So, you know, I really need the PS3 to play these powerhouse games.

Out of curiosity, can those stand alone players be updated like the PS3 can? The BDP 1200 doesnt output at 1080p/24hz for example. The PS3 can, after a recent FW update.

Besides, I dont think that model is HDMI 1.3 either.

the sammy bdp1200 does indeed have 1080p/24hz as of last firmware update...firware updates are via disc or on the sammy bdp1200, it has a built in ethernet port so it will d/l and install new updates....it also handles the java stuff like on POTC 1 and 2 great. And again, you can not hear it while its on or off. They have a 1400 coming as well.

If you arent into games, I wouldnt buy a blu ray player till the final spec models hit later this year any way. If you play games, the ps3 is a no brainer as a blu ray player.

The biggest thing is, I wouldn't get a standalone player until 2.0 spec players are released.

All players are currently 1.0 spec, meaning they can't decode TrueHD or DTA-MA (you need a specific receiver to decode). Denon has announced their first 1.1 spec player, which will decode TrueHD and DTS-MA, as well as have stellar analog outputs (though it'll cost a good $1500+. 2.0 spec adds internet connectivity.

The PS3 won't have very good analog outs at all compared to standalone players, but if you are only using HDMI, that's not a problem. The PS3 has pretty decent digital video processing (although it still won't match an HQV Reon standalone). So yeah, the PS3 is a pretty good player, especially for the money, but it most likely won't outdo any standalone player out there.

The main reason I'd get the PS3 now though, is that it's by far the most flexible player out there because of internet connectivity and heavy firmware updates. And hey, it plays games!

So many things wrong with this post:

First of all, the PS3 *does indeed* decode Dolby TrueHD and outputs that as uncompressed LPCM via HDMI.........that is why you see the little "Dolby TrueHD" insignia on the side of the PS3

You might be thinking of the fact no current Blu Ray play will pass a DTHD or dts HD bitstream soundtrack over HDMI for the reciever or pre/pro to decode it (like the Onkyo 605 and up, for example)...but forget all that since passing a DTHD or dts HD bitstream over HDMI nets you NO ADVANTAGE over decoding it within the actual BD or HD DVD player itself and passing it as LPCM over HDMI, just like the PS3, or the Toshibas HD DVD players are doing it, to name a few....

The Denon DVD-3800BDC Blu ray player you are talking about supports BD-ROM version 1.1 and BD-Java...so you can get the fancy PIP features but guess what, Sony has gone on record to say the PS3 will also support BD-J via a firmware update not to mention dts HD Master Audio decoding is also in the cards for PS3 as has been mentioned by SCEI Japan Engineers...so BD-Java is planned for PS3.....so no advantage there either!!!

Also note that hat BD-Live(requires internet capablities) does not include the concept of PiP.....in other words, you can have a BD-Video 1.0 player with BD-Live, a BD-Video 1.1 Player with BD-Live, and a BD-Video 1.1 Player without BD-Live.....

And speaking of HQV, if you ever frequented the big "PS3 1.8 firmware update" thread, you would already know the PS3 did a great job with the HQV test DVD....better than just about any other Blu ray player in fact.....
