I think its less to do with sony PR hyping than media and people on boards hear something and then assume "zomg its going to be megaton."

I think it's that Playstation owners really want to know what the release schedule is for this year and beyond. We know about as much about upcoming titles as we did before the launch. There are so many question marks right now. 360 users pretty much know the big games that are coming in the next year and about when they're coming out.

I also have to remember this is GDC and it doesn't make any sense for them to come to the Game Developers Conference and talk a bunch about release dates or games they have coming so much.

It's going to be all about the PSN, PS Store, and the March firmware update.

As it is, with GI getting Uncharted and EGM getting Ratchet & Clank in their March issues I think it's likely that GDC will have some surprises but not what people are thinking.

My own 2 cents worth.....

- Not one, but new pieces of added functionality to the online system. Likely Myspace type of community options.

- Big bit about Singstar. Bringing people together. Wanting it to be more of an online community rather than a game.

- New Eyetoy demo.

- A couple of new PSN games announced.

- A quick tech demo of either Wipeout PS3 or another first party game, not yet announced.... *coughSonyCambridgecough*.....not a trailer, something similar to the Eight Days car demo last year

Or...

- Phil Harrison walks out, takes a massive hit from a bong and proceeds to sing the entire Billy Joel back catalogue with Singstar. When he falls alseep Kaz Hirai comes out and says that all the songs were downloaded through PSN. He carries Harrison of the stage with a fireman's lift. Lights go down.

Jamil was interviewed for 40 minutes by the guys on the (always spectacular) Next-gen.biz podcast. Colin asks him specifically about Harrison's keynote, here's my abridged transcript:

Colin: Jamil, one of your keynote speakers is Phil Harrison, and I think its interesting that Phil's gonna be going up on stage at a time when Sony seems to be in a somewhat embattled state since the launch of the PS3. What can we expect from Phil's speech? Do you think they will use this forum as an opportunity to answer their critics and get their message back out?

Jamil: I would say we've had a very strong relationship with Sony, and we've been privy to some of what they have in development. So much so that we're very confident in what they are going to be presenting. The key is understanding that Phil is going to be speaking to the development community. This is an opportunity to really convince the people that can make or break the success of that platform, and he's going to take that opportunity.

PS: I get Colin and Gary's voices confused, so if i had it mixed up, don't sack me.

Just reading this, it looks somewhat bland, but his tone seems pretty excited about what Phil is going to announce. But like he says, the audience is the development community, so I seriously doubt we will see Killzone2, let alone a Killzone2 demo. However, I think we will see some new game footage, a lot of exciting things related to the network platform, and the evolution of the PS3 as a development platform.

The key to speculation should be in putting Jamil's hints together. On the one hand, he says GDC will "make PS3 owners very happy", and on the other hand, he says Phil's announcement will be intended for the development audience. So what kinds of announcements will appeal to both audiences?

A pricedrop does nothing for PS3 owners as has been said many times in this thread.
Rumble really does nothing for me.
The only thing that can actually fit this quote to me would be Sony locking some solid exclusives, having dates for things on the PSN (SNK, PSX, and other companies offerings) instead of the "soon" bit, and some actual interesting uses for the PSN (music-videos-who knows what else).
