Yes.

It's an Alien movie without the Aliens.

It's the Space Jockey movie.

They have stated this numerous times.

It's a movie that takes place before Alien. Calling it Alien 5 would suggest it is a sequel to the other films. And outside of that, it is a different story. It isn't an Alien movie per se.

Takes place in the same universe as the Alien film but the universe is much bigger than what happend in that film. It's a standalone story that as Scott said "has strands of Alien DNA."

What part of my posts evoked that kind of pretentious response?

"It's an Alien movie without the Aliens."

Scott has been explicit that while set in the same universe, that was merely the launching point for the story, which in scope, style and story are very different from Alien. It would be misleading to call it Alien 5, both because it takes place earlier, and because it's only tangentially related to that film. It's set in the same universe, but that does not make it an Alien film.

I can't think of any other films like this, though. It's not prequel, not a sequel, but a related story in the same fictional universe. Have we seen that sort of thing before?

I fully expect us to see the Space Jockey race, as well as a proto-Chestburster, if not some proto-Facehuggers. Hell, we already saw the ship and quite possibly the Space Jockey in the trailer.

Let us assume you are right and that Scott and Lindelof have been outright lying the entire time. It still takes place before Alien. Exactly how is calling it Alien 5 a good idea, again?

The average moviegoer does not think Space Jockey = Alien. Having Alien in the title would make no sense as it brings up images of this to the average moviegoer:

Also Alien 5 would confuse people into thinking it's a sequel to Alien: Resurrection or takes place after it.

Would not surprise me.

But "lying" implies malice.

They could have called it Alien: Prometheus, or something. I don't know. Assess in seats.

But it seems like they are just too schizophrenic about this whole "it is an alien film but it's not but it is" deal. There have been plenty of prequels that had nothing to do with the original film that still held the name.

I think Prometheus is a great title, but it just seems from everything I've seen, that it is going to tie into the first Alien film more than they are letting on. I'm not saying it's a bad thing that its not called Alien 5, and I don't see why this is such a big deal. But apparently, that makes me hostile and pretentious or something.

Are we allowed to discuss what we think the plot is about?
There is one story plot which I really like that I heard was a leaked script.
I didn't really like the one by the person who pieced together the film from the trailers (the link that Harry potter posted earlier in this thread).

That's actually a really good point.

I think that is also why they haven't actually shown an xenomorph in the trailers.

They are that scary anymore, I remember seeing alien and aliens when I was a kid and being scared of them. The the AVP films showed them too much and a lot of people are desensitized to them now.

I bet there will be a Xeno in this film but only glimpses of it to build up suspense before it is shown full at the end of the film.

Is Theron's character an android. I think so, her hair is perfect and I reckon it is a female hand waking up noomi from the cryo sleep in the trailer.

you'll all want to shoot me in the face but I only now watched it in glorious 1080p, and jesus fuck is this thing gorgeous.

Also, it is utterly amazing that it has 4.6 million views in six days!

pretty sure my brother's theory about this movie just spoiled the entire thing for me. his theory is basically this:
Humanity has advanced beyond belief. The gods (our gods) are matched now. They invite us to meet them. They have the eggs waiting for us. Why? The alien eggs are a plague, a Noah's flood to wipe out humanity because they can't as they would have done in our younger evolution. But when the company comes along they find the ultimate weapon, another biologically engineered organism by our maker.

No, it's not, and Scott has said that over and over. Unless your perspective is so narrow that only an "Alien" movie can be set in the same fictional universe.

I think they may end up pissing a lot of people off by marketing it in an Alien-esque way when the movie really isn't an alien movie at all.

So basically, it's not Inception.

I wouldn't say Inception asks you to leave your brain at the door. It is more akin to preparing your brain for a tantric massage and getting somebody who just lies on top of you for 2.5 hours, whispering in your ear - hinting at the things they might do to you if they were more talented.

I assume you mean the echoes of the first film's trailer in the Prometheus ones. I suspect only avid fans of that film will be familiar with the homage to it. Otherwise, the marketing is quite different in tone.

One thing is for sure: I'm really sick of that blaring siren.

Yes the similarities between the trailers.

I can't get enough. Siren's make everything more exciting in previews. PROOF.

That siren noise makes the trailer. So tense. So good. I can't stop watching the trailer for the 2nd half nightmare.

Guesses about the story:
Charlize theron is also an android like Fassbender, as Ridley alluded that there might be two Androids on the movie.(She's manhandling Fassbender in the Imax trailer) Also, seems that the host(if we can call it that) of the alien creature might be the Tom Hardy lookalike, which would make sense.

Is there any topic on earth that you can't somehow tie in with a criticism of Christopher Nolan?

Personally I think that siren is an awesome audial effect, especially for the kind of movie it is. I also love how it echoes the original trailer. Pretty cool move that.
