PS blog: What’s next for Driveclub?

I think the fact that they are still working on the game and adding new features is indicative of Sony's plans for the studio. I can't see them working on a new title any time soon and will just continuously improve this game and hope to earn some money on it. Maybe even going free to play some time in the future.

That's exactly what they're doing:

Sony said:
Evolution Studios will now focus on DriveClub as a service going forward...

I hope the introduce Antigua as a new local, per the rumors prior to release. Caribbean island driving would be clutch.
I did some research and it sounds like Evolution mentioned Antigua at one of their early events. That would be a fantastic location.

All of the work being put into this game, makes me wonder if it's being prepped for an eventual morpheus release, you put Driveclub: Morpheus Edition in the box with the headset, you've got a fully featured game with tons of content on day one.

Lots of additional content =/= optimisation for VR.

So,

"Fully customisable multiplayer lobbies, new difficulty options, more tracks, community events, extra photomode options, fine-tuning for drift mode, smarter notifications and many more developments are all incoming."

is not actual content?

I don't know what it is about Driveclub threads that make people post such dumb comments. The content is clearly written in the article.

Umm the article says new tracks.

There was a time when not reading the OP was a bannable offence. Never make me a mod, I'd ban errybody for that. That combination of laziness + whininess drives me nuts.

Well on the one hand Evolution Studios does have Morpheus devkits. On the other hand they would have to make a very different version in order to run at a minimum of 60fps.

Project Morpheus is a fantastic piece of hardware and it’s something that really excites me as a gamer. Evolution has a dedicated team who have been working on it from day one, so we have a keen eye on it – but it’s not something we’re looking at for Driveclub just now.

Game would have to be paired back to hit at least 60fps. Not saying it wont happen just that at least visually, it will be a different game.

I have barely played this game, due to lack of two player split screen. Lack of focus on quality local multiplayer is a huge mistake in the industry today. When you grow up, you want to play with those around you, not some unknown on the other side of the world. It's laughable that I have to say to a friend "hey, why don't you go home, so we can play a game of *insert game title here*!".

It's completely baffling, all this talk about social gaming, and then gaming is getting less and less social by the minute.

Local multiplayer was always going to start disappearing with the advent of faster internet speed and increased bandwidth becoming ubiquitous.
Most games suffer in terms of visuals once they go split screen even if (as is the case with Rocket League) it's just because it's harder to see what's going on in a smaller window.

The last time I played Rocket League online with a friend we we're chatting in a party so it's not really that much less social.
Driveclub was designed to be a graphical showcase it presumably couldn't do split screen without significant compromise.

I'm not one of those "ps4 too weak for VR" people but I really can't see DC working in VR. They'd have to so drastically change the graphics it seems like a lower budget ground-up project (or a PS3 VR remaster) would make way more sense. It certainly wouldn't have the beloved DC visuals since it'd have to go up to 60FPS and probably make some extra concessions on top of that.

I wouldn't be surprised if DriveClub 2 is an open world racer.

You heard it here first folks!

It'd have to be a spinoff, open world is totally not "driveclub 2"

Yup, and when I want to have a beer with my friends, I just call them on the phone instead of actually meeting them. Less to clean up afterwards as well :P.

And if I REALLY want to party, I use Skype.

Does this game has THE best post launch support ever? Because damn, every week looks like they are announcing some big stuff.

No not even close, but it is good and they should be commended for it. I do hope they'll be able to move on to something different soon though.

Pretty sure they'd have to sacrifice a lot of visual fidelity to achieve split screen.

What do I want in Season Pass 2?

Extra tracks for all existing countries.

New locations: including Australia, USA, Italy.

Group B rally cars.

More cars in lesser represented groups like hatchbacks

Some classic cars: including Testarossa, Countach, EB110, XJ220, NSX, Supra etc, Escort Cosworth.

More control over weather conditions and % of chance of rain.

Some more circuits (? Maybe Le Mans 24 or similar too) so we can compete in a racing season if we want

I want to see more tracks. Not more variations of current tracks. New tracks. This is a brilliant game but the current tracks are starting to get a little stale for me.

I don't see the issue here? That's a sacrifice I'm sure 99% of those who play split-screen games will happily make. I played Lotus 2 and 3 on the Amiga a lot in split-screen, and it both looked and ran worse than the single-player full screen.

There's no excuse for not including a split-screen mode in an arcade racing game, imo. Heck, even Gran Turismo has it, and that's one of the most visual fidility heavy racing games ever!

As someone who couldn't care less about Driveclub, but would love to see a Motorstorm sequel or even better: a Wipeout game, can you please forget about Driveclub?

As someone that love Motorstorm, but like what they're doing with Driveclub, if they want to develop Motorstorm adding things to a already developed game will not take away too many resources to start Motorstorm. Motorstorm had many sequels, if the demand is there it will be made if Evolution wants to do it or not.

Speaking of tracks, what specifically do you guys want to see?

I'd love something set along the Pacific Coast highway in the USA

They didn't share much tbh. I hope for some major additions (season 2 plz :)), not small updates for another 12 months.

what a shitty article. the title should just read "Thanks for playing Driveclub"

Or it could read "We are going to support Driveclub with a lot of new content for a long time to come". You should check your attitude.

On a side note, I'm not much of a trophy hunter, but I've really enjoyed moving up toward the plat in this game. Thinking of getting the seasons pass now.

Driveclub+Morpheus?

As someone who enjoyed Driveclub a huge amount, I think it has plenty of content and I'm not sure stringing it out for another 12 months with extra courses and cars and tweaks to drifting is that enticing. I too would much prefer a new motorstorm. Or if Sony is feeling risk-averse, pop out a motorstorm HD trilogy (with 3D + morpheus support) for a relatively low cost and feel out whether the market justifies a new entry.

I'd like to at least see a '3D Rift' release like they did with Pacific Rift, adding in stereo 3D support with a limited number of tracks to race on. So eg no rain, hand picked tracks that are less demanding or can be reduced in detail without too much impact, fewer cars on track.

it is quite a lot less social if your friend is at your house. You have to send him away back to his house to play together.

I'm in the firm belief that Driveclub can have an adapted mode for Virtual Reality.

When they added Dynamic Weather, to the existing tracks with 12+ cars at any given time and the FPS still didn't budge from an almost completely flawless 30FPS, they are surely running at a much higher frame-rate if it was uncapped.

(Conjecture) They have to be using some good streaming technology, using good LOD's with adaptive tessellation of some sort to help optimise the amount of polys onscreen and something else, because it is a solid presentation at 1080p30 with incredible visuals including the inclusion of dynamic weather and all the cars on track with the amount of light sources they use and reflections with some decent AA; it's really impressive.

That's why I think if they wanted to get to 1080p60 for VR, I think it's achievable within Driveclub. If they're rendering for VR in Cockpit, that alone can reduce polycount given they won't have to render the outer vehicle in as much detail on the rear of the car so that could save some GPU resources. Reduce the car total to say 12 maybe or 8 cars on track, lower the amount of particles for the rain and reduce the amount of shadowss cast from the headlights, and lowering the resolution of the reflections, since it'd be less visible with VR mode on and I think that could be somewhere in the ballpark to getting close to, if not hitting 60FPS. It still will be required to have some track-based optimisations too, perhaps lower the tree and foliage density on some tracks, I know one track has something like 1 million trees, which is something impressive, so lowering that will help the resource budget.

Driveclub: VR Edition would be a good in-the-box inclusion for a Project Morpheus bundle, along with No Man's Sky for example. Sony have said they've finished Morpheus hardware, they're just waiting on the games.

After trying the PS+ Edition of DriveClub, I'm a believer.
The game is fucking boss and the online is simply one of the greatest (was always like this?).

My only problem is 30fps. But I guess GT7 will come soon enough to scratch that itch.

Are you sure? I find the online community toxic, everyone just ramming people off the track.
