PS3 = entertainment server?

Article in French but I'll translate the main points.
Georges Fornay, Senior Vice-President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has declared in a recent interview on Boursier.com that:
In 2006 the french portable market will be bigger than the home console market,a thing that has never happened since 2001 when Nintendo launched Pokemon.
They will outsell Apple and its Ipod in a year time in France.
PS3 will be an home entertainment server easy to use with a very strong convergence between games, movies, music, broadband Internet and downloadble contents.PS3 will also have a big storage capacity and will replace the DVD reader and video tape recorder under the TV.

I don't need anything beyond a game console, thanks.

He also says precisely that it's the end of 'games only' consoles :D so it seems you'll have to look elsewhere unless there will be different versions.

Will this kind of functionality be standard or extra, though?

To be honest, I find it funny that MS made a HD standard last time, but this time it looks like they won't, even when the kind of experience they want to offer on the high end could actual make substantial use out of it.

I kinda hope PS3 has this stuff as standard, but I also kinda doubt it ;)

I wonder if "easy to use" = built-in eyetoy interface :p IBM harped on about a leap in realtime interfaces that Cell could accomodate, so I hope Sony shows us something new and different.

When he refers to "big storage capacity" does he mean the optical disc format or HD...?

edit - also, can you tell how desperate I am for PS3 information? :lol

It would be quite awesome if among other things, the standard PS3 came with a version of Linux; I think PC manufacturers and Microsoft would crap themselves so bad if that happened. Along with HDTV ready and VGA output and USB2 ports...

Would also help if you could set in the bios whether or not it boots a game directly if it's in the disc drive or goes to the PS3 OS, which gives all the options for a media server/entertainment system.

Nothing new really? Its about the same as PS2, plays music, movies and so on.

I just hope PS3 will have a DVI output so I can use it with my PC monitor.

It seems that PS3 and 360 will be quite similar in functionalities... I'm guessing how will Nintendo fit in this "multimedia hub" scenario.

i had the same apprehension with the PSP, because i was worried that Sony was merely trying to take on way too much at once without a clear focus on gaming, but those fears have been assuaged with the initial release of games and those upcoming. i feel the same way about the PS3's supposed media center features.

i wonder if the TiVo features would really be optional though. Aside from the need for a tv tuner, you've already got hardware capable of tv-recording and time shifting in the PS3, making non-game related hardware costs fairly nominal. i wonder if this is what was meant by the "PS3 won't use all of the CPU for games" comment. Part of it could be used to record shows while playing games seamlessly.

A google translation:

"We will badly make not advertisements around PlayStation 3 in mid-May at the time of the E3 Show of Los Angeles. The PSP traces the line and gives the tone of what will be PlayStation 3, with a convergence even more pushed between plays, films, music, Internet high flow and remote loading. PlayStation 3 will have of course a higher storage capacity. It will be a waiter of entertainment in residence, general public and easy to use. With PlayStation 3, one definitively leaves the market of the pure game consoles to join the market of electronics general public. It is a question of being essential ' under the télévision' in the show to replace the video tape recorder and reader DVD."

What does the first bit mean "We will badly make not advertisements around PlayStation 3 in mid-May at the time of the E3 Show of Los Angeles."??

Also, I think it's less clear now if he meant PS3 would replace a VCR functionally..which would suggest hard disks etc. - rather that it would replace them as the next "under the tv" essential. Although I'm sure PS3 will have a HD, standard or otherwise (probably otherwise ;)).

Eventually Sony will get the Playstation machines to do what they want them to do.

I see no way they'd pull it off without including a substantial HDD out of the box as standard though. (at $299 no less)

I wonder if PS3 will have an internal hard disk as the standard.
Common sense would tell there will be a basic model and a PSX-2 like model..but no one could really tell at this point...

Now the real question is: What will Nintendo do? Try and go the home entertainment device route, or keep their games-only philosophy?

This will be an interesting battle indeed.

They'd almost have to do 2 models IMO as I dont see how they can enable all of the functionality suggested here (on top of everything else) at an acceptable (for a game console) price. But they did stack the PSP with features for the low-low so we'll see in a couple weeks (hopefully).

Damn bablefish :D
He says that what they're going to announce at the E3 on the PS3 will be 'not bad'.Which I guess it's an ironical way to tell that people won't be disappointed.

Actually, no, "pas mal" means many, so they'll make many announcements.

I've never used the PS2 or Xbox for any of the multimedia functions that they offer. I've used the PSP to watch movies a few times, though, so I guess anything's possible.

The problem is that in the past consoles havent been able to do things like play a CD or a DVD as well as a standalone player could. I guess if they fix that, and don't significantly increase the price, I'm all for it.

Pardon me for being skeptical, however...

That's what they said last time. I suppose now, they really, really, mean it?

Well, the only "games only" console left is the GCN, so I don't know WTF they are talking about..

Except for the replacing the VCR thing, this sounds like an XBOX....in fact, it sounds more like a PSX which was supposed to do all those things...

Yeah, I would assume SCE would *have* to support a 2-SKU PS3 line.....can't see them abandoning the $299 "games with some multimedia too" product for a high-end-only Game/Server product which would certainly be more than $299...

They would need somthing like the PS2 and the PSX, but for the next-generation....if not, they will be rolling out the red carpet for X360 which MS would gladly take that $299 spot if Sony doesn't want it....

Methinks SCEI is "mind juking" MS as much as they can(who are the kings of FUD, so what goes around comes around, I guess)

Regarding PSP, Georges Fornay states: 'We expect to sell in France with a 12 month period as many PSPs as Apple sold in the world, that is 1 million units.
200.000 units will be provided in the first weeks during the French launch.
In 2006, the french market for handhelds will be bigger that the console market, something that only happened in 2001 when Nintendo launched Pokemon. PSP has already sold 1.5 miilons in Japan since 2004, and sales of the portable have passed a million in the US where it is available since march 24th.

Sony representative also comments on Playsattion 3: 'we will make a lot of announcements regarding Playstation 3 in mid may at the E3 expo in Los Angeles.
PSP draws the line and gives a glimpse of what Playstation 3 will be, with a convergence even stronger between games, movies, music and broadband internet. Playstation 3 will have a higher storage capacity. It will be a home entertainment server for the masses and easy to use. With Playstation 3, we will finally leave the market of pure gaming console to join the consumer electronic market. It will take the place of DVD and VHS under your TV.

In that it's the only one that doesn't play movies and/or music, yeah. But you can go as far back as the original Playstation and apply that standard as well.

Even with the PS2 and XBox, we were promised rather pie-in-the-sky hopes and visions of living room media servers that would download movies, music and everything else both from the Internet and your home collection into one central area. It's really no longer a matter of technology, it's a matter of convincing the mainstream that it's something they want, and I think that's a very tall order.

I'd like it if it can stream from my PC etc, like my xbox.

I wonder how integrated the eyetoy might be? It'd be good if it could watch you tossing one off to streamed porn and automatically fast forward boring bits based on your stroke rate :p

:lol Indeed...

As for Nintendo, they'll probably stay game only with the Rev unless they've had a total philosphy change the last couple of years.
