PS Vita - Now vs. 1 year ago - Has Sony turned it around?

Strive how? as a companion device to the PS4? That's just a polite way of calling the thing dead.

It's going to be more than a glorified PS4 controller. The Vita will be successful in the end and it will be a worthy competitor to the 3DS. Don't be so quick to judge it because all it's been getting lately is indie trash & vn dating sims

Are you really serious with these statements you're making?

Quick to judge? It's been for over 18 months.

In terms of sales? No.

As a device that people in a niche market will want to buy and enjoy it when they do? Absolutely yes.

The Vita will never, ever be a mass market sales success, but as a hardcore gaming device for the hardcore gaming market it's a great little machine.

Yep this sums it up rather nicely

PS Vita will find its niche, especially as a streaming device, and will eventually find its way into my house
dat PS+ backlog
.

it will never come within even sniffing distance of its rivals, though.

I am being serious. The PS Vita is a wonderful handheld that is seriously being overlooked because it doesn't have MoHu or Pokemon and because it's made by Sony.

With the PS Vita you have access to a majority of the mainline Final Fantasy games, Metal Gear Solid 1 - 3/PW, & great library of PSP and PS1 games in your pocket.

You're missing the part where this stuff has been true since launch and nobody cares.

PSP, by Sony, did pretty well without Pokémon and much better than Vita even before MH existed.

This, all of it, literally doesn't matter. It's clear that no one buys new hardware for software that is available on older hardware.

So what exactly is going to happen to make it successful now if that is already possible and it's still tanking?

What is considered to be "turned around"? Shouldn't it be considered a success if it is making Sony money, games continue to be made for it, and it makes those devs money? It doesn't need to be a mass market device to be a success. Of course, I don't know if it is indeed making Sony and those devs any money.

Either way, I am enjoying my Vita and look forward to the games coming out for it, although I do wish more AAA games were coming out for it.

Interesting answers all, thanks.

Personally I think the list of Vita compatible devices will grow over the next year or two and Vita TV is just the start. Eventually I can see Vita TV being built into TVs and possibly bluray players. Further expansion of Vita into phones and tablets is inevitable IMO. In the end we'll have an entire Vita family of devices and I'm hoping the sheer numbers of people out there with Vita compatible devices will give more and more developers a reason to make games for Vita OS.

I don't think Sony has completely turned things around just yet, but they're laying the groundwork for that turnaround.

It's still in the shitter, but I love it. I really hope that Sony gives it the support that it gave to PSP, and dusts of old IPs for some portable iterations. Daxter, J&D The Lost Frontier, R&C Size Matters, Resistance Retribution, those Syphon Filter games, SOCOM, etc. were all fun. And PSP got some big IPs like GT and GOW.

KZ Mercenary is fucking awesome. I can't put it down. I am praying that this thing sees a proper SOCOM. I'd bring it to work with me.

Not my fault that a lot of people are too blind to see the true potential of the Vita.

No, but the fact that the things you've listed have all been around for quite a while and have failed to make the Vita successful is a pretty solid indicator that you can't use them as reasons the Vita will be a success.

So... it's going to be a success, because everyone is too stupid to see how successful it should be because it can play Final Fantasy VII? This is basically what you're saying?

Or are you saying that it'll be successful because you really, really want it to be?

In terms of sales, it's the same or worse. In terms of content I think it's getting a little better.

Disagree. It isn't the JRPG powerhouse the first PSP was. So no, in terms of content it hasn't gotten better.

It's nice that it's become a niche handheld fighter "console," however. More fighters need to make the jump over to it. But in so far as actual support that isn't "indie?" No, the situation hasn't really changed from the dire status it's been in.

Are you implying its fighter library touches PSP's? PSP will probably forever be the handheld with the absolute best fighting game library.

I'm sure you couldn't.

Couldn't resist.

:p

But it can play PSP games, so it touches and exceeds it. We are all just too blind to see its greatness.

It's missing Namco fighters, Skullgirls, and Street 4.

Yes, you can get Alpha 3, Namco Fighters, and a port of Darkstalkers for PSP to play on the system. But given how the system blows up PSP resolutions to horribad non-native resolutions (something that's a sticking point with me), that's kinda moot.

We need more ports at Native Resolution so my eyes don't have tears of blood coming out of them from the horrible resolutions of PSP games.

(Or Yosp should finally hear my bitching and allow me to shrink the damn blowup. FFS, the PSX emulator allows this. Why can't the PSP's?)

Being able to stream PS4 games anywhere is a huge selling point. I just bought one because it apparently works flawlessly.

and the price drop ;)

I think people miss the point with the Vita, given it's technical specs, there's no reason to change anything (except form factor), for the duration of the PS4's life. That being the case, the system will build a huge userbase and games library, by virtue of being on the market for such a long time, and an ever lower cost of entry.

Sure, in that time, mobile devices will become ever more powerful, but we also know, such power will go to waste with mobile screens, while touch controls are even more of a hindrance to mobile gaming.

I think what hurts the Vita is that Sony doesn't even take it serious. They treat it as an also ran side project and that's a shame.

I don't think sony has turned it around at all. the only reason I still own my vita is to see how remote play works for me, I don't trust Sony's demonstration at TGS or what they say. as if they'd ever say anything negative about their product. Content wise the vita doesn't really have much going for now that Killzone is out. theres Tearaway and then what? the recently announced Gravity Rush 2(which was announced like sony didn't even care)? Vita has been diminished to a indie port machine, I didn't spend $250 to play over priced indie ports. :/

note: I don't think indies are bad, its just sony flaunts them around as if its new shit when most of them are like year old ports. I bought my Vita for console gaming on the go(killzone, soul sacrifice, lbp vita, gravity rush, etc.) not to play old indie games

This time around last year it was selling 6k units a week in Japan. Last week it sold 6k units in Japan.

Has Sony even posted numbers of PSV hardware sales in the last few quarters? Last solid figure I heard was 2.2 million but that was a loooooong time ago.

I don't think that it's a product that can ever be turned around, it's best chance will be a shot at stronger sales in Japan, but it will always be a niche device in other markets.

It's a great handheld that was created without looking at who would buy it (similar problem to wiiu).

It's still great. And there's still very little reason for anyone but a niche fan to buy it

They may not have turned it around for the general public, but for me personally, I've very excited to get a Vita now. I plan on getting it a little after the PS4 launch, and to have it both for the cool stuff ahead and already out (which may be few and far between, but those few look great), and for remote play.

I bought Vita day one and it hasn't really lived up to the hype for me. I love Sony first party and mainly got it to be a Wipeout machine, but haven't really bought a game in months. Almost a year if you count retail. I don't care much for the indies that have been out on the Vita, nor do I care for Sony's so-so first party support. It still pales in comparison to the kind of support Nintendo throws at the 3DS.

Vita should have been a PSP 2 but instead we got a misguided mess that is half-baked.

Well if you don't buy games for it - it's not very good.

Killzone is goddamn amazing.

Sales of the system may get better but it will be niche. It's never going to be selling on average 100k (which isn't that much) a month in the US and Japan.

Remote play and Vita TV are nice features but they are not going to make the masses go and get one.

It just doesn't have the software titles which will turn things around in a major way.

When it launched I remember people saying word of mouth will see people get it. Once people get in there hands they will buy it etc etc.

This never happened!!

They've made good strides and the indie support is definitely a nice addition. But still seems Sony is lacking in the game department. We had what 3 major titles from there this year? Not to mention they need to still do more about grabbing 3rd party titles or localizing stuff still stuck in Japan.

Monster Hunter 4 is 3DS exclusive, so I'm going to go with "no" on Sony turning the Vita situation around. From what I've read, Monster Hunter is what turned things around for the PSP. That would've been the kind of hit that the Vita would've needed to make a comeback.

In Japan, anyway.

Man, this thread is bumming me out.

I had to choose between the 3DS and the Vita about a year ago and went with the 3DS to play Fire Emblem. I don't regret my purchase and have been waiting until this Christmas to pick up a Vita.

With the new 2000 series coming out, I'm probably going to scoop up a 1000 series before they disappear, but the doom-and-gloom here is making me doubt my decision. I mean, what if nothing else good comes out for it? We've got a few future titles I'm looking forward to like FFX/X-2, Deception IV, and God Eater II, but only one of those is an exclusive. A lot of people are talking Tearaway so I'll have to check that out. New Soul Sacrifice footage looks pretty good and Toukiden is selling well...

The remote play feature sounds great and for the exact same reason Yoshida mentioned at TGS - we're a one TV household and my wife is always coming in to watch TV right when I settle down so this is potentially pretty big for me.

I bought one recently. I feel they have turned it around with regards to the game library. There are enough games on it that I want to play now.

As far as sales and public perception that all seems the same.

Vita has many system sellers coming up in Japan. Let's wait and see how those boost the Vita first.

They are?

Japan isn't the only place it exists. How they addressing the shocking sales in the West?

If remote play with PS4 is the best solution they have then might as well call it day now.
