PS4 firmware 4.50 add Boost Mode for PS4 Pro.

Can we get a thread that very loudly exclaims that "BOOST MODE DOESN'T OVERCLOCK THE PRO OR INCREASE FRAMERATES IN PRO-SUPPORTED GAMES"?

Only partially kidding, because there's a lot of people not using their brains, here. The description of the feature itself makes it clear that it's only for games that were released before the Pro was even a consideration.

at least we haven't gotten people complaining that there is no boost mode for standard ps4 users and that they are getting locked out so that sony can sell pros ;)

Why do a lot of people get upset when people jokingly refer to it as 'Beast' mode? I think it's a dumb, funny name, why would anyone get salty over that lol. It's childishness makes it hilarious to me.

Yep. Not sure. It was clearly intended to be called beast mode. Sony just didn't want to be the ones to do it. It's our obligation to do it for them. ;)

I hadn't planned on getting a PS4 Pro since I don't have a 4K TV yet...but wow, I think this does it for me.

I actually had just ordered a Pro a week before this beta dropped. Now I'm even happier, I wanted the Pro for FFXV, TLG, and upcoming titles like NieR: Automata and Horizon but now I can go back and finish Bloodborne with a better framerate too.

Going Pro was the best decision I made this gen so far.

It's dumb, but Yakuza Zero almost feels too smooth? Spinning the camera around is now a very fast experience. Losing the tearing is great, too.

Just Cause 3 runs better than it ever has.
Shame it's still not great.

For those who've asked, I messed around with MGSV and didn't notice any difference. Makes sense, since that was smooth going as-is.

Can't wait to give Dragon Quest Heroes a go.

Still looking for impressions on Hand of Fate and Ziggurat.

Both had a tendency to chug, and they're both some of my favorite indies.

I'm still quite amazed how this one feature has suddenly made PS4 Pro so popular but Sony clearly made the right choice to allow performance to be boosted on older games too, along with external HDD support.

All we need now is for Sony to fully embrace PS1 and PS2 classics, then PS4 / PS4 Pro will be as near perfect as a console can be.

Just bought a PS4 Pro after this news.

I was going to get another PS4 anyway for my sister, but after hearing all the good stuff about the Pro, i just bought that, and i'm gonna give her my other one.

Since I missed the beta I tried my Google luck for when the 4.50 is scheduled to be released officially, but only found "later this year" from reputable sources. Do we know how long it usually takes for betas to go live? Sorry if already asked. :)

That would be heavenly. But we know that won't happen because money :( You'd think it would make them more money buying the current consoles now as opposed to a few remastered digital retro versions.

720p is more than enough. Especially a set that takes 1080p signal and downscales it.

Depends on what kind of 720p if it is a plasma. Later on Plasma tv's stopped the 1366x768 and 1280x720 and went the cheap route with 1024x768. They still called it 720p but its really worse.

True but I'm actually surprised they haven't released more classics on PSN, to sell. They started too release a few PS2 games but then it seemed like they gave up on the idea.

So just to confirm, this is real? I see on Page 1 someone mentioned OP should have added rumor, but if there are 87 pages, and videos in the OP, I am assuming it has been confirmed 100% real?

If so, fucking awesome.

Yes it is :) I'm using it :)

Just thinking, this Boost Mode is fantastic, but obviously it's held back in some respects because no devs knew it was going to exist and never programmed their games for it, so the differences can vary dramatically from game to game from no difference to significant ones.

I'm liking the concept of the Pro more and more now and I hope this is something copied with the eventual PS5. Except: Make it known, even if only to devs, that this is going to happen, let them design their games to be able to effectively take advantage of extra power down the line. It should just be in the DNA of the PlayStation from now on.

It is sort of taking console gaming yet closer to PC gaming.. but I feel we still keep the benefits that consoles bring, so long as the games are designed diligently enough not to screw up when they get taken forward onto the next updated version of the platform. It's nice having that premium experience for those who want console simplicity but also don't wanted be limited to what is the most consumer friendly price point for the base system. It's still more powerful and impressive than whatever you could build for the same price in the PC world. It really is incredible value to be honest.

This probably being asked, but Witcher 3 finally playable?
As said Witcher 3 with the latest patch is already playable on base PS4.
With boost mode on PS4 Pro people reported more stable framerate in busy areas, faster loading times and inventory and map slightly faster too etc more improved overall.
I chucked on Witcher 3 last night and had to download a couple of updates.

Now it runs really smoothly, but the sharpening is very intense. Don't know if CDPR added this in a later update.
Sharpening seems fine here, maybe check the post-processing options in the game settings

All the devs would have to do is make and uncapped framerate option. as long as the physics or something like that isn't tied to framerate then it should be an easy patch.

To be honest, I could be talking out of my arse, but outside of the initial leaked slides, Sony never communicated any Pro requirements for newer games. I can not guarantee on any of the following games, since I'm not willing to buy them myself, but I don't believe games like Skylight Freerange, Her Majesty's Spiffing, and Knee Deep have Pro support. But giving these are all lower (or lowest) tier digital titles, perhaps there is more leeway for that category.
I do agree that small-scale games are definite candidates not to have major improvements on Pro. But keep in mind there's a difference between "Pro support" and "major improvements". Even some games with immense resources behind them, like The Division and Overwatch, have implemented Pro support that barely alters their performance profile. It's quite possible that Sony mandates Pro support now, but not in the sense of requiring specific improvements over the standard PS4. Such support would probably not be easily visible in small-scale games, which as you agree are basically not tested by anyone anyway.

And logically, this is the only kind of support Sony would realistically mandate. Historically, no platform holder has been able to demand certain performance levels from the whole array of developers on their devices, and that's even less likely now with independent publishing. But developing games with all the Pro's hardware resources in mind--even if they aren't actually being deployed--is a positive for Sony. Because it means the game will bump itself up, should they alter the resources available through OS slimming or other measures.

I was under the impression all games moving forward will get a Pro mode. Boost mode does not equal Pro mode. Boost mode would only apply for older games. Wouldn't it be kind of a waste to release a patch that just unlocks the frame rate without properly implementing Pro mode and all of it's benefits? I guess. If I understand Boost mode is not a surface level feature and is really just for older non "Pro" titles.

Won't it have pro support anyway?
It was releasing in Japan in September before the Pro's release. And given Yakuza didn't get a Pro patch (also an older game released in Japan first that just got released here) I doubt Persona 5 will get one when it releases here. Would be nice though.

Did anyone test out a batch of Omega Force games? They tend to unlocked framerates and I'm interested in seeing performance reports for Arslan, Dragon Quest Heroes, Samurai Warriors, Warriors Orochi 3 or DW8XL.

This. And since it won't be seeing a Pro update some Japaneses gaffers (or ones that imported it) could tell us if the game benefits fromm the boost mode. (loading screens or even more stable framerate if the game had some dips with i don't really think it being a PS3 port had.)

I did this morning. Get into the light.
Gonna do it for sure. Spent the evening packing up my launch Xbone and launch PS4 to sell. They're off to UPS tomorrow, then I'm ordering a Pro.

Still waiting for slightly lower prices on 65"+ 4K TVs but in the meantime I'll enjoy boost mode.

The ultimate insult now would be if Sony pulled it from the 4.50 final build, heh...
