PS3 40GB Euro Doggystyle Edition™ OFFICIAL!

Hmm..could 449 be the European price? Was 399 suggested before, or were we crossing wires with the $399 rumour for NA? 399 euros should happen if 399 dollars is happening, but it wouldn't be altogether surprising to me if SCEE figured a €150 drop in the barrier to entry was 'enough'.

I guess we'll see..

Fuck this, I am lost. I will just wait until Sony makes an announcement. :lol

Only thing I'm waiting for is official confirmation of the status of BC in the 40gb. If BC is still there then +1 NA sales for the 40gb and if not then +1 sales for a used 60gb.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Sony piss away whatever loyalty/fortune they had built in Europe. I am one for the big picture but as the months turns to years you have to wonder how much time they'll have to let the state of their European campaign go on in its sad state.

How do you figure?

EU sales have been pretty good considering the outrageous price of the system there.

Wait, what?

They drop the price by 150 Euros within 7 months and somehow Sony is "pissing away whatever loyalty/fortune they had built in Europe."

"No BC" probably means software only BC.
But as far as i know this was always the case with euro ps3's ?

And again, all retailers in italy received confirmation from sony.
It's 399 € and 499 € for starters.

they're just not sure yet about wi fi and card reader.

WTF?! Sony is giving a huge price drop just 6 months after launch to Europe and it's pissing away at them?

You do understand that there is a difference in price for operating in Europe versus for example the US, right? Sony is not the only company to sell hardware at higher cost in Europe compared to the cost of the same hardware elsewhere. And really, immediately following a serious price cut is not the best time to bitch about it.

I am just saying the worse case scenario would not surprise me (which is the mention of the 489 bundle with 40GB and FIFA. Or is everyone saying they are happy with the bundles? I don't know I am in America sitting on cheap prices listening to all the European complain about their crappy bundles.

It's also more of an indictment on why the prices there were so high to begin with, but hey whatever, it's not like it was going to sell anyways given the slow software releases right? :p

but nothing about ps3........

Wait. The 360 with 2 games and 2 controllers is that cheap? What is the normal price for the 360 in Europe?

More like neogaf.com overreacting. Software support is fairly good and only a handful of games aren't supported. It's not the end of the world- and as if you were gonna play them anyway. Bitching for the sake of...

Current 80GB and Euro models aren't pure software support. It's 50/50 hardware/software, as the console drops the Emotion Engine but retains the PS2 GPU, Graphics Synthesizer.

Theoretically, this model could drop the GPU for zero backwards compatibility, which is likely the case if it's going to be a cheaper, stripped-down model.

Still, confirmation from Sony would be nice, and we'll have to wait a little while longer for that.

Ah. I didn't know that. I assumed the emulation was pure software.

it will play DVD's and PS2/PS1 games from PAL region only...

they didn't mention it clearly in their site. i'm just trying to point out some of the info they have there might not be accurate or just too ambigous.

Yes it is. I had this afternoon a paper with that offer on my hand. Good movement by Microsoft Spain, it will attract some people to buy the system.

Normally you found them by 399€ with one game bundled, normally between Gears and a recent game but this offer is awesome (maybe it´s time to start looking for another 360 with a good heatsink?)

Ok, i just had the chance to clarify a couple things.

This 40gb ps3 has:
2 usb ports only
no memcard reader
they're still awaiting confirmation about wi fi, most likely it won't be there.

I assumed software BC would still work, but I didn't know euro ps3 also had a couple ps2 pieces inside so i didn't ask for details; if ps2 emulation is not entirely software based then it's indeed possible BC won't work at all on newer models.

oh, sorry, and the chassis should be the same as the 20gb one

The FCC confirmed the new model has Wi-Fi

Based on the FCC spec, it has wi fi.

From the info available in this thread, just take 80GB model and take out the GS, 2 USB ports, the memory card reader, and replace the 80GB HDD with a 40GB unit.

I can't believe the BC situation ended up shittier than the 360 though. Who would have thunk a year ago....

It's the same product discovered through the FCC, it has Wifi (probably it's considered an important feature because of their plans with PSP and remote play). And 2 USB ports has been already confirmed. I strongly believe that the GS is gone, meaning that the only mistery left about it is if Sony plans to provide a 100% software PS2 BC or they just won't care with this SKU claiming it's just an optional and if you want a PS2...well buy a PS2 or a 80GB PS3.

BC situation is definitely not shittier than the 360's...

Don't really know how you came up with that.

Was that supposed to be a jab at my post? That wouldn't make a ton of sense as the console price for a 360 in euro amounts to a good deal more than the base price for the same system in USD.

Who said this?

Now that I think about it I'm kind of more accepting of the software emulation. It has more possibilities in the future. Since they could added all sorts of special enhancements like we see with pc emulators. Would also be possible for them to implement region free ps1 and ps2 if it's 100% software? Like allowing japanese games to be played and also allow pal using a built in ntsc<->pal conversion in the emulator.

So we should be expecting a blacked out system, without the chrome.....

I was hoping for a different color (silver?) for better differentiation between models...like the 360 does with pro/elite.

Haven't kept up since it was still a rumor at C&VG, so what is the verdict? I see people's last 20 posts and they're talking about a 40GB PS3?

So what's the case? Is there one? When will it be out and what will be the price?

If this 40 GB PS3 unit is truly coming, then I'd like to know what the story is with backward compatibility for PS2 games. If it's being done the same way as the current 80 GB unit, then there's no problem. On the other hand, if it's significantly worse (or removed altogether), then it eliminates one of the most appealing features about the system, that it has a massive library of older games to choose from.

Even though PS1 games will still work, the games for PS1 are not readily available in most stores, so PS1 backward compatibility isn't quite as much of a selling point for prospective buyers as PS2 backward compatibility. The PS2 racks at the stores contain a lot of niche titles, children's games, party games, and casual games that don't have equivalent counterparts on PS3 yet.

You know what is really entertaining; Those who try and find things to make this new SKU less valuable. The PS3 is still the best built, best tech console out there, period.

When did BC become such a big deal all of a sudden? I was always a big proponent of BC but everyone said, 'why do I need BC when I already have the system?'

NOW all of a sudden it's an END OF THE WORLD scenario that will have CATASTROPHIC events if a 40Gb model has no BC. Give me a break. If you want it you get the model that has it (even if it means paying a higher premium).

Having a non BC 40Gb SKU will NOT mean the end of BC as we know it!

Fucking haters or peeps trying to grasp to straws.

Well at least my cousins can finally get one and not sell their ps2, or sell their ps2 since they don't seem to use it anymore only for madden and other ea crap.

Its sad but all I've played this year on my PS3 is PS2 games. Lots and lots of PS2 games. It'll be Ratchet/Uncharted that finally make me use Blu-ray software again.

I want to buy a US PS3 for a low price that can play my US PS2 games. I hope the 40GB has BC.
