I would say it was price first and foremost, then games.

If that means sacrificing BC in order to expand the userbase and lure in more third party developers to make more games, then so be it.

I would just find it odd, after bringing software/hardware emu in the upper 90s%, with all the costs involved, just to scrap it for the 40GB PS3. Wich would also mean to produce two different kinds of motherboards. They should have scrapped it at the 80GB version then.

I edited my post to include price first and foremost.

You are already comparing it to X360s BC, when all indication with Sony's current software emulation efforts (even if it's just 50/50 hw/sw) are far and beyond better than MS's efforts.

I did. You generalized to no end, completely ignored on purpose that there are other skus, assumed based on a rumor. All that just to say that -and I quote-: "I can't believe the BC situation ended up shittier than the 360 though."

I hate to break it to you, but the future of PS3 ain't the SKU that we have now. It's the 40GB SKU. Success of PS3 platform means that the hardware BC SKUs will be in the tiny minority.

So you're assuming that the 40GB will be "the future" and based on the assumption that it won't have BC you declare X360's BC better. Niiiiiiiiice...

But they still have the 80gb sku which has BC..it's not EE-equipped but it's still good.

Derailing? Isn't the status of the BC in the 40GB SKU a vital part of this thread? I didn't make up the rumors nor reported on it. I'm just here to discuss the ramifications.

You guys need to seriously relax. The 40GB isn't even born yet, and none of it's features have even been hinted at. Stop building rumours based on rumours. We'll find out if it has BC or not sooner or later.


Here's my opinion if it doesn't have it. Basically, 98% of the world won't care and it won't affect whether they buy it or not. 99% if I'm right in my assumption that "we" hardcore gamers don't/won't even represent 2% of potential buyers throughout the system's life. When little Johnny buys it, he isn't getting it to re-live FFXII or Cosmic Race. He's buying it to play whatever the latest and greatest PS3 has to offer is. When big Johhny buys it, it's for the same reason, or to show off his brand new HDTV.

Either way, Johnny isn't paying $400 to play PS1 or PS2. Johnny wants PS3!

I agree with most of what you've just said, but I don't think your Johnny would be buying a $400 console. $400 is still aiming at hardcore market.
 
A good price blu ray player, that play PS3 games, and PSN games at the least. People will find reasons to buy it if they were on the fence, or want a blu ray player.

Well little Johnny's parents are buying it for him, and big Johnny is abusing the credit card he was just approved for. :p You get the gist of it, though.

BC has never been what people lined up days for before a console's launch, and I don't think it's the deciding factor for many people.

Worse comes to worse you have the option of paying more for one that has it, or even buying a brand new PS2 to play them on.

And honestly 400$ isn't as huge as it was in 1995. Most people I know would consider 400$ to be cheap considering it is what you get.

he must got that sony credit cardz offer $150 off in everything. That offer expired in sep. though (unless they re-extended the extended offer already).

No, it's an microsoft spin party where you claim that X360's BC is better than PS3's by assumming on the assumptions of the assumptions just to make your argument work. Oh and btw BC is important again!

Hmmmm if this goes for 399 I might want to jump back in. Alternatively I am hopping the 60 GB will drop abit more.

It should have wi fi. The FCC filing listed it. Yes on the other 2.

Seems to be: 2 USB ports, no card reader, no PS2 GPU, 40GB HDD. WiFi is still there.

Not having the PS2 GPU isn't that bad right compared to the HW bc? I don't mind not having the card reader to be honest, 2 USBs fine, if I remembered correctly it can detect a external USB harddisk right?
 
i dunno what's hapening on this last page but it looks like a melt-down.

it seems we still don't have much of an idea what's in and what's out other than the USB port number and the probability of wifi, correct?

We don't really know yet. It would have to depend on how well Sony can create an all-software solution. Right now it's a software/hardware hybrid. Some reports suggest that there just won't be any PS2 BC because of this. We'll see.
 
So if they remove the ps2 GS (they actually did, atleast thats what I been reading) how many ps2 games would be playable in the ps3?

How many games are playable in the 360 right now?

(for independent comparison purpose, not war or fanboy ahoy)

PD: one last Q, how hard would be to emulate that GS?, it can't be imposible, i have seen some PC emulators that run ps2 games a 50FPS (I saw a pic it was FF X)

No, as mentioned earlier, there are PS3's with an all hardware BC, these are compatible with most PS2 games out there.

Then there are the later PS3s first introduced in PAL territories with software CPU (Emotion Engine) emulation and hardware GPU (Graphics Synthesizer). This has less compatiblity than the all hardware BC.

Its rumored the 40GB model which is the latest will either have a complete software emulation of CPU and GPU or no PS2 BC at all.

20GB/60GB NTSC - Full hardware BC
60GB PAL/80GB NTSC - EE removed, GS still present
40GB - No hardware BC?
 
Now that rumble's back, it turns out that the SixAxis tilt won't work with backwards compatibility. That feature is so last gen anyway.

You're connecting all the wrong dots Shog. GS emulation is every bit as hard (actually I would say harder) for Xenos as it is for RSX, even though based on your paper stats it should be no problem since it has the "bandwith" to satisfy your requirements.
The hard parts aren't in the bandwith - but then I'm sure you read my (and few other peoples) numerous posts on this subject at B3D, so I'm not gonna repeat myself here.

That said, you're also assuming a lot if you think that GS-less SKU will come out and THEN the BC teams will start thinking about what to do with it. It's the same old repeat of Euro launch when everyone was acting like Sony just conjured the EE emulator out of nothing and dropped it in 2 weeks before Europe launch.

Because it's got to be cheaper to produce one version of the PS3 than to produce two versions.

When the PS3 was revised to not include the EE, the previous PS3 stopped being produced.

When this new PS3 with no GS is in production, why would Sony keep making the more expensive one?

Well the technical speculation is mostly just to try to figure out why retailers would be saying Sony is telling them there is no PS2 BC in the 40 GB PS3 units.

The default position to expect is that since

A. Sony was talking up BC as a big feature of not only PS3 but the entire Playstation brand philosophy

B. Sony's obviously put a lot of work into making BC work really well with image quality enhancements and rapidly improving the EE emulator compatibility on a nearly monthly basis (we've had more BC updates with PS3 this year than MS has released since the 360 launched, if that means anything)

C. Sony's mentioned plans to start delivering PS2 content over PSN ala the PS1 games

We should assume BC is in the new PS3 unless Sony tells us it's not.

But retailers are saying, Sony says it's not in.

Something to worry about.
