PS2/PS3 USB Converter that WORKS with PS2 games!

MarkMan

loves Arcade Sticks
Pelican will be releasing a convertor sometimes after April that will allow you to play PS2/PS1 controllers/arcade sticks on PS3 games AND PS2 games.

That is still quite some time from now...

BUT... I came across another convertor that a friend sent me. I received them today and they work remarkably on PS3 games with NO input lag like the Elecom convertors. I tested it with Virtua Fighter 5 and Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection. Here is a little write up I put on my site www.SDTEKKEN.com :

The PS2/PS3 Converter is a USB convertor that enables both digital and analog enabled controllers/arcade sticks to be used on the PLAYSTATION 3 console. Upon testing, this converter is the best one on the market in terms of lag. There were no signs of lag for this converter in both Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection and Virtua Fighter 5.

This was tested in VF5 by enabling autofire on a Hori Real Arcade Pro and referencing the frame counter. Using an Elecom JC-PS201UV converter and an HRAP1 to perform Akira’s P+K+G repeatedly yielded anywhere between 1-4 frames window(usually 3 or 4) of free space between successive P+K+Gs. When using the PS2/PS3 Converter the frame window dropped drastically to either 1 or 2 frames between P+K+Gs.

When testing with single button inputs using the Fighting Stick 3 and the PS2/PS3 Converter the advantage also went to the PS2/PS3 Converter. The Fighting Stick 3 inputting Akira’s P over and over on autofire yielded a frame window in between Ps between 1 and 3 frames, with 3 frames showing up often. When using the PS2/PS3 Converter the window was at a solid 1-2 frames with 1 being the dominant number. Both the Fighting Stick 3 and HRAP1 have the same speed setting for their autofire.

What is even more interesting about this converter is the fact that it allows you to play PlayStation 2 games on the PLAYSTATION 3 console! This is amazing as it is the ONLY converter/product at this time that allows you to play PS2 games on your PS3 without using a SIXAXIS controller. Although we experienced minor lag while playing PS2 fighting games and using the converter, overall it was very responsive.

Unfortunately it is unknown where you can easily purchase this type of converter. There is no brand name and the company that makes these are unknown. Hopefully we will be able to find out more in the near future. Keep checking back! (March 19, 2007).

So what I was wondering here... with the wonderful Ninjas of NeoGAF help me find out more about these convertors, availability, and WHO MAKES THIS SHIT!?

My friend bought them in Saudi Arabia... they say they are made in China. There are NO logos/brand names on the packaging.

But I do know, they are the best convertors out right now.

MarkMan take some pretty pictures of the converter itself if you can, it should help people hopefully find one for sale online.

I want it for my arcade sticks, nothing more. So no lag, but is it compatible? I may wait for the Pelican, may be cheaper than shipping this one and all...

I tested it with all my arcade sticks... they work... here are some additional pictures:

Sorry, camera phone.

Excellent news.
I've just picked up a Saturn Virtua Stick Pro (the big daddy Astro City dual version). While, not ideal, I'll try running it through a Saturn to PS2 converter and then one of these.

:lol People begging for GH/GH2 to work with ps3, when it finally does...no reply.

tough crowd. :P

Cuz PS3 is doomed! No one cares any more. Every PS3 owner jumped off the cliff already.

Where'd your friend get it MarkMan? It's kind of hard to get excited about it when there's so little information on it. On the other hand, if Pelican's adapter will work too that's probably what I'll be waiting for.

This is good news, but where can we buy it?

Now someone needs to make a damn IR/USB peripheral so I can use a Haromny Remote on the PS3.

I'm a bit worried about the lag on PS2 games. GH with lag sounds worrying.

I'd probably pick up one of these nevertheless, if someone knew where to buy it from :)

Guitar Hero works? Awesome! My friend's been disappointed that he couldn't play it on his PS3, so I'll have to let him know about this. Thanks.

Did you play a round, or just work the front end? Because I'd heard that one of the converters treats the guitar as a normal pad, which breaks the whole strum mechanic.

I was thinking of buying two for Tekken DR since the old pads are definatly better then the new SixAxis ones.

Before buying one i though i better check out some reviews and thought to search on NeoGAF.

I was thinking of buying venom ones (link below) but I didn't find any reviews yet. I would rather wait for the Palikan converters, Lag Free would be awesome.

If anyone tried venom converters, a review would be much appreciated.
Btw... great post markman

Guitar Hero 2 does have manual lag adjustment built into the game.

Someone on VFDC posted this link saying these have no noticeable lag with vf5 or tk:dr. And they work on ps2 games too (at least SFAC, but not guitar hero)

maybe you canuks will test, eh?

That looks like the one i recently picked up from JB hifi in sydney. It's branded 3rd Earth here locally, but looks identical. It's great little adapter, has a home button on the side, works with BC titles and translates the analog button on old ps2 pads as the home button.

In VF5 it feels perfect, i can't notice any lag what so ever with my old namco arcade sticks. I definitely recommend it, picked it up for $28AU.

The ASiD ones look/sound good, I want to get myself a pair as well... so far I haven't been able to find a website that has them in stock/ships to USA.

I've read up on the official PS forums and it doesn't seem to work with Guitar Hero as the buttons aren't mapped properly.

Well unfortunately guitar hero doesn't work at all on Pal BC, so there is no way i can even test it out. But I can say in VF4 evo the stick works great, no noticeable lag in ps2 BC at all.

MarkMan tell me you have more information on this Converter! Given that Nyko threw in the towel I need a GH fix on the PS3.

Nyko seem to do a pretty well job on their convertor... no news on lag yet:

That converter no longer exists

The ASID converter looks like it will be available here

http://shop4.outpost.com/product/5204647?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

unfortunately from the product description

"
The Asid Tech PS2 to PS3 Controller Adapter allows you to use your PS2 controller on the PS3. Please note: This Adapter is not currently meant to be used with the Guitar Hero controller from Harmonix. Sadly, you'll need to thrash on your PS2 until there's either a firmware update or a new controller is released. Our most sincere apologies, please continue to rock on. More Info"

Any adapter that works with PS2 + PS3 game minus Guitar Hero that is easily obtainable at this point? I can really careless about Guitar Hero at this point. I would like to be able to play VF5 and Tekken using the same stick though.

Yes, I would like to know this as well so I can use my RAP2 for VF5.

There are a few adapters that work for both T5DR and VF5...

http://sdtekken.com/tech-area/converters/

These 3 work...

o Elecom JC-PS201U USB Converter
o Elecom JC-PS202U USB Converter
o ASiD PlayStation 3 Controller Adapter: PS2 to PS3

That's great, but the question was are any of these easily available online with a press of a button to be delivered to your door the next day?

How bad/noticeable is the lag with the Elecom converter? Is it going to be that noticeable if I'm not a hardcore fighting game player?

Also, frys.com seems to have ASiD converter for the US residents... How's the lag in that one?

Its noticeable. I tried to play my copy of HSG4 with mine and the game was unplayable.

I see you (or you guys?) post a new Logic 3 converter on the site. Do you have any more detail on that with regarding to lag, compatibility and where to get one? Thanks!

Just a note, the JCPS101 converters work as well, and are 3 dollars cheaper from that site that you listed in a subsequent post :)

When VF5 came out I tested the 101 with arcade sticks and it did not work.

They do however work with dual shock controllers...

cheers for the info...
please bump this thread when the pelican converters get released...
If these work great (with no lag and are also compatible with guitar heros)... I should buy a pair

I decided to give the ASiD adapter a try since I saw it at Fry's. The slight lag isn't a big deal for playing most of the games. I'm happy to have something that works with my original PS1 Namco stick for VF5. The control feels better and more responsive than the PS3 Hori Fighting Stick 3 even with the lag :lol

As mentioned many times, the adapter doesn't work with GH, the button mappings are wrong.

Also I tried playing HSG5 demo with it using both the stick and my old Logitech wireless controller. Sometimes the input doesn't seem to get registered at all or get "stuck". Hopefuly it's just an isolated issue with HSG5 demo. Other than that, I'm very happy to be able to play my PS2 and PS3 fighting games using the good 'le PS1 Namco Stick.
