PS2/PS3 Controller Adapters

I just got my pelican adapters

GH1 works perfectly, HOPOs and Starpower work the way they should.

GH2 well you guys have already seen what you have to do to get it to "work" no HOPO's and you may as well forget about keeping star power and a chain at the same time.

I didn't notice any lag on either GH1 or 2
gah... wish i had read this before ordering. i thought that's what the gh2 buttons were for...

Here's a good review for the pelican adapter when using it on Guitar Hero II

The whole point of backward compatibility for most PS3 owners is being able to get rid of that PS2 in the old entertainment center. Yet many PS3 owners have had to keep their PS2 units hooked up for a few reasons, namely:

1. Support for our old memory card saves.
2. Support for rumbling controllers.
3. Support for the Guitar Hero controller.

The first problem is solved by an official Sony adapter which you can buy for $15, use once, and then throw away, we suppose. The second problem is solved by the recent firmware update 1.7, which added rumble support for old controllers hooked up via any number of USB to PlayStation controller adapters. Yet the third and most important problem remained -- if you want to play Guitar Hero, you need to keep a PS2 handy. Pelican's new controller adapter promises to fix this final problem, but the execution is less than perfect.

The major innovation Pelican's adapter has over others out there is an integrated PS button on the converter itself. This means users can bypass the annoying "hit the PS button," message on PS2 games by doing just that, no matter what kind of special controller might be inserted. The PS button functionality also allows users to assign the PS2 controller to any controller slot -- a must for multiplayer games. So far so good.

The unit advertises Guitar Hero support in big letters on the packaging, so we switched the unit over to its marked Guitar Hero 2 mode for a test. We were already prepared for a less than perfect experience -- as the unit's instructions explain, GH2's hammer ons/offs simply don't work with the adapter, a major blow for expert strummers. What's more, the on-screen colored gems don't light up when you push in the frets, removing an important visual cue for finger placement. The loss of these important features made playing on the PS3 significantly tougher than playing on the PS2. Still, the fact that we were playing Guitar Hero on the PS3 at all was something to get excited about.

Further testing on other games revealed a surprising omission: the Pelican adapter does not support force feedback. This is a bit shocking, considering numerous online reports confirm that older USB/PlayStation controller adapters support the rumble functionality just fine. While the Pelican adapter provided responsive, lag-free input from our old DualShocks, the lack of rumble made us wonder why we weren't just using a Sixaxis. Less surprisingly, special controllers for games like Taiko: Drum Master and BeatMania didn't work with the Pelican adapter, though all the DDR mats we tried worked perfectly.

While it's far from perfect, Pelican's PS2 to PS3 controller adapter remains, for now, the only way to play Guitar Hero on a PS3. When combined with another USB converter for rumble support and a memory card adapter for old saves, you just might be able to get rid of that PS2 for good. And really, isn't that the dream of every PS3 owner?

I ordered one yesterday, it might be a price mistake so I hope they don't cancel it.

It looks like they fixed the price. Right before I was about to order one. Did they cancel your orders?

I guess that's good news...

I'm still going to wait for the final solution.

How depressing. GH1 works perfectly but GH2 (and most likely GH2 80s) works like crap.

The ONE PS2 game that doesn't work on a PS3 is the one that I play the most :/

where did you buy that? is it any good?

Ebay. Quality is average at best, but it's essentially the 360 controller on the PS3 so I can't complain.

Everything worked well, but the cord itself shorted and now they told me pay 'em $13 for a replacement so eh.

Yeah, I got my Pelican adapters today and tested GH1 on it. Works great. GH2 I don't have.

I also found out after playing a bit of GoWII that it doesn't support rumble. Then I read the ******* review and got that confirmed. Disappointing, but I'll get over it.

Dammit! I thought the Pelican adapter was the one to get? No rumble? Motherf*cker!

I think the reason the Pelican adapter doesn't have rumble is because the ps3 thinks an actual ps3 controller is plugged in. Once Sony finally implements rumble for ps3 games and releases a controller with rumble then the Pelican adapter might receive the signal for rumble. /speculation

How exactly can the adapter do that? Can the adapter receive firmware updates or something?

If rumble support for PS3 controllers is added in a future firmware update and the Pelican adapter makes PS2 controllers show up as PS3 controllers then naturally the Pelican will then support rumble.

Ah, that makes sense then. So you're saying the Pelican adapter sees all PS2 controllers as PS3 controllers or is that just speculation?

No, ShaunLEGEND did. :p I just reiterated what he was getting at.

I myself have some cheapo adapter I got off eBay and it works and has rumble support.

So I gotta chuck the Elecom ones away, and buy the Pelican ones? Grrr...

Keep the Elecoms around for traditional DualShock games like the Metal Gear series. You will thank me later.

I ordered 2 of these last week :

http://www.divineo.com/cgi-bin/div-us/zz-p3-contadap

will let you guys know how they work (im going to be testing out my x-arcade sticks with them mostly)

quoting myself here.

So i got my two adapters.

I like them but dont. Heres why.

I have one of those ps2 street fighter controllers that doesnt have analog, the buttons work when on the adapter, but the d-pad is not recognized at all,and since theres no button on the adapter to switch modes, its useless.

Yet somehow,my x-arcade sticks work like a charm, but i ****ing suck with them somehow!
Im not sure if theres a delay or if theyr TOO sensitive , but i seem to have less trouble doing circle grabs (i.e full circle then grab) and more trouble doing timed combos in vf5.
Im not sure what to make of it,if its just me and i need to get used to my sticks again,or if its the adapters causing some kind of strange ms delay thats ****in with me.

Anyone know a way to find out if youre getting a delay or not?? its kind of hard to tell.

I got the Pelican one in yesterday and had a 5 hour session of VF5 with a friend where I used my PS2 RAP2 instead of the PS3 FS3 I'd been using for the last hundred hours+

...it was like a whole new game. I could pull off the df/df+p uppercut with Akira consistently now, my SPoDs were more deadly, and I'm using the D+P+K+G, F+P+K+G guard breaks now since I can hit them 100% of the time whereas with the FS3 sometimes it wouldn't register all 3 and perform something else.

No noticable lag. Very much worth the $15 and now I have my RAP2 for all future PS3 fighters :D

Let us thank you now... Explain.

so, the Pelican ps2 to ps3 converter work GREAT with HRAP2????

Warning!!

Didn't see it mentioned but the Pelican adapter apparently does not work with some of the SF Anniversary Sticks that they released and many people modded. I have one of these and bought the adapter so I could play some Tekken and Alpha Anthology with it and was sorely disappointed that the SF stick did not work at all with it. I am using a SF Anniversary pad fine with it so it was not a total waste, but I'm still disappointed about the stick.

Apparently the problem is in the stick itself, not the adapter, but it works fine on both PS2 and XBox, but will not work with the adapter, so ...

Does anyone know if the pelican adapter ever started supporting rumble with new PS3 firmware releases? I don't care about the Guitar Hero stuff, I just want my rumble without buying an import sixaxis.

What about other adapters? Do any of them support rumble in PS3 games after FW 2.01?

There are a number of other adapters that support rumble. I've heard the ones you can find at Radio Shack support rumble.

But if you really want rumble that bad, I suggest just waiting on the Dual Shock 3.

I'm still waiting for my import DS3! However, I've got a bunch of DualShock controllers (both from PS1 and PS2) that would work fine with multiplayer games and I was wondering if I could take advantage of the rumble with these converters.

The only reason the Pelican doesn't support rumble is because it was made to specifically simulate PS3 controls (meaning no rumble back then).

I think buying any usb-PS2 controller adapter will work fine now (w/ rumble and non-analog control to boot) thanks to firmware revisions. Just don't buy those that simulate said PS3 controller.

Do any of these work flawlessly with the PS2 SF Anniversary Arcade Sticks? I'm just curious because I want to pick one up only if it does.

I would suggest PMing MarkMan, he would probably know more about that.

EDIT: Never mind.

What's the best adapter for DDR? The one I have (Radio Shack, brand unknown) doesn't handle jumps at all.

The Pelican one was supposed to, but is out of stock everywhere (and going for a lot on ebay!)

Pelican, but as you said, out of stock.

anybody tried the beatmania controller on the ps3?

been meaning to buy an adaptor for quite some time, I'm but not sure which one to get (or if it that matters)
