PS4 and XboxOne, what will be the better multimedia device?

For people like me who don't like to pay $100+/month on cable TV subscription, the PS4 since the apps will always work and not be behind a paywall.

Playstation 3 has a nice feature of 1.5x speed fast forward while retaining the audio. It's a nice way to get the gist of things happening on a video file, such as the between fight packages and commentary on a UFC match. Hell, even on some of the boring matches with a bunch of non-action on the mat can be watched at a better speed this way. I hope PS4 retains it because it's one of my favorite features for video playing.

I also hope they add mkv support as that's a huge drawback of PS3 media capability.

What about native support for different video formats. In my experience this gen, the PS3 destroyed the Xbox 360 there (even playing MKV!). I'm going to assume that they will be evenly matched now?

The Playstation 3 does not play MKVs. But it does support VOBs, and using MKV2VOB, an MKV file can be converted to VOB in a minute or two.

So far only Xbox has HBO Go so for me that is the best multimedia box. Hopefully it comes to PS4!

Seriously, WHY isn't Go on PS3 yet?

Early in 2010 Sony had made a deal with HBO to get its shows content on their service, so what has stopped HBO Go from entering PS3? Do they have a deal with MS?

Yup, just like Netflix at one time, MS makes deals with content providers so they can keep them exclusively behind a paywall.

that's fucked up. HBO Go needs to go everywhere, makes no sense from the perspective of HBO either.

Hopefully Sony can shake those shackles

Well it has just recently been released for the Apple TV, so if there is some sort of deal in place it must only apply to consoles.

Xbox probably because of the snapping and voice features and it running windows 8.

Indeed, is there even any need for a thread where Xbox is the clear winner. TV integration, Apps, Exclusive TV Shows. This is one department Sony needs to catch up on.

Do you just listen to press conferences and believe whatever they tell you? MS might have a grand intent, but what they shared in May was barely more than Nintendo offer on wiiU. It can change the channel on your cable box is about as 'integrated' as it gets.

They have some great ideas (pin favourite shows etc) but without properly tying into all of your media sources it is significantly weakened. What's the point in me pinning eg Game of Thrones and it letting me know the next episode is on tomorrow if I can't set my DVR to record it? Or telling me that it was on yesterday, so I want to watch it but Xbox can't control my DVR to start playback (things you can do now with an iPhone so the infra is there)? As soon as I have to pick up another remote, you are no longer a 'seamless' service.

The potential is definitely there, I just hope MS do more than slap some apps on it.

In the US, I would say XB1 hands down

Everywhere else is the same. I'm in Canada and preferred the PS3, but my 360 ran everything as well (PS3Media server also works on the 360 btw)

Has it been confirmed that it won't be able to do any of that? Surely it can just use its infrared blaster to control the DVR.

I'm assuming PS4. If the Xbone is plastered by ads like the 360 it's going to be terrible and I won't want to turn it on just like this generation.

I think the Xbox One will probably have more multimedia support via apps (At least in the US). I really hope at least the PS4 supports MKV files out of the gate though. Streaming or converting them can take a lot of time.

Does either really offer anything current gen doesn't?

Blu ray, Netflix, Hulu ect are all available now, will either console support the likes of mkv? I doubt it as Sony and MS like to push their own codecs that nobody cares about.

X1 supports some kind of cable running though the console BS that I can't even begin to describe how pointless it sounds. As it stands now I have a 360, cable box, popcorn hour and Apple TV plugged into my av receiver. I use one Logitech remote to control everything, why would I ever plug my cable box into the X1 instead of my receiver?

Only to change channels for live TV. That's it.

Setting recordings or playing back shows would require menu navigation and it wouldn't know what order your shows are on. Basically impossible.

The only way to do it would be via your home network. TiVo series 3 and some other boxes allow pretty full access to guide data, your recorded shows, season passes etc via LAN. So eg right now on my iPad I can view and change my season passes, start a show playing on my TV, play/pause/FF etc. and that's in the UK on virgin media TiVo. I think sky in the UK has similar support and several more boxes in the US too.

MS could integrate that and it'd be a huge jump forward from what they do now. I hope they do, and the only reason they haven't talked about it is because their software is still early, and it'll come sometime next year.

Definitely the XBO, are you kidding? That's the whole point--they have so many multimedia features, gamers were mad they weren't focusing on just games. Sony easily will not have as many multimedia features---but it's a gaming box, that just so happens to have cool things like music services and netflix, not a multimedia box that just so happens to play games

Ii think Xbox One will dominate in terms of multimedia the next generation, they already have many of the big players in the entertainment world locked down on their current system imagine what they will bring in the next. As I'm saying this i do believe the PlayStation 4 will also bring in many of the entertainment apps on board but I'm speaking from the last generation and i think Microsoft has done a pretty good job compared to Sony.

Speaking of hdmi in. Does anyone make a over the air receiver that would send that signal to a hdmi in device? i would never buy cable but having an over the air signal go through the xbox would be nice.
Will the one be a media center extender?
doubt it, wmc is pretty much dead.

Just because MS want it to be, doesn't mean it will be. Isn't PS3 more popular than 360 for Netflix? Why do you have to pay for XBL Gold to access free Hulu catchup services?

If you're a gamer wanting some media, then gold isn't a barrier as much, but if your focus is media and you don't care about multiplayer, you'd be pissed having to pay $60 a year to watch Netflix - that's adding more than 50% to the cost of a Netflix subscription

Yeah ps3 is number one netflix box.

The one that lets me use Netflix and Hulu Plus without needing to pay upfront

Yep exactly. I recently let my Gold subscription lapse. I own a 360 and a PS3. Guess which one is a terrible media device now? The 360 barely does anything. It doesn't do Netflix, it doesn't do Amazon, it doesn't do shit compared to my PS3.

The PS4 and XBO will end up the same way. non-gamers should not have to pay $5 a month to access their $10 per month Netflix. PS4 will be the better multimedia device for your living room because everyone who buys one has access to all of its multimedia features for no additional cost.

I'm betting Skype will be behind a paywall. Will be interesting if PS4 also gets Skype and those same "video calls from your living room" can be accomplished by both with their respective camera systems but one ends up free.

Yes. Microsoft literally has been moneyhatting app exclusivity

If whatever HBO Go deal ends this year then perhaps Sony could get in contact with HBO to develop an app

I bought a 3-month XBL subscription just so I could use HBO Go, if PS4 gets it...

And I don't even play multiplayer on 360 anymore

You mean both Microsoft and Sony are moneyhatting app exclusivity? NFL Sunday Ticket is currently exclusive to the Playstation 3. While it sucks, it's a business practice that isn't tied to any one company.

The answer will vary person to person. Xbone has broader appeal but if you're only streaming Netflix and hulu either box will do. But one is cheaper, smaller and won't require you connect a camera to it.

I don't think many people will be interested in a 400-500 dollar Netflix machine anyway.

Xbox one has HBO Go so I can watch my Game Of thrones, you can do multi-screen from skype to music to watching movies. With the built in Kinect your standard HDTV will have voice controls. MS designed the Xbox one to be the premier multimedia console, so really the one is the obvious choice.
