Hmm..that last video is nice. Looked nice and responsive, and that was indeed a lot of firefox windows.

Glad to see at least one person with it :lol

It never really hit me how bad the open source crowd gets sometimes until I read a recent slashdot posting about how Firefox had lost its way. I mean, I already knew about the GNOME psychos, but I kinda considered that problem to be contained. ;)
Come on, it' just a vocal minority. Windows and Mac users are equally retarted in my experience.

So ydl.net is down for me at the moment (seems to have gotten too busy), and still no reply on my query to them re. coupon codes. Has anyone actually managed to get it?

I have read this on another forum

Ok looking good a member of the team is going to send me the coupon, i'm speaking to him live on IRC right now.

Edit: email addy for the coupon is support@ydl.net
connect to a freenode server on irc and go to channel yellowdog if you want to get them on the case right away!

Edit 2: right I have the coupon code and I'm downloading as we speak Speed is VERY slow at 60 - 80 kb/s atm and for a 3.4GB file, thats a long download!

Thanks! I might look them up on IRC if they don't get back to me later today.

I see now on their site that they say the coupon code is on the final invoice page, but there certainly was no marked coupon code on that page when I signed up (I searched for "coupon"), and the only thing resembling a code wouldn't fit in the provided field on the account creation page. I hope for new sign-ups they've sorted that out.

Thanks again!

In the fourth video there's a text file stating that only SD and HD TVs and monitors with component inputs are supported. Is that the case?

Furthermore, I ask again: does PS3 Linux support bitperfect audio output? Without it we can forget about DolbyDigital or DTS encoded files playback.

Wow, I don't think i've ever had that many firefox windows open :lol

I was just trying to muster up some enthusiasm.

Don`t lie to us stinkles. We know about your fiendish plans. :(

Bungie have got you buying up all the PS3s in NA to make a giant cluster farm for running the Halo 3 servers! And the sweetest part is, you are costing sony money at the same time!

HEY SDF WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU NOW?

I distinctly remember like, 12 SDF fellows claiming this was the bees knees and that Linux on PS3 would destroy all other consoles, so why are they not hosting it now that we need it. Sony fans? Failures more like. Get it (YDL) hosted plz. It appears to be quite legal, yet ain't nothin happening.

I don't remember *anybody* saying Linux would kill other consoles, just that it was a killer app for the SDF members (like me).

I haven't gotten to it yet-- too busy travelling for the holidays.

There is a chance the PS3 will be perceived as an affordable home computer by the mass market...
*blush*

*wink*

However, that was more in regards to the PS3 being able to outsell the PS2 than anything else.

What's interesting is that Terra Soft's site will list PS3s with Linux preinstalled for sale from their online store once they have enough PS3s to actually do that. I wonder how much they'll charge for something like that.

And can you partition more than 10 GB to an OS or is it set in stone when you want to format and partition an HDD?

I'm curious about how to change the resolution. Right now I've got the PS3 plugged in via HDMI to my 42" and it wont let me change the resolution from 586x380 (its not exactly that, I just cant remember). Any ideas? Am I doing something wrong? Its annoying to use at such a low resolution... Thx.

ps3videomode -? or -h i forgot which will tell you how to select different video modes. For 720p, I'd type ps3videomode -v 3. You have to do it from console before going into X windows.

The format utility in XMB doesn't let you partition more than 10G for other OS iirc.

Not true. It's 10GB for the PS3, or 10GB for the other OS. So one or the other, but it's not locked in as being the Linux that's limited.

Gotta little less than half of the ISO downloaded...argh...it speeds up, an dthen slows down, speeds up and slows down... oh well, iti'll probably be tomorrow morning before I can install it... I'll let you guys know how it goes.... BTW is there an instruction manual specifically for YDL?

Who in the right mind would stick a 120G drive in there and only allocate 10G for PS3 though, unless you don't plan to use the PS3 for games or plan to swap the HDD frequently...

Why is everyone getting so bent out of shape over swapping drives? Why not just keep the stock drive, install Linux on a 10 gig party, and then install all your apps and stuff on an external USB? That way we all win.

Because it's still one extra drive to worry about. Besides I don't see anyone bent out of shape over it.

Once people get into the system a little, I'm sure we'll see how the formatting is handled-- meaning you could format it externally at whatever sizes you wish. Unless Sony has used some proprietary filesystem. Even then, you might be able to set up the partitions externally.

I do plan on pulling out my HDD and having a look sometime, but I have some many things to do with my PS3 first and too little time.

I wonder if a firmware update could allow partitions different from 10 GB. But I doubt enough people would try something like this that needs that kind of support.

how much space do your apps really need? I don't think there would be an issue having all your apps on the 10GB partition

Data is the question. And if you're talking media specifically, then you want to be streaming that from a NAS or PC on the network (surely more likely you'll download/transcode/whatever on the PC - your PS3 won't be on all day).

people who want quite a lot of stuff on the HDD to access directly from the XMB? plenty of things the PS3 can do pretty well in native mode - copy all your mp3s across, a few HD videos - it soon takes the space up.

I think you read it wrong. I don't have problem with 10G partition. I have a 500G media server hooked up to network and it's auto mounted when I boot up PS3 linux. It'd still be nice to split the partition to the size you desire even if it's in the incremental of 10G size.

I don't understand what you are trying to say here. I was questioning who would install a larger HDD and use most of it for Other OS. Only PS3 partition or external HDD can be access from XMB. If you have a 120G drive and allocate only 10G for PS3 and rest for Other OS, you only have 10G to use in XMB.

While I'm not 100% sure of my info, I did answer you already.

Is that partition the only area YDL can see ... or does it have access to the movies and music you use with XMB?

It would be retarded if you needed multiple copies of stuff.

What is that from?

Just finished the download this morning... Installing as we speak. WOW they made it extremely easy to install... I'm telling you, ANYBODY could figure this out...You literally have a PC with the PS3. It is a PC.

update this thread please thanks

I just had YDL installed last night before I went to bed. As expected, the memory footprint is smaller - I think about 20-25 or almost 30M less usage than the FC5 dist in KDE/Gnome which helps a ton as far as performance goes. Hopefully I'll have time to mess with it tonight.

Sure... well, sadly it doesn't look like it's auto detecting the wireless connection, so I'm running through an ethernet cable now. But I am posting this via my PS3, using my keyboard and Yellow Dog Linux. It's obviously much more robust that the built in PS3 browser, I mean it is firefox afterall. i just wish they had flash support. For some reason though, I still can't get used to the idea of usijng my 600 dollar gaming machine as a PC. It just feels kinda, well, weird. Heh. But it's cool that you can do this nonetheless. Installation takes about an hour tops, and it's pretty much ready to go after the install. Everything went really smooth. I'm serious when I say that anyone can do this... even somone who's never used or installed Linux before. Now once they actually get into the operating system, will they be able to use it well? Sure! But it's still Linux, so expereince is a major benefit when configuring the O/S. For instance, I can't get any of my media to play, not even mp3s... I'm going to look into this now.

EDIT: The O/S is a little on the slow as well, which certainly hinders the expereince a bit. Don't expect to be blazing fast like you may on your desktop. It's not at a snails pace or anything, but you can definietly tell this is a PPC and not an Intel chip doing the calculations...

mrklaw said:
yeah, a step by step for idiots would be great.

It already is step by step... the Yellow Dog team has a Step By Step PDF you can download. It's like 8 pages, and it literally holds your hand through the install... you can't mess it up.

What gives you the impression that chips with the PPC instruction set are innately slow?
The source of the sluggish performance is likely to be the lack of RAM available to the OS.

Edit: I mean, it would be fair enough to say "you can definitely tell this is a custom processor, and not a general-purpose desktop chip doing the calculations".
