PS3 40GB Euro Doggystyle Edition™ OFFICIAL!

If you want BC you can always buy a 80GB. In fact I suspect they intentionally crippled the 40GB version to make those who want BC buy 80GB. Later 40GB users may want to upgrade to 80GB or other future SKUs with BC too.

not exactly. By using two SKUs that cost pretty much the same to produce, Sony can bring in higher margins (read: profit) from the higher priced sku by appealing to the hardcore.

You don't think microsoft has 4 SKUs out for no reason, do you?

They probably have the satisfactionary difference now from Sony's perspective.

For the hardcore you have the BC compatible (which has considerably cheaper BC implementation than the launch consoles) slightly higher end console with card readers, more HDD space, 4x USB ports.

For everyone you have the BC less PS3 that's still an absolutely complete next gen console with Blu-ray, 40GB HDD, Wifi (having this in will keep PSN/PS Store/SingStore usage up)..etc.
 
i still think there's gonna be SOME sort of backwards compatibility involved in a lower-end model.

it just won't be one of its key features.

it'd be like...being able to print to epson printer

Yes, I am over the moon over this news.

I had actually contemplated pulling the trigger 2 weeks ago as the original Blu-Ray offer was expiring on September 30th.
I was gonna buy an 80 gig it at the SonyStyle store but these freaking GAF rumors were getting too persistent to ignore.
So I decided to punt on the free Blu-Rays and just wait and see.
Luckily, the deal was re-instated with BETTER MOVIES.
The best part is, with the Sony Reward points I get from buying the PS3 at the SonyStyle store, I'll almost have enough points for another free movie.

Sorry if this sounds too "bragadoious", but I am really excited.Reading GAF got me the super deal!!!!!

I hope that not ture. I want a PS3 for $400 but I also want it to be backwards compatibility. I have to many PS2 games. I have around 180 PS2 games. and my old PS2 is starting to go out.

Yeah but essentially all those 360 skus are the same hardware. Premium and Elite are the same boards now, core doesn't have HDMI but I don't think core is being made, MS probably has tons of cores lying around waiting to be sold since it only ever accounted for 20% or so of 360s sold.

The other difference is case color and HDD, other stuff packed in the retail box (cables and controller).

I don't see why they would remove backwards compatibility. They wouldn't be losing any money including software emulation. I'm not certain about the PS3 Dualshock 3 rumble working with ps2 games though.

as far as we know the upcoming 40 as well as the EU60 and US80 are using the same hardware as well. Only the US 60 gig was noticeably different, and that's being phased out.

the HDDs in the PS3's are swappable, I don't think it really makes a difference what size they are- the core of the unit is most likely identical between all three.

Well, as far as we know, the 40 GB unit has a different hardware configuration than the 80 GB. Fewer USB ports and no card readers for sure, and very likely now no GS. So Sony would be producing two different versions of the PS3 board, while MS is only producing one version of the board, just packaging it differently.

It matters if the price delta of the 80 over the 40 is sufficiently large to include the cost of the GS HW.

I don't see what's so complicated about this. Want the complete experience? Then cough up that extra dough and buy the most complete version of the system. If you want to play PS3 games but don't feel like paying the premium, congratugoddamnlations, here's a system tailor made for you. If this iteration comes without BC, then boothefuckhoo, it's obviously designed specifically to offer a PS3 option for those on a budget. You can't always have everything.

The problem is it's not like the regular consumer knows the difference. Sure your average gaffer may know but it's not like Sony is telling people about the difference is BC between the models.

I don't have a problem with MS leaving out components other than the exclusion of a means of actually saving progress of games. What I do have a problem with is the price of the standalone components.

In defense of the usual suspects, whatever PS3 console you end up buying, you will have the 100% full PS3 experience and the 100% full Blu-ray experience.

I'm pretty sure at some point in the past, the full PS3(tm) experience included full compatibility with all games in the Playstation library.

You might not be aware of this, but people are mostly stupid. Expect returns.

I'm most definitely in the market for a cheaper PS3, since it has a number of features I will never use, but no BC and it's no sale for me. The PS3 immediately loses its ability to pimp it's huge back library, even to those who never owned a PS2. So I say that move is retarded. Take out wireless anything, remove any kind of reader, block the ability to play blu-ray movies, but don't take away the BC. Even more limited than the 80gig versions would be better than cutting it out entirely.

Yep. There's still a HDD so you always have a means of saving progress, and all games should be playable on the system.

I'd think of that as a bonus rather than part of the PS3 experience.

Out of curiousity, what things have MS left out that people made a big deal out of?


The only one I can think of is the HDD for the core. IMO, that is a VERY different situation, since it fractures the actual 360 market from a dev standpoint.

But from a consumer standpoint, it means that any version of the 360 you buy can ultimately be upgraded to the "full" experience.

What we have heard about the 40 GB PS3 suggests this is not the case.

Both situations are less than ideal.

How many people still use BC on PS2, in a few years this is a moot point. Just keep your ps2 if you wanna play the games so bad.

The problem with that is that my PS3 upscales my PS2 games on my hdtv quite nicely, unlike my PS2.
