PS Eye = Kinect ?

You have an IR time of flight depth mapping solution versus a dual RGB depth mapping solution. We have seen what the depth map that Kinect 2 provides looks like, we have not seen what the Eye depth map looks like. There are more things than resolution and refresh rate at play here.

show me a video of how the ps4eye see the body....

SoftKinetic DS325 vs. Kinect Video.

The PS4 camera uses the same middelware as the DS325.

yes u need a fantastic precise body recognition to do this...man......ULTRA PRECISE...(the old pseye could do the same)

ps. why the feet become enormous?

If a $5 camera can offer all the benefits of motion controlled gaming we've ever been shown - what is the benefit to Kinect 2?

If you go to Amazon.com & try to buy a webcam with similar features to the PS4 Eye Camera, It's definitely gonna cost over $100. The Kinect2 is an expensive, overdesigned device for the core features that MS is promoting with the Xbox1.

Again, it's not overdesigned, it's designed to work in all sorts of lighting conditions. A RGB camera would be essentially useless at 1:15 in this video:

The depth map will depend entirely on the sensor hardware. One look at a depth map from one piece of hardware != the depth map from another piece of hardware. The software is nice, but it all depends on the data it is working with.

This is their middleware engine, and the engine that's being used for PS4's depth tracking so there's little reason to believe it should differ from the example shown here, other then the fact that this video is from a pretty old build.

just stop selling the ps4eye for something that isnt...it wont be a kinect ...it wanna be a psmove + (and maybe is better for it)

I'm NOT comparing the PS4 Eye Camera to the Kinect2, I'm comparing it to the Kinect1. It was NEVER designed to match Kinect2. They were trying to do an HD/60fps version of Kinect1.

I think you're setting up for dissapointment if you expect the same functionality from PS Eye. It's a very different device. Great cameras, but the depth sensors on both kinects require significantly less image processing to get an accurate skeleton, and can do it in the dark or harsh lightings. There are also a bunch of discrete audio processors in the Xbox for the Kinect mic array.

PS Eye will offer a different experience, play to its strengths. Kinect 1 equivalent voice and motion (maybe). Quick response for object tracking in normal light.

Show me a game that Kinect can do but not the PS4 eye. Seriously.

just go to watch a tech demostration of the kinect2 you will see millions of applications of stuff that the ps4eye couldnt do..or do so bad

after watch the ps4eye demostration in the playroom...........................dots

(seriously i dont think there are games up fo rth ekinect 2 O.o)

It would absolutely be the same, if the stereo vision depth map that the PSEye provides is as good as their time of flight camera they use for their demonstrations. Which it very well may be, I would just like to see it.

agree :) and i think the specs are between the k1..and the k2 (but i think that the software isnt pushing body recognition) im seeing lots of improvements in what the ps move was....can u agree?

Xbox will have kinect exclusive games, I doubt PS4 will have eye exclusives apart from Playroom and maybe that MM game.

The comparisons are pretty pointless at this rate, lets wait till Just Dance 4 comes out or whatever multiplatform tracking games are out and then compare.

Kinect 2 can be used and easily detect you in pitch black. With the PS camera you need some kind of adequate lighting. No comparison there.

It's still technically different to what Kinect1 is, obviously Sony developed it as a similar solution but you can't tell it does everything that Kinect 1 does but better.

3D stereo reconstruction is not some 'theory' - it's a real thing.

Kinect's depth map is a reconstruction too, but a different kind.

The depth map in kinect1 is a reconstruction, since it's using the same geometry as stereovision. But time of flight is closer to a direct measurement of depth, instead of reconstruction.
But in the end it's still depth. For the fine details, I wonder if the measurement accuracy is very sensitive to distance. With stereovision (or kinect1), you quickly lose depth accuracy the further you are from the sensor. I'm not sure it's true for time of flight, as long as you're close enough to detect the signal.

Here's a video that shows images created using a similar Dual-cam setup as the PS4 Eye Camera:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pydla1fPfBw

It also has a dedicated FPGA for the depth map estimation. I don't think the PS4 has one.
You can also notice how the depth map is full of "holes" (all the black parts of the image have unknown depth). Stereovision is better on points and contours, that can be matched in two different images, than on even surfaces.

And that is where GPGPU comes in, shocking i know.

You seriously think that Sony will only putbout two exclusive PS4 Camera based games? I'm starting to lose faith that Xbox loyalist are capable of objective reasoning.

Is there any PS4 Eye review yet? One where reviewer tries to find out how it works in various lighting conditions, distances, cluttered rooms etc?
