Bluetooth boost

CSR, the Bluetooth chip specialist, raced to a record high yesterday on hopes that it could win a big contract from Sony. Its shares gained 35p to 995p amid talk that it could be named as the designer of the Bluetooth device in the wireless controller of the new PlayStation 3. Bluetooth is a short-range radio link that transmits information between computers, mobile phones and other electronic gadgets. UBS expects Sony to ship 10m PS3 consoles by March 2007. As such it believes a deal with Sony could be very lucrative. Moreover, the Swiss bank, which yesterday upped its target price for CSR to 1150p from 1050p citing strong fourth quarter sales, believes Sony could announce who has won the controller contract at this week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

More fuel to the fire of delay rumours, as I guess this means the controller itself isn't even finished yet.

Come on Feb / Sony, you've got some 'splaining to do...

The 10m PS3's is an estimate by yet another analyst I guess, probably based upon Sony's 10m in 1 year PS2 launch.

Uh, that part has been in production for quite a while now (Bluetooth chipsets). The fact that Sony hasn't publically chosen that partner would hardly seem a reason for a whole system delay. There are a half dozen companies that can provide those bluetooth controllers in high volume.

Uhhh.. Sorry guys. The controllers not ready yet. We'll launch later.

Well, I had considered that, but surely they would be reporting CSR as a chip "supplier" rather than designer?

"...could be named as the designer of the Bluetooth device in the wireless controller of the new PlayStation 3."
I agree that it's use has ambiguities, they could be referring to something already designed, seeing as how old the bluetooth spec is, but a nagging doubt still tugs that they would only have stated supplier rather than designer.

I'm not suggesting a delay, plenty of others have though, I just felt it odd that something as basic as a bluetooth controller would still be so early in the pre-production phase at this point in time.
