some of the glitches we’ve encountered. Nevertheless, it does feel like it’s built for a long-term audience, a community-focused racer that will no doubt keep on growing and improving. And Project CARS actually turns out to be more accessible than you might think in terms of the way the cars handle on the easiest setting, despite the fact that it's obviously designed for the core simulation fans. With so much on offer from the outset, the sandbox approach is refreshing, while its scenery and track design never fails to impress. The cars are a lot of fun to drive, too, and the challenge of tuning your car and nailing a track to perfection is as addictive as racing games get. While Project CARS doesn’t quite roar past the championship finish line in a blaze of glory, it feels ready to burst out of the qualifiers onto the main scene.

Gamewatcher: 8/10 http://www.gamewatcher.com/reviews/project-cars-review/12226
Bearing in mind that it was impossible for me to assess the quality and stability of the online components of the game, but it was still clear to see that Project CARS is a bloody good racing simulator. Those of you looking for more of an arcade racer may be better off looking elsewhere, especially at launch price, but if you’re looking for a beautiful and in depth racing experience then shelling out £40 on Project CARS will be money well spent.

Digitallydownloaded: 4.5/5 http://www.digitallydownloaded.net/2015/05/review-project-cars-sony-playstation-4.html
Project CARS is a truly fine racing game, and for PlayStation 4 owners this will be the first next-generation racing game of worth for serious revheads to sink their teeth into. Racing beginners, or people who are used to racing games where powerslides are enough to get around corners may feel very frustrated with this one at first, but I can't think of a racing game that is more worth taking the time to get to know, and master, than this one.

There’s a number of rough edges then, and it takes a while to get used to, but there’s still a lot to like about Project CARS. Put a little effort into tweaking the game to suit you, and there’s plenty to enjoy here, whether it’s tackling the unique career, dropping in for a single quick race or heading online to duke it out on track with your friends.

Design-wise, so far it holds up. At times it can be incredibly pretty, though at no point would you say it looks better than DriveClub. The menus (which you’ll spend a lot of time in) are the easy to navigate tiles that are all the rage at the moment, though they could perhaps be better presented.

n3rdabl3: http://www.n3rdabl3.co.uk/2015/05/project-cars-pre-review-a-truly-fantastic-racer/
Overall though, in few words, Project CARS is a pretty fantastic game, it’s so far scoring quite highly here at n3, we’re just hoping that as soon as players begin to populate the servers, we don’t end up with a DriveClub situation. From what we’ve seen so far though, we’d definitely recommend the game for the career and solo play alone.

The only real downside comes in the form of menu systems that can be boorish and awkward in their design. Some of the colour choices are difficult to understand, with text and background colours sometimes so similar in tone that the former is nearly impossible to read.
Such underwhelming menus limit the excitement generated by winning a race or being crowned champion, as the sense of joy is immediately muted when you leave the track and delve back into the career's navigation tools.
That shouldn't put you off, though. Project Cars is a brave step forward, one that this genre has been in dire need of for some time. When you experience just how well a racing game can work when the training wheels are taken off and you're given free rein to act as you wish, you'll struggle to understand just why the mainstream racing franchises didn't incorporate the idea sooner. Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport have just gained a new podium partner.

Carthrottle https://www.carthrottle.com/post/project-cars-is-finally-here-but-does-it-live-up-to-the-hype/
Perhaps it’s been a victim of its own hype, but I can’t help but feel mildly disappointed with Project Cars. It never really promised to be anything other than beautiful, and on that front it’s certainly delivered, but with all the promotion using real racing drivers, I was hoping for a slightly more sim-like experience.

The career mode looks vast and well thought out, though it’s incomplete in my review copy so I’ll revisit that in a couple of weeks, and with nobody to play before release I’ve avoided the online experience. Stay tuned for further updates.

The fact there are still a few bugs on release is just an aspect of modern gaming we’ve all had to get used to, but to be fair to the Project Cars team, they have waited as long as possible to make it run as smooth as possible. With a bit of TLC and patch-delivering DLC, this game will be brilliant. It hasn’t quite done enough to topple the big guns quite yet, but it’s a valiant effort and is genuinely great fun to play.

Shacknews: 6/10 http://www.shacknews.com/article/89449/project-cars-review-bringing-up-the-rear
There are over 70 vehicles available to drive in Project Cars, and they all look and sound accurate to their real-world representations. I could only assume they also perform just like the real thing as I have never sat behind the wheel of any of these cars, like the BMW Z4 GT3 or McLaren P1. All of my previous video-game driving experience went out the window as I needed to rely on real-world driving mechanics to succeed in Project Cars. Instead of keeping the gas pushed down for the majority of the race, I needed to ease off of it a lot more as I finessed my car through the twists and turns of each track. I also needed to make sure I didn’t accelerate too far into a turn or else I would find myself sliding off of the track.

Because of that, I feel Project Cars won’t receive the mass appeal games like Forza Horizon 2 or DriveClub have received. Instead, only those who are really into realistic driving simulators may flock towards Project Cars, although they might get bored easily considering there really aren’t any unique game modes either. It carries a sense of realism in spades, but there isn't much under the hood. At least it supports VR headsets, so I could also see those looking to get that level of immersion within their racing games giving Project Cars a shot. Outside of those target demographics, Project Cars will most likely frustrate mainstream racing fans with its real-world driving mechanics, but may entertain realistic driving simulator fans who know their way through similar games. One thing is for sure: Slightly Mad has created one beautiful racing sim that highlights the look and feel of high performace vehicles.

Softpedia: 8.5/10 http://www.softpedia.com/reviews/games/pc/Project-Cars-Review-480298.shtml
Project Cars is a great racing simulator with a huge amount of cars, tracks, and options to customize. While newcomers might not appreciate the heavy-handed driving aids or get overwhelmed by the staggering number of things to experience, it's worth the commitment.

Attack of the Fanboy: 4.5/5 http://attackofthefanboy.com/reviews/project-cars-review/
The collaboration between Slightly Mad Studios and its community of fans have led to fantastic results. Project Cars is one the best, and most authentic racing experiences we’ve seen in quite some time.

GQ: http://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/entert...6/project-cars-game-review-bandai-slightlymad
Some will complain at the lack of licensed cars, but they're missing the point. Project Car's excellent career mode will have you jumping from one racing class to another - learning and re-learning as you progress is all part of the challenge, and it is one that never fails to satisfy. At the game's peak, in a 24-hour endurance race against 30 other competitors, with rain lashing down and darkness setting in, Project Cars becomes something truly spectacular.

Project CARS Review In Progress - IGN

Project CARS isn’t for everybody. It’s a serious, deep, and demanding racing simulation for people who like their motorsport pure. There’s no pop punk soundtrack, or explosive takedowns, or generous rewinds. Project CARS has set out to capture the experience of manhandling a real racing car around a long list of some of the world’s most famous racing circuits and, despite a couple of frayed edges, it has thoroughly succeeded. Tough but satisfying and cruel but fair, Project CARS is a truly fantastic racing game with the potential to become a real force in the genre. But it’s not for everybody.

It is, however, for anybody – and this is an important distinction. Project CARS is probably the most user-friendly racing game I’ve ever played.

It would be nice to also put some quotes in it. It's not only about being the first to post it.

Edit: it seems that some of the reviews are focusing on PS4 version, would be also nice to have the version mentioned.

Just wanted to help the OP...

The Gamesradar review complains about the A.I., on the other hand Oli Welsh from Eurogamer praises the A.I. as one of the things pCARS does better than GT/Forza:

Project Cars achieves this in a couple of ways. The first is with superior opponent AI. Neither the mindless racing-line drones of Gran Turismo nor the theatrical fakes you come across in other games, who conveniently stage passes and crashes in your line of sight, these virtual racers display a respect for track position and an awareness that contact is usually a bad idea. This is a game in which you can overtake by getting your elbows out and muscling your opponents off their line - as opposed to just braking late, pointing your nose at the apex and hoping you clear them before they smack into the side of you. When you're often racing in a field of identical cars, with no performance advantage, that's crucial. It's also brilliant fun, requiring a judicious mix of courage, aggression and timing.

The gamesradar review doesn't sound like a 3.5/5. Before reading the score i thought it was a 4 or 4.5 based on the praise he gave. Took a lot of points for bugs that hopefully patches will fix.

The Birthday Skeleton
Gamereactor.eu - 9/10 (PC version)

There's a purity to the progression here, no money is earned or XP unlocked. Instead, you sign up to a race team and drive primarily for points. If successful, you'll be waved onward with an invitation to a higher class of racing. And there's plenty of divisions to sink your teeth and time into. Starting with karts and smaller production cars, you'll be racing towards choosing between various GT classic or Formula racers, and forward to the legendary Le Mans prototypes towards the latter end of your career progression.

+ Looks great, deep racing experience, in-depth career mode
- Lack of cars, some audio issues.

The IGN piece is very good. Altough i didn't liked the comparison to Grid Autosport it said a lot of good things. Worth the read.

I'm surprised someone on the mainstream US media understood this game.

I checked Gamersyde's video yesterday ( Xbone gameplay ). I noticed lack of proper AA and annoying stuttering.

So has anyone removed points for it not being open world yet? :p

Seriously though, good to see it getting decent scores. If I don't hear anything at E3 about the next GT being released sooner rather than later I might pick this up. :)

does it have split screen on PS4?

Tempted - the comments so far seem mixed but I like the sound of the core of the game, also its approachability which may raise the hackles on the serious sim guys but is music to my ears.

Slightly unsure about the weird ghosting on PS4 being talked about, plus the potential for the rumble triggers on Xbox to give that version the edge (but it needs to be solid 60fps for me to consider that, and the previous DF impressions with the XB1 version having more frame drops makes me nervous that even if they improved it, it may still be more susceptible to drops than the PS4)

I have to say I'm really happy about the positive response so far and I had slightly lower expectations due to higher learning curve and overall "realistic" aspects of the game.

No split-screen. I personally would go for PS4 as I think it has better framerate (I don't know, but it's more likely), higher resolution and I personally feel that the IQ in general is much better even though there is that ghosting (which I really don't think is that noticeable as evident in the streams and videos so far).

Have you played FC4 for example? It uses the same temporal AA solution that do cause slight ghosting, but you really don't notice it during gameplay and it really improves the IQ. (reduces distant sub pixel shimmer)

OK, I've not got the game yet, but I've heard less than positive things from people who have the XBO version.

Might pay to wait if your a multi plat gamer.

I played the XO version for four hours yesterday. The game ran fine except during a qualify on Oulton Park (Renault Clio cup). The framerate dropped like crazy, like unplayable crazy.

The race afterwards was fine.

I also encountered a bug which wouldn't let me finish a race.

Given the lack of decent racing games on PS4, I might have to risk it on Project CARS. Since I tend to lean on arcade racers, hope it's worth it.

As someone who only buys a racing game once every few years this could take the place of forza as the game i buy this time. Although i am going to wait till forza 6 before I make that choice.

Already pCARS is reviewing higher than I thought it might. I didn't doubt the quality and content, i just thought a lot of reviewers wouldn't 'get' what it's trying to achieve. The scores are even more encouraging considering the mention of bugs and glitches (sadly not unexpected at launch these days) - once those are inevitable (hopefully!) patched out and other tweaks made pCARS should be be even more complete, especially once DLC starts rolling out.
