PS4-Gaf: review your launch titles

Killzone Shadow Fall (single-player only): 6.5/10 - Gorgeous; questionable level/gameplay design; great combat
Resogun: 7/10 - Great shooter; wish it had digital controls
NFS Rivals: 8/10 - Great everything (after the patches); AllDrive is neat
Warframe: 7/10 - This is so weird... I should hate everything about this game, but I don't. Voice chat is iffy.

KZSF: 8/10 come for the mind blowing visuals, stay for the multiplayer. Seriously I've been amazed at the visualsplaying campaign, I love it.

BF4: 7/10 mainly because I get disconnected half the time I'm playing online. Would be higher if it didn't have connection issues. Can't rely on being in a full game!

AC4: 8/10 some of the gameplay is tiresome. Follow this guy while eavesdropping, etc etc. The stealth is really annoying STILL. Can they just add a stealth mode? Similar to the Arkham games where you crouch and can move behind enemies? It's super frustrating that I have to walk behind people and I don't know or can't tell when they'll see me...

Resogun: 9/10 super fun and addicting, nuff said

Blacklight Retribution: 0/10 can't even find any games online, nothing to play

I haven't finished either of these games yet so I only have preliminary scores based on what I've played so far.

Killzone - 6.9/10
It's very pretty but the story isn't anything exciting. Not terrible, but not great. It's about what you'd expect. Plays fine. The menu UI is the worst I've personally used in a long while, though. I got it purely for the graphics, to be honest. Gotta try out Next Gen. It isn't a let down in the graphics department, and the multiplayer is kind of fun.

Black Flag - 8/10
From what I've played, it isn't revolutionizing the brand or anything, but it's solid. The main character is more interesting than Connor was, but I'm not far enough into it yet to know if I'll end up really liking him. It's off to a good start so far, but it better escalate the story soon. I'm definitely having more fun with this than Killzone, even if Killzone is the more "NextGen" game. In the end, gameplay and story are bigger than graphics. However, I am really enjoying hte 1080p.
They need to revamp their system, though. It's showing its age a bit now. I get frustrated way too often that my character won't listen to what I'm trying to make him do.

I won't rate Resogun because it's not my type of game and it would feel a bit unfair to give a game a low score because it's not my preferred genre.

Warframe is hard to rate because it's free. I'm a bit iffy on it, but I can't argue with free. It's worth trying at least once to see if you like it, but I probably won't be playing it.

I can't even get Blacklight to work.

You guys think Knack has sleeper potential?

I'm looking at that and Crimson Dragon as possibilities for this launch. I can't think of a launch lineup that doesn't have at least one of these kinds of releases that professional reviewers simply don't get.

Knack is definitely more in that boat. Knack definitely has more of the "some people just don't get it" vibe. Crimson Dragon just seems to be universally called weak.

Black Flag 8.5 Amazing pirate simulator that still has a lot of the flaws and problems from the old Assassin's Creed games like ultra repetitive story missions and buggy running.

Killzone 5 Single player, gorgeous but incredibly bad story and very generic shooter. 8 Multiplayer, very fun with loads of customization but not really anything special and I still prefer Killzone 2 and 3.

Resogun 8 Good game but it is no Geometry Wars

Contrast 7 Very cool ideas but quite buggy.

Battlefield 4 0 The score is based on the fact that they shipped a broken game that erases my single player data and crashes on the menu.

Killzone: (campaign) umm...like 6/10. Based mostly on graphics and the floaty space-like missions. I completed the game yesterday and felt it ended very, very abruptly. I seriously said "that's it?" out loud as the
real
credits began to roll.

I hope there will be DLC for the campaign, because the story was too short and needs more explaining!

The MP is pretty good, but with the brightness (too much sunlight and cant see shit) on some of the maps, mixed with the lack of Team chat (or any chat outside of being in a party) is really stupid. I mean, there is no teamwork at all. You can't call out to other players about enemy locations, and the overall silence while playing TDM or Search & Destroy makes me not want to play.

I havent finished any of the launch game I got but I love Contrast so far,I know I will love AC4 because I played the first few hours on the PS3 and I liked Killzone, until the dreadful free fall sections so I give this one a huge thumb down for the single player...did not try multiplayer yet...need to try Resogun next.

The menu UI is the worst I've personally used in a long while, though.
Really? While it took a minute to get used to, I actually really like the layout of using the shoulder buttons to tab.

Visually it should be bigger though (text is a little small in general in the game ... this coming from someone using a 60" TV)

Is NFS:Rivals really THAT good? I'm trying to figure out my third Xbone game to pick up and it's basically boiled down to NFS and BF/CoD/Forza. Since BF is broken and I'm tired of CoD it really is between NFS and Forza and I'm not huge into racing games so I don't know which one is more friendly towards non-race fans. I already have AC4 and NBA2k14 for my PS4. Thoughts?

Wich game do you people recommend the most to buy at PS3 and upgrade later to PS4?
Assassins Creed 4 (that seems an amazing AC, but not really next-gen look even at PS4)
or
Battlefield 4 (seems very next-gen, but online still not working beside it will be fixed soon; but ill get Killzone SF, thats another FPS game)

I really dont know what to do! T-T
But both is not an option because Ill buy Killzone and Knack also. Too expensive for me to get 4 games by now (its already a pain to buy 3 by now).

Edit:
Nvm..... got BF4.

NBA Live demo - 1.3 - It's nice that the PS4 plays PS2 games.

I don't have any ps4 games :(

Still pondering about launch games, so: If I loved AC1 and kinda liked the first parts of AC2, but then felt it was too linear for me in comparison to 1 (like, straight up go-there-then-there gameplay, quest after quest, no thinking/planning for assassinations etc) and didn't even play the following parts because of that - would you say I'd like IV?

I only heard good about it, but nothing at all regarding being taken by the hand or actual assassinations and assassination "preperation"/hint collecting.

ACIV: 9.7/10

Knack: 8.7/10

KZ:SF: 8.0/10

Warframe: 7.3/10

Blacklight: 7.7/10

DC Universe: 5.9/10

Resogun: 10/10

Contrast: 7.1/10

DCUO still boring eh? I have heard a lot of people saying that it's been improved a lot with the expansions and improvements over the PS3 version. Did you play the PS3 version and how does it stack up?

Killzone SF: Love the world and character design and gameplay mechanics. I would agree that some of the level design could use improvement, especially in the latter portion of the game. Haven't really played multiplayer yet. SP Campaign Only Score: 8.5

NBA2k14: Love everything about this game except the obnoxious My2k stuff. Graphics, oh my gudness...gameplay is great, as usual. Score 9.0

Battlefield 4: Only played single player so far. Game crapped out on me once during the campaign. Sometimes I find the controls to be frustrating for aiming, regardless of the sensitivity setting I have it set to (aim assist is of course disabled as well). SP campaign is generally pretty fun and has some nice graphics, though not as good as Killzone SF in either department. Multiplayer was completely broken when I attempted to play it. So SP Score: 8.0 and MP score: 0 (for now).....I hear the game has been fixed. So, I will update my impressions when I finally get to play MP.

Resogun: Awesome time-tested shmup gameplay + amazing graphics. Score: 9.3

Contrast: Haven't played much, but gameplay concepts seem interesting. Score (so far): 7.5

Resogun - 8/10
Flower - 8/10
Contrast - 7.5/10
Knack - 7/10
Killzone - 6/10

I've had fun with every game so far but I still haven't been blown away. The most fun game I've played so far is Contrast.

I give NFS an 11. No, 12!

FIFA is fun but haven't played much yet. I haven't bought it in years so the nuance of incremental improvement is lost on me. Slick and smooth.

KZ, only played campaign. Early but it hasn't grabbed me yet and the weird checkpoint/save system is infuriating. I loved KZ 2's campaign.

DCUO still boring eh? I have heard a lot of people saying that it's been improved a lot with the expansions and improvements over the PS3 version. Did you play the PS3 version and how does it stack up?

I would have to really want to play it to play it. I just don't have the patience to deal with an MMO in general, especially one with clunky controls. I did not play the PS3 version, but I assume its pretty similar.

I did not enjoy it but YMMV.

I don't think I've played anything enough to provide confident ratings, but I'm leaning in this direction so far:

Killzone - People with hate me for this, but I'm becoming increasingly convinced that GG just doesn't know how to make a great single player campaign. I haven't liked any of them. However, I've had a ton of fun with multiplayer so far. (7/10)

NBA2k14 -- Seems to be the best in the series so far. Gameplay and visuals are top notch, but as people have said, the menus are clusterfuck. (8/10)

Still need to play Resogun and Battlefield 4.

The Multiplayer is slowly putting its hooks into me. If you get into a decent party its pretty dang fun.

In the order I've played them:

BF4: 9/10 when it worked for me, 1/10 right now unplayable

KZ/SF: 5/10 single player, 7/10 multiplayer

Resogun: 8/10, Great multiplayer fun after slowly becoming bored with single player

Knack 7.5/10, Greatly underappreciated and deserves a way better score than it was getting by journalists.

DCUO: 8/10, Never touched this game on PC nor ps3, was greatly surprised this game looked so good and played so well. Only playing free at the moment but considering dropping $30 on the DLC bundle.

CoD/G: 7/10 Singleplayer, 6.5/10 multiplayer, never played sp CoD games, this one was okay considering what it is. MP maps are too big, i end up just going back to KZ after a few matches.

DCUO still boring eh? I have heard a lot of people saying that it's been improved a lot with the expansions and improvements over the PS3 version. Did you play the PS3 version and how does it stack up?

I play MMO's pretty frequently when they release, this one took me by surprise that I liked it so much. Really no reason not to try it since its free but I think it plays really well.

Assassin's Creed IV: 9
I thought I was done with this franchise after the disappointing Revelations and AC III, but I'm having an absolute blast with Black Flag. It may be my favorite in the series.

Killzone (single player, up to Chapter 8): 6
The first half of the game is pretty enjoyable, but then it takes a serious nose dive. Baffling design choices make for a tedious, frustrating, mind-numbing experience. I'm all for mixing up pacing and scenarios for the sake of variety, but these levels are just not fun or satisfying at all.

You guys make me want to buy AC4.

I HATED AC3, loved 2 and brohood but got pretty burned on the series after brotherhood. Would I like AC4?

Wow is ACIV really that good? Everyone is giving it a 9.

I'm dangerously close to just stopping at what I'm guessing is the 20% mark of the story and giving it a 2/10. It's the same tired AC game with every single flaw that each game had. It's really no better than 3.

I'm not much of an Assassins Creed fan, and I havn't played one since Rev, but I'm constantly hearing it gets way better as it goes.

Killzone: 8.5/10 - Damn thing gives me a headache because of the POV but it sure is pretty. Haven't touched multiplayer yet but I hear that is really fun.

Injustice: 8.5/10 - Just a 1080p port with all of the DLC. Nice but it's the same damn game I played a few months ago, but still fun as hell (especially to stream).

NFS Rivals: 8.5/10 - Overall solid. It's really pretty to look at and being chased from the cops/chasing opponents is exciting.

Resogun: 9/10 - Who knew that such a simple game could be one of the best? Seriously so good.

I'm also about 20% into the story of ACIV. But that is equivalent to about 25 hours of gameplay the way I'm doing it. Someone said that the game is 60% land and 40% on water. I'm determined to prove them wrong. It's been like 80% on my boat so far.

Edit: Essentially I'm playing this like GTA:Pirate.

Play the whole game and you'll see. It's miles better than AC3, one of the best games of 2013.

I find that really hard to believe unless the core gameplay is going to get better all of a sudden, or they stop making me chase 6 billion different collectibles that serve no real purpose to the game. They haven't done either one of those in 6 years so I don't expect it to magically happen now.

I have not played Assassin's Creed since the 2nd installment. You guys make me want to pick up IV over Battlefield.

Playing through Killzone single player and I'll rate it a 7/10 so far. Some of the story is eh but its ok, beautiful environment, and gameplay is pretty solid except the Owl layout. (Why can't you just swipe to select a mode then swipe again to send out the owl? I found myself doing this because it just seems to work better when the damn highlighted icon is right there on your reticule. Pressing L1 makes no sense to me.) Overall, it's a good launch/showcase game for the PS4.

Resogun has a learning curve that can be unforgivable on higher difficulties but it is pretty fun arcade game. Nothing more imo. 8/10

Warframe has no damn tutorial for something that involves a lot. It's baffling, at least to me. I thought the game would look a lot better too considering (PS4) trailers and how the developers were saying how easy it was to program for the PS4. The game does look nice but I think it could look better, but the learning curve is frustrating. 6/10

Thinking about one of these for my next game.
  • ACIV: Black Flag
  • NBA 2K14
  • Battlefield 4
  • Need for Speed

Quote me on a suggestion guys? Thanks.

That's the reason I didn't pick it up in the first place haha, not a fan. I was just repeating what I was told, if you like Assassins Creed this is one of the better ones, however it isn't my cup of tea.

Haven't touched bf4 because its broken, killzone has taken a backseat to warframe.

Warframe is a solid 8/10 if you like space ninjas... And gridning.

BF4 should be good to go next week (hopefully), highly recommended (again, assuming they have their freaking patch fix the issues)

need for speed rivals 9/10 - I'm directly comparing this to nfs: most wanted (critereon game) here, and basically it took everything most wanted did right and fixed all its problems. The game has a solid challenge, a much better/rewarding progression, plenty of straight aways and open areas, emp's and add ons you can put on your car to disable other cars, and you can play as the cops with its own mission line. In fact thinking about it its almost like a sweet combination of nfs: most wanted + nfs: hot pursuit.

AC4 8/10: The story doesnt seem like anything special but the combat is fun and sailing the ship around an open world setting is quite amazing.. if only they had ships like this in the elder scrolls games :p

So is Warframe getting extremely overrated on here for being a free launch game or has it been vastly improved since the PC version came out? Such a repetitive bore that was, and the gameplay itself was average/below average.

Oh damn, AC:IV based on Gaf against Battlefield 4. Just don't know. :(

Yes. It's a decent F2P but I would never pay a retail price for it. I'm disappointed actually because I was hyped.

Killzone - 7/10. A strong start to the campaign and a surprisingly good multiplayer are marred by the second half of the campaign, which ranges from boring to outright abysmal. The lack of in-game chat and a party system in a multiplayer-centric game that's releasing more than 9 years after Halo 2 came out and changed what people expect from a shooter is pathetic. Open levels in the campaign often feel as though they were designed by people who had no idea how to design open levels. Tip: If you let players go three different ways, acknowledge that they might not have made a beeline to the objective marker and design your mission objectives around that. A bunker should not repopulate with another twenty enemies five minutes after already clearing it once just because there's suddenly a waypoint inside.

Knack - I'm only on Chapter 4 or so, so I don't feel like I can score this...but it oscillates seemingly every minute between being pretty all right and a total chore to play, where animations seem to not match up to your character's actual state and you realize that you're just fighting the same three enemy archetypes over and over and over. This has resulted in a lot of "wait, how did that hit me?" moments. Also, Knack as a character is atrocious. He is the embodiment of every shitty Dreamworks smirk.

Battlefield - Broken/10. The state this game launched in is unacceptable. That it continues to crash if you try to bring up Battlelog after a match is ridiculous. That it doesn't have a proper party system in 20-fucking-13 is shameful. That there isn't a section of the main menu that you can use to change your loadouts, instead having to either do it in the middle of a match or through Battlelog because hey, convenience to the player is less important than pushing our site and Premium subs, is disgusting. When the game works it's incredible, but an incredibly strong underlying core is marred by all of the bullshit layered on top. I would not recommend it to anyone in the state that it's in, even after the recent patches.

Resogun - 9/10. When the announcer says "Armageddon." in that cold, detached robot voice, it's just about perfect.

Contrast - I'm not very far in and I think that'll probably stay that way. It seemed incredibly simple for the first hour or so and the story isn't doing it for me.

Assassin's Creed IV: Awesome. Really well done and if you liked the 'good' ones in the series you should love this (if you liked the sailing in ACIII). While the collectathons can get tedious (I loathe the Shanty collection) they actually are still really fun. You just have to take it in stride. Every time I play it I seem to be playing a "different" game. One time I'm just doing assassins, others I'm collecting and not doing any fights, then others I'm just sailing around collecting treasure or attacking ships. It's just 'fun' to do almost anything in the game. Combat is hit and miss for me, I suck so I can't say "it's boring" as I die still, so it keeps me on my toes. And unlike everybody else on GAF that I've read their impressions, I love the stealth missions. Hiding in the bushes running from area to area is awesome. It's more like old school Splinter Cell where you had to run and find shadows.

Killzone: Great. I am only a few levels in and it looks fantastic but it really needs more direction ... not so much in the levels, but I don't honestly know what I'm even doing except heading towards waypoints and shooting dudes. If it had a coherent story or something, it would be better. I have never been a fan of the Killzone games although giving each of them a shot. This is the first that I've enjoyed.

NBA2K14: Good. Intense grind (read; too much) for improving MyCareer and the menus ARE ALL OVER THE FUCKING PLACE. Luckily, it's an amazing basketball game ... they just hid it under a shitty grind and terrible menu system. Seriously, it is that bad. Fantastic on the court, absolutely shitty off the court, like a lot of NBA players.

Resogun: Fun, but not really my thing.
Contrast: Cool idea, but didn't get it into, might give it a shot down the road once my other games need a break from me.

Did I mention the grind and shitty menus in NBA2k14? Honestly, for me (as I haven't played the past ones all that much but I've read they've taken some options out that players miss) if the menus didn't suck and I didn't get smoked without grinding hours for points to make my player better ... it would probably be a 9.8 game. It's that good at the basketball.

Thinking about one of these for my next game.
  • ACIV: Black Flag
  • NBA 2K14

Quote me on a suggestion guys? Thanks.

ACIV is amazing. I really think it shows off the PS4 even though people bitch about "last gen textures" it really pops on my HDTV. Not as good looking as Killzone but up there.

It's also a lot of fun. If you enjoyed 2 and didn't play 3 or Brohood or Revelations, you'll feel pretty 'fresh' with all the things in the game. Story is meh, sailing is awesome and the "adventure" feel is definitely there. When I went into my first storm in the ship trying to outrun another while my health was really low was close to the same feeling I got riding the horse to view the city in AC1 for the firs time.

NBA is great, but be wary of what I say above. If you just want a game to pick up and play with friends you can set sliders and choose teams, but the MyGM and MyCareer are buried underneath a grind and terrible menus.

damn, because of all the postive impressions. Just bought AssCreed4. :) I'm at the PC, I have standby PS4 is grabbing it... heading downstairs to check in a bit.

Resogun. 8/10. really fun. took a bit of working out - but I think the way to play it is on the harder difficulty settings.

NFS rivals. 8.6/10 been a while since a car game has gripped me and its super fun. great visuals.

I'm loving next gen

So far I have,

Cod ghosts, assassins creed 4, resogun, contrast, flower. I haven't played any of these trying to save them for later.

Battlefield 4 : only played single player so far and I would say it was a 5.5 nothing special almost felt like a choire to me.

Knack: deffinitley under rated I would say a solid 7.5 it was challenging at times but never felt unfair. It was fun to play and the boss battles were great.

Killzone: I would say so far it's a 7. It's really nice to look at and plays fine; however, it is boring at times and the story is nothing special.

NFS 9/10 Surprise hit of the launch for me, can't get enough of its intense gameplay and crazy encounters with randoms online.

Killzone 9/10 Took me a bit to get it but once all the mechanics clicked I love it.

ACIV 8/10 This hasn't hooked me yet, so far it doesn't have that next-gen gam play feel of NFS or Killzone.

Resogun 7/10 A solid distraction in short bursts.
