Massive free-roaming explosion-fest from Radical Entrainment comes to light

The latest entry in the free-roaming blast-em-genre has been revealed in the pages of UK Official Xbox Magazine.

Dubbed Prototype, and from Scarface dev Radical, it'll put you in the demented shoes of Alex Mercer, a genetically engineered hoody who can, among other things, slash baddies in half and climb up the side of skyscrapers.

Put him in the middle of a bustling New York (we're already debating in the office whether it's prettier than GTA IV's Liberty City) where a human-mutating virus has caused a battle between mutants and the military, and you've got something that's a bit like Crackdown meets The Darkness.

Vivendi is wheeling out the "living, breathing world" line for Prototype's version of New York, although we have to say the amount of NPCs visible in the screenshots is ridiculous.

If they can actually manage to put some decent AI on Prototype's pedestrians, it'll at least be very impressive technologically.

Alex's big bag of tricks include super-human strength, the ability to cover himself in scale-like shields and the ability to send matter through the ground, impaling baddies on giant spikes.

He can also shape shift into the identity of his victims, which OXM notes can be used to take the guise of an army officer and call in air strikes.

It's still a ways off (it's currently penned for winter 2008), but if Radical can emulate the freedom and outright fun factor of Crackdown, it could be on for a winner.

Oh, and is online co-op too much to ask for?

Good? It sounds incredibly awesome. Possibly the most awesome. Gameinformer has a great preview in the latest issue, really shows the potential of the game. The fluidity of movement, in particular, coupled with superhuman abilities is going to be the shit.

I wonder what they called the prototype for Prototype? I also wonder if they had it unnamed and just kept referring to it as "the prototype" and it stuck.

Does sound pretty sweet though.

I'm pretty sure it has to do with what you are in the game.

isnt this basically infamous -_-

I know a lot more about Prototype than I do about inFamous, so I really wouldn't know. But based on the information available, isn't infamous somewhat like Fable? Prototype seems more than anything like a spiritual successor to Hulk Ultimate Destruction, albeit on a vastly different scale.

yeah i thought infamous was gonna be like fable but this sounds like it

This one gives you the choice of observing or taking active parts in conflicts, but I don't think there is a genuine choice of being a hero or villain here. Mercer is described as quite the monstrous entity. I wish the GI information was made public already, because it's hard to present this in nutshell form.

One of the core designs is the weaponization idea, and then specifically weaponizing yourself with abilities and features "learned" from characters and creatures you absorb. The magazine shows one of the abilities called groundspike, which allows Mercer to send a biomass into the ground which causes massive spikes to rip up from the ground and impale characters/enemies many feet away from the character. The other ability shown involves mutated arms that are capable of ripping enemies apart (complete with appropriate levels of gore).

Detailed in the mag is also one of the "learning" sequences. Mercer enters an attack helicopter in the air, kills the gunner by throwing him out of his seat and proceeds to kill and absorb the pilot, learning the skill of piloting the helicopter in the process.

Mercer can also assume the forms of characters he encounter. One instance describes Mercer absorbing a military officer, and using said form to manipulate the military forces to his gain.

Mercer can also cover entire city blocks in mere seconds, and wall run and leap between skyscrapers.

Sounds ****ing awesome, to say the least.

:o sounds awesome. Assuming the shapeshifting abilities aren't just gimmicks (doesn't sound like it), this could be delightfully different from most games out there.

I've seen it in action, it does look real cool.
They are planning it for a 90%, GOTY-contender.

It's like a cross between Assassin's and Ultimate Destruction and a tiny bit of Omikron

What's the deal with posting scans on this forum?

If I cut out the pics from the preview, would that be OK or will that get me banned?

I think you can only post scans from non-english magazines. So posting GI scans is bannable.

If it's an american publication you get banned, everything else seems to be fair game

Atleast I think how it still works

OK, so what if I cut the pictures from the scans & only post them, is that allowed or will I face the ban hammer?

Edit this post and pretend scans come from a non-English mag.
Hide the captions tho. :P

It's a Superhero gone bad sandbox game isn't it?

Yeah, but beyond that. People were shouting "Crackdown clone" right after it was shown, which seemed real ****ing odd considering that 1. we don't actually have much info on it, 2. it doesn't look anything like Crackdown, and 3. Crackdown didn't start the "genre".

Whatever though, this thread isn't about infamous so I guess I'll just shut up about it.

One of the coolest images in the GI article shows a passenger airliner in the sky, far above the skyscraper in the background. That type of attention to atmospheric detail is very, very cool. Assuming of course that it's only an atmospheric detail.

edit: dude, if you're concerned about getting banned you probably shouldn't be posting those. Just a friendly word of advice.

I tried to make sure that none of the text was visible in the pics, but I think you're right. (I'll take them down).

Pics aren't doing much for me due to the size/quality, but I really love the free roaming genre so it's sometihng to keep an eye on atleast

The pictures make a lot more sense in the context of the article. And it really does sound like they are taking the whole idea of free roaming to an entirely new level.

I'd love to see a good 'spy' game, so if the spy mechanics in this are great, I'm hyped.

P.S. - can we avoid Digg and N4G links in the forum, since they're virtually always links elsewhere? Posters could link to the original source instead. Actually this applies to game blogs as well, most (but not all) of their content also has links to an original source.

Forgot to mention, there are a few video interviews with Radical staff members available in the Unlimited section of gameinformer.com. No gameplay footage, but it's pretty interesting nonetheless.

Sounds cool.

Reminds me of when you take over people in Destroy All Humans 2. Take over a body, and start talking to others as if you were them. That was awesome.

I hope those screens are actually indicative of actual gameplay (as far as the visual fidelity we'll actually be getting). I won't be fooled!

There's a lot of NPCs in shot 3, I'm hoping for a busy game full of carnage:D
It looks strange, the two parked yellow cabs look copy-pasted (pedestrian at the exact same place).
