I don't care. I can say "Hey GAF, I cracked the hypervisor! But, I'm not going to post any proof yet." And I'm sure a vast majority of you would've believed it.

Until he proves he's done it this is just smoke and mirror's to me. No, cracking the iPhone doesn't make him anymore legit.

What should give strength to your statement is that there's been groups distributing torrents of ripped ISOs of PS3 games for years, even though no one can actually play them.

We want homebrew.

A port of XBMC (somehow, it's a X86 only software, even under Linux).

Piracy would just give Sony an even greater incentive to fix this hack.

True.. now that I think about it 512MB for linux would be nice too or a swanky media player like the old xbox. But then again it does pretty much anything you want without hacking it media wise.

I really don't think it will, I assume (since the ps3 has not been 'hacked' yet that the achitechture is harder to work with, thus amatuer hacker unfriendly) it would be more difficult to do than the 360, and potentially more expensive if burning media. Also a DVD rip is probably much less of a hassle to download, and looking forward I expect many of the AAA must have PS3 exclusives to take up even more space.

I'd say that all the incentive they need is the mess that is the PSP. Any hacks to the PS3 need to be fixed as soon as possible before they get out of hand.

You already can, though. With the exception of MKV files, the PS3 is the ultimate media center. The addition of PS3 Media Server installed on a decent computer somewhere else on the network makes it a literal one-stop shop for all your streaming and playback needs. The PS3 is a ridiculously good media server and needs no bullshit homebrew excuses for people to try to mask their piracy justifications.
 
Interesting. I doubt widespread piracy (or, sadly, homebrew) will come from this, but I'm really curious about the details.
 
After the last report of a PS3 'hack' I'm going to take a pinch of salt on this one.
Like Several have said, there is a lot of potential for a homebrew PS3, but given Sony's new found ability to stamp out any sort of backdoor, I've got a feeling they'll have this ironed out before it can even get going.
 
Since the slim doesn't have support the installation of other OS, aren't potential buttpirates pwnd anyway? Or is that feature removal just software and not hardware related?

Of course if he does, Sony can probably easily find and sue the shit out of him! So hurrah!

There's nothing like XBMC on the PS3. Sure, you can play the files, but there's no sort of cataloguing / IMDB integration etc like you see in XBMC. Not to mention that the iso file handling is piss poor.

Indeed. This hack, if it is real, will eventually lead to piracy. The hacks author might not have meant for that to happen, but it will happen. Like it did for the Wii and the Homebrew channel which eventually lead to CIOS and all that.

Any lack of codec support is fixed with PS3 Media Server.

You are right. But I would suspect that disc-based piracy has been on the decline in the last few years due to the rise of internet piracy. This may just be anecdotal evidence but: I barely ever hear about pirated discs anymore other than in Asia and the Middle East (VCDs etc.). Of course, given the recent development and renewed piracy potential, this isn't saying these things couldn't rise again.

Just looking at downloading PS3 games - I suppose Japan and Korea are the biggest threats due to their astronomical broadband speeds. Elsewhere in the world, I would say that download speeds are just not fast enough to put a worrying dent in sales. At least, not if the user wants to play the game in the first week of release. I would also think that people downloading 20gb worth of files in a week would warrant some sort of behind-the-scenes investigation.

Using a PS3 as a media center is hardly a solution. HTPC or XBMC is the way to go, due to cataloging, ease of use, and support nearly every format without transcoding.

The XBMC page on Wikipedia says it supports PowerPC...

My mistake, XBMC is on PPC as of mid last year. I had no idea. I don't think it runs very well and I don't know if it's officially supported, I couldn't find much info on it. However, I will look into it - I have a PowerMac G4 that's doing nothing in my computer room right now.

I absolutely agree but it's not as if the PSP still can't be hacked. Usually hacks open a can of worms that is very difficult to get organized again. The only option is a hardware solution.

I'm not so convinced that everything benefits from piracy to be honest. Very popular, entrenched and mainstream systems seem to do, or at least are not hurt by it (PS1, PS2, DS, Wii..) but other less popular systems almost unquestionably suffered from it (DC, PSP). Which group will the PS3 fall into?

hacking the PS3 has the least benefit of all consoles ever.

Wishing for a better media center (especially on PS3 :lol ) is a laughable excuse and not at all worth opening the console to piracy etc.

e.g. "bu-bu-but I want to play my ripped mkvs": change the container format yourself (not even the need for re-encoding), play them in Linux (fat-PS3) or stream them with a PC to your PS3.
