PS3 - Why am I constantly kicked offline?

Outcast2004 said:
I get the same issue with a direct wired connection to the modem. If I sit down for a couple hours of gametime I'll get at the least 3-5 network error then disconnects.

I don't have this problem with anything else in my home.

Call bullshit if you want, but it's my experience with it and it's not the most favorable.

Seriously, what the fuck is with some of you people? Get off your high horses for a few minutes. Not everyone has the same experiences... that much should be obvious by now.

Calm down dear. Obviously a lot of us get more for what we pay for than you do.

Bully wully, mate.

So I've flashed to DD-WRT. Maybe it's my imagination or a placebo effect but browsing even seems snappier now.

Hopefully it'll fix my wireless problems downstairs..

I had a few of gimpy Linksys routers. The custom firmware did make everything run faster and not to mention STABLE. You are not imagining it. Anyone owns a flashable Linksys router SHOULD by default use a custom firmware. It's amazing how a big company like that can release such crappy but popular product.

It's just a guess based on some browser plugins I'm using, but I think it's dramatically sped up simultaneous connections..as well as just general download time of things. Plugins that would normally take a short while to 'load', doing server calls (despite a fast backend behind them), now practically 'blink' on when the page loads.

I would but I'm using WRT54G2 :(

Never had a problem with my Linksys router and PSN... the key to narrowing this problem down would be to direct connect and see if the issue goes away.

I also know that some ISP's are holding back Live and PSN type systems might be part of the problem... I am looking at you Cox communications... freaking joke of an ISP.

Check your connection or stop using hick online services lol.

I RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARELY get kicked off. Ive played plenty of Killzone and Ive only lost connection from a game once or twice since Ive played it.

I was close to making a thread lol.

I also get dropped connections but thats not all. What annoys me the most is how my PC has inconsistent download speeds while hooked up to a router. I usually reboot my router every morning and a lot of times my speed will be back up to 500kb/s for a few hours but then drops to half that speed and stays there. My PS3 usually maxes out the connection longer than the PC but also turns slow after a while.

I havent been successful in doing a static IP, I think it has something to do with my modem being in bridged mode instead of routed mode, and I also havent tried the Tomato firmware? (dlink) so I will try that but I would really like to get a static Ip up and running. Oh, the error is usually a DNS error btw.

Woah, I didn't know PS3 and Linksys have issues. I use a Netgear WNDR3300 with DD-WRT no issues with mediaserver, online gaming, etc while on a wireless connection to boot. Always go with custom firmware if your router is supported, more control and tools used to troubleshoot connection issues.

Custom firmware - if your model supports it. Last time I was looking my model was one of the few that weren't supported -_- (WRTH54GS here).
Ditch it and get some other model? Those WRT54x ones aren't too pricey.

What should I be looking into? Mine is a Linksys WRT54G.
I heard only good things about OpenWRT: http://openwrt.org/

The conclusion I have come to (based on my own personal experiences) is this...

I dont think its the person's router, etc.....OR PSN. My take is that Sony's Network just has some incompatabilities with certain ISPs and how they route traffic.

My issue....I used to have Time Warners Roadrunner service and i would always have super slow PSN downloads, and all sorts of weird disconnects. I called Sony about it, they basically said it wasnt their issue, and everything on their end was fine. My ISP came out and checked my equipment, and said (you guessed it) everything was fine. I dealt with the inconsistent BS until FIOS came to my area.

Since getting FIOS, my PSN downloads are blazing fast, all the time, any time of day. I rarely get a PSN disconnect and when i do its during maintenance times (i find out later..). Many online games are also peer-to-peer so you are also relying on other players internet connections to keep a stable game going. If their connection is crap you get disconnects, and severe lag, giving the impression that its PSN, but its really not.

I guess there's no real way to know for sure but IMO, the issue lies with certain ISPs having weird incompatabilities with Sonys network.

Because the online system is pretty lacking.

Yes, it's free...but you also get what you pay for.

I have a rock solid connection, but yet I'm still getting kicked off of Killzone every other game. The problem isn't (most likely) on your end.

:lol FUD galore.

i dont think its a problem with sony's 'network'. more likely time warner are just a crappy isp or any number of other reasons (the setup of the cheap router they give you etc)

sony's 'network' is just the internet - if its not working well when its fine for everything else, its your isp's fault, not the internet :lol of course the isp will deny it because they want your money

Normally, I have never had a problem but last night I got signed off 3 different times. I just assumed it was down and haven't tried since but again, before last night there is a random hiccup here and there but rock solid.

Linksys routers and PSN are a bad combo for a lot of people.

Mine did exactly the same thing until I upgraded to custom firmware. Now it's smooth sailing.
Mine was like this until I just updated it in general. Most people don't realize that when they get their router that it needs to be updated. The only reason the OP is getting kicked off of PSN isn't because it sucks as the second poster said, but that their router either A) sucks or B) needs to be updated.

I think this may be the case. Before, I had 7meg Verizon DSL, and I got blazing speeds with PSN downloads. I am now using Time Warner Road Runner 15meg cable, and while the rest of the internet seems to have gotten faster, PSN now downloads slow as molasses.

I had the same issues between my PS3 and my Linksys router. I changed to dlink recently (for n capability for my laptop) and haven't had an issue since.

Interesting, I was having this same problem but only when I tried to DL updates. I never got kicked during a game, anyways it had made playing online generally impossible since I couldn't get the updates. I just disabled the media server connection and was able to download the first update I tried even though it wasn't that fast.

GAF FTW, thanks guys!

I used to have a Belkin N router and was from time to time booted of PSN for no apparent reason. I put my PS3's IP in the DMZ but no change.

Last month I bought a new wireless router (Netgear) and haven't been booted since. So the problem seems to me to be with people's routers.

I have a single 3G modem powering my entire network. It's a very lashed together solution which generally works reasonably but PSN connectivity is awful. I suspect that the PS3 has some kind of keep alive, or DNS issue when going through my network. It could be related to latency, NAT or something else.

Anyway, I didn't have any issues with my old ADSL setup and I can't wait to get back to a decent broadband solution again. Moving house soon so fingers crossed.

I have the same problem with my PS3 - I would say every other time I play LBP user created levels I lose my connection to PSN. No issues with any other devices in my house (Wii, 360, Mac, 2 PCs) :\

Edit: I had never experienced this with my PS3 until after the first KZ2 patch came out - not sure if there is any relation, but that was the start of the consistent PSN drops for me.

I rarely get booted, but I did once last night so this thread caught my eye. After reading some, I went ahead and installed DD-WRT on my WRT54 Linksys router and...wow. Can't believe I didn't know about this earlier.

My wireless card on my laptop is reading a better signal, my browsing is a bit quicker, my downloads are faster, and I haven't even done anything on my PS3 yet except for check data to open ports. The GUI and settings for the DD-WRT firmware are so much better than the Linksys stock firmware.

I have never had a boot from PSN until last night, and when I saw this thread, and I was getting really worried.

Apparently, there was some maintenance going on the PSN at around 2AM EST, which seemed to be when I got booted last night. (Around 11PM PST or so)

I never had this problem until I got KZ2 :(.
For some reason I can't play at home anymore (but I can play elsewhere).... I'm going to turn off media sharing and see if that helps.

i know that i used to randomly get kicked when playing HDREMIX< but i put that down to the game being buggy.

i've been playing bad company recently, and had no kicking from psn issues.

Sounds about right. It was late last night for me too.

Even post patch (SSF2HDR)?

I've never just been disconnected from an online game on my PS3 - at least not through PSN disconnecting on me. Hours and hours and hours spent playing everything from Warhawk to Burnout Paradise online to LittleBigPlanet to MGO to Resident Evil 5 online. The whole time I've had my PS3, like a year and a half now, I've seen PSN disconnect a total of maybe 5 or 6 times (when I'm watching a movie or once or twice when I was playing single player games for example). I've had a Dlink router the entire time and went from BellSouth DSL to Comcast Cable internet and neither has caused problems.

It's absolutely not PSN in general causing your problems like some uninformed people in here suggest. I suppose it's possible PSN has issues with certain ISPs within certain areas but I've never heard of such a thing.

Chances are it has nothing to do with your connection, PS3 or your router. Just setup port-forwarding properly and all your problems will go away.

I usually get kicked off when I've got a large download going on on my PC. Make sure you're not overloading your connection and do port forwards?

Just went from the micro build of DD WRT to the new and final build from mid '08. Things are running better already, more smoothly. I never had issues to begin with but the wireless signal boost helped my Speedtest readings.

Yeah, that was the exact time I was getting booted. I thought this is what this thread was as well when I first saw it.

Anyone who has a linksys wrt54 variant router and isn't flashing it for use with Tomato or DD-WRT is doing it wrong

I have a WRT54GL and it's easily the best router I've ever used in combination with Tomato

In my house, our entire network (2 desktops, laptop, and PS3) runs off of a 5 year-old Linksys WRT54G. Everything is wireless, except for the main desktop.

I can wirelessly stream 1080p movies from my main desktop's hard drive to my PS3 through that router. PSN is no trouble, either.

And Im no router expert. I didnt change use custom settings or install any firmware. Just a regular 5 year-old WRT54G that works like its supposed to, peoples. Actually, since it was designed long before the PS3, I guess its good design that its compatible in the first place.

I can only agree. I dont think I've had one single problem with the router since I flashed to Tomato (over a year now), its serving my PS3, 4 computers and a server. The definition of rock steady.

This was the case until about 1 1/2 ago when I got wind of DD-WRT. The thing is amazing to have on it. You probably have version 2.2 don't you? If so then yours has more on board memory and can handle more. The point being that once I went with CFW, it really did make the router feel like a 600 dollar one with the heft of options and tweak options.

Never had problems with the stock FW but custom FW takes this to the moon.
