Interesting docs on the innard working of the Ps3 Linux kernel:

Mr. Tone said:What gives you the impression that chips with the PPC instruction set are innately slow?
The source of the sluggish performance is likely to be the lack of RAM available to the OS.
Edit: I mean, it would be fair enough to say "you can definitely tell this is a custom processor, and not a general-purpose desktop chip doing the calculations".

JeffDowns said:Yea... I dunno, that's what the resolution defaulted to... I was afraid to tinker around with the resolution settings so much due to the fact that they claim it can mess up your television... I'm not gonna even risk it, although the chance is unlikely.
MAN my eyes hurt trying to use that thing. I have a 32 inch hd set, and the text was pretty clear, but it's still got nothin on my pc monitor that I can use from a foot away.... It's cool... but it's mos def nothing I'd use to surf the web regularly on. Emulators, and Tivo-esque functions sure, but replacement for my desktop? I'll pass.

Also if you want to change the resolution you could edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
I'm still trying to find out where it stores font size for the windows... changing it one by one in config panel is a pain...

iapetus said:Yes.
There's a link to a torrent earlier in the thread.
lessthanthree said:Question before I install:
Do you need a USB mouse or will the controller work until I get one? I have the keyboard already.
Ok, thanks.Stinkles said:You need a usb mouse and keyboard, yes. At least you do for Fedora. I am sure you do for YDL install too.
JeffDowns said:BE SURE TO BACKUP YOUR FILES. That's all I gotta say. ALL of my stuff got deleted. I thought this was just doing a partition, not reformatting the whole drive. ARGH. All my RR7 data, GONE. I feel so dumb....

it's not connecting for me. i'm at the network configuration screen thing, and I have no idea what to enter for the wireless adapter brand. Are you sure that guy wasnt on a wire?antiloop said:Yes, If you look at the vids 1 or 2 pages back he got it working without problems.

Once the system is started, you may try several video modes to determine which will work with your monitor or television. The mode can be changed by invoking the ps3videomode program:
ps3videomode -v #
Where # is one of the video mode numbers listed above. The default "install" and "ydl" options use mode 3, running at 720p. Mode 1 is a safe default that works on the most monitors or televisions.

SleazyC said:Anyone happen to get yum working? I keep getting this error:
Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: base
Which leads me to believe that their repositories aren't even up?

Fixed it.Vennt said:Your avatar is over the size limit, please replace it. (150Kb max)
Yeah. That's how I'm hooked up.Onix said:Does YDL work via HDMI?

What is your avatar of?
It uses 6 of them, says that when you boot up.Pimpwerx said:Ok, any benches yet? It's gotta be faster than Fedora, and I'd love to see what sort of util of the SPEs they're getting. Does it show the different cores like Fedora? I think Fedora was showing two 1.6GHz "cores" (threads), so I wondered if YDL did the same or maybe even showing the SPEs. PEACE.
For the record, I have never used YDL or a PS3 and have no clue whether standard methods are of any use - but what does 'ifconfig' and 'iwconfig' report if you run them in a terminal?lessthanthree said:Still need help with WiFi...
