PS4-Gaf: review your launch titles

Hey all, this is my first post after a few months of lurking, account finally approved!

After having picked up my PS4 at the Best Buy down the street from my apartment (I work for Best Buy, so I kept tabs on the process in our employee news) I took advantage of the Gamers Unlocked program and picked up Killzone and Assassins Creed IV. I already had Battlefield 4 for my PS4, so I paid the 10 bucks to snag the upgrade.

As to my ratings...

I played Killzone first, and I was blown away by the graphics, how smooth everything seemed. The gunplay was weird at first (Since I played PS3 so extensively, and I wasn't adjusted to the R2/L2 switch), but I quickly adapted, and I had a good time with it. I need to play more so I can see the rest of the story, and hopefully get more MP in, but I'm thus far impressed, if not truly amazed. 8/10

Now, AC IV has been a time-suck for me, in a good way. I can be a completionist when the mood strikes, and AC really did a good job at getting me in, 100%'ing every area I went to. I have already maxed out all the upgrades on the Jackdaw and Edward, not to mention the trophies for visiting every location on the map, haha. I enjoy Edward as a character, and seeing him get some sense knocked into him. While this is my first real foray into the AC series, I watched my best friend play through the others, so I have a good awareness of Altair, Ezio, and Connor's stories. Definitely enjoyed this game, and I'm finishing up the main story tonight. Still deciding if I'm going to do the mulitplayer for the Plat. 9/10

Resogun has been just... a blast. A friend and I hooked up party chat and did Co-op for several hours the other night. We had a totally great time flying around, shooting enemies, saving humans, and trying not to get obliterated. Admittedly we need to get better, to do something beyond Rookie, but we had a great time. Gorgeous, smooth, and just a really fun time. Solid mechanics, interesting premise (circular instead of side scrolling or total sphere), great stuff. 9/10

Battlefield 4 I'll keep short and sweet. It's got everything that the PS3 version has, but better across the board. Runs smoother, looks so much better, everything feels tighter... Especially on the DS4, which is fantastic. This is what helped get me used to using R2/L2 instead. With the hotfix, I was finally able to get in some 32/32 conquest maps, and sheesh, it's truly massive. Here's to getting better. 8.5/10

I haven't played Contrast yet, and I only gave a cursory playthrough to Warframe, but I plan to put time into each of them. Otherwise, I'm just really happy with my PS 4 experience, though I really, really want some JRPG love. C'mon Sony!

(Also, I'd like to say that Remote Play is awesome, and my Vita just got another great way to use it. The only game I haven't done much of that with is BF4, just because it's a bit too chaotic, I found, for Multiplayer purposes.)

Killzone: 5/10. It's distinctly average, but does look brilliant.

Resogun: 8/10. One of the best arcade shooters I've played in a long time. Lots of replay value and it looks fantastic.

Contrast: 3/10. Not a fan. Boring, unremarkable, rough around the edges and the wall merging gimmick was done a million times better by Zelda: Link Between Worlds.

Also, to clarify, I use the entire 1-10 scale. 10 is Ocarina of Time/Mario 64 type of masterpiece, 5 is average and 1 is Superman 64/ET 2600 level of shit.

Knack and Killzone looked like rentals to me, NBA2K as well unless you ball a lot

Lego Marvel could be fun co-op

Resogun is high on my GOTY list

KZ: 7/10 - So good looking, so very average. MP bumps it up one point.
AssCreed: 9/10 - yarr, would buy again
Resogun: 9/10 - God damn son
NFS: 8/10 - Surprise of the year
FIFA: 7/10 - You know what you get
Flower: 5/10 - Confirmed beutiful, confirmed booring

Reso gun - 8/10 great game overall
KSFS - 7/10 not played MP yet tho
BF4 - 5/10 since Mp is broken, when it works though 8/10
Lego marvel 8/10
contrast 6/10 good puzzle, but buggy
Warframe 6/10
War thunder 6/10
Blacklight 5/10

My biggest problem, i need new tv

You know what? The day after getting my PS4, I thought "oh man, I could rent a few titles" just like I did with my N64 on launch, and my GameCube, and my 360.

...and then I remembered all the Blockbusters in the UK have shut down (ones remaining only have a week left), and there's no alternative here.

Aw shit.

Killzone Shadow Fall: 8/10. Decent, but average Single Player. Looks stunning. Multiplayer is suprisingly good.

Call of Duty Ghosts: 7/10. I actually liked the campaign in this one. The multiplayer is what brings down the score. Terrible maps (only 3-4 decent ones). They're too big and there are too many routes to take. The spawn system is also the worst in CoD history which is quite the feat. Also, the guard dogs have a higher HP than the soldiers. It takes 6-7 bullets to kill a guard dog. The killstreaks are quite balanced though.

Resogun: 9/10. Not my type of game but holy hell does this game flow well. Really polished as well.

Contrast: 8/10. A fun puzzler with some annoying bugs. I didn't mind the short length (3 hours) though.

That was my plan too so I've had to make the most of Warframe and War Thunder,

NFS: Rivals - 8 - gorgeous visuals, looks beautiful on frostbite. Really addictive gameplay but somewhat fails in its attempts to have a cohesive online single player.

Killzone Shadow Fall - 6 - sets the new standard for art design in video games. The environments are immediately evocative and gorgeously rendered. The campaign starts strong and then goes to shit at the mid-way point, continuing to slump lower and lower till the games over. Seriously it is an unplayable mess at times, a broken fps with no sense of what it wants to be.

Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag - 9 - wicked game. Plays fantastic despite the Ubisoft UI that I used to despise so much after 3, looks gorgeous with the dynamic weather system and such scope! Nothing is more baller than sailing the vast ocean to the sounds of your crew singing shanties. An immersive historical epic denied greatness by its unwillingness to shed the franchises vexing idiosyncrasies.

Resogun - 8 - DOPE LITTLE GAME!!!

Now that I've finished AC4- 2/10. I shouldn't even have to explain myself. If you've played any of the other AC games you already know everything that's wrong with this series, but if you haven't then I guess I can try to explain quickly.

- There is no combat or platforming, there is a press the counter button then watch your guy auto kill 5 dudes in a row button and a hold the trigger to auto run across anything in sight button.

- Ship sailing and combat is not fleshed out enough to sustain an entire 30 hour game. Like the rest of the game it requires no thought and you'll have to try to lose to pull that off against any of the ships barring the optional legendary ones. You can take on 3 man o wars and a bunch of smaller ships at once with a moderately upgraded ship and you'll win if you're not totally incompetent. When there's no challenge or depth at all then it becomes a chore. A chore you have to do over and over again for 20+ hours.

- Collectibles are pointless, but it's an Ubisoft open world game so you knew that already. There are a billion chests and animus fragments and a few other kinds of items thrown on your map and the majority of them do nothing or give you a few hundred pieces of whatever the money is. What's funny is the game will tell you a chest gave you specific items but there is no inventory in the game so you didn't actually get any items, you just got more money. It's like they tried to add the illusion that opening 4000 chests full of nothing but money was fun.

- Because every core mechanic is so shallow and streamlined there is no point to the upgrade system for Kenway. You do have to upgrade the ship but there's no need to craft extra pouches or buy new swords or pistols. When you can counter and auto kill most of the enemies in the game, then use that to chain kill the others, you don't need more powerful weapons. But if you do want to upgrade you can buy the strongest swords in the game within a couple hours and you'll be set for the rest of the 30 hour game.

- Despite the illusion that there is ship exploration, there really isn't. Everything is thrown on to your map and it even tells you how much is on each island and exactly what is on the island (for example it'll say 6 chests, 3 animus fragments, 1 mayan statue, etc). Sure you could turn off HUD elements in the menu but the game isn't designed for real exploration, nor are the rewards you get meaningful as I already explained, so you're just setting yourself up for a pain in the ass when there's no reason to.

This was by far the worst AAA series to come out of last generation and somehow it seems to get a bit worse with each yearly iteration. Unfortunately it's now staining the new generation of consoles too. We could wish watch dogs was here instead but we all know that's going to turn out exactly the same.

Killzone: 6/10 Loved KZ2 and even KZ3 MP, but just couldn't get into this game. It felt like something was missing from the multiplayer.

Resogun: 8/10 Fun game, but doesn't interest me that much.

Battlefield: 8/10 After giving up on KZ:SF, I picked up BF4 and having a much more enjoyable time. Has only crashed on me once and seems pretty close to the PC version.

Killzone : beautiful and frustrating in equal measure. Bad pacing and occasionally annoying AI means I'll probably trade it in once I've finished the campaign.

NFS:Rivals : I prefer most wanted. There seems to be no way to simply explore, and the lack of a city is disappointing - I liked finding jump spots etc and it just doesn't feel the same in this game. Bloody good looking though.

Knack : really enjoying it. I thought it'd be pretty mindless but the variety of enemies and the relatively high difficulty (you need to pay attention) keeps things moving nicely. It isn't mind glowingly beautiful or anything, but it is surprisingly fun.

Lego marvel : bit disappointing. I like lego games, but this is too often confusing (mr fantastic qualifies as a web slinger?). Looks like the PC version so technically it is a decent upgrade over Ps3. Will still complete it, but it'll need to pick up a lot to make me want to go for 100%

ACIV : not played much. Looks nice, but I spend a lot of time looking at the mini map to show me where I should be going. But really I'm not far enough in to give any impression

Resogun : great fun and has that 'one more go' thing going on. I'm not great at these games anymore but it still keeps me coming back for more punishment

Flower : so gorgeous. Only done he first level but will definitely try and replay this on PS4. Gyro works well

Also have FIFA and contrast which I haven't even played once yet (upgraded FIFA from PS3 version for my son to play, but he's been playing NFS nonstop)

KZSF - 8/10
BF4 - 2/10
Resogun - 9/10
Warframe - 9/10
ACBF - 8/10
CoD - 5/10

Massively dissapointed with BF4. Has potential but there is so much wrong with this game that the problems would need to be fixed before I recommend it to anybody. Shame as BF3 was my most played game on PS3 (over 800 hours)

Resogun is free and it's an amazing, addictive game!

Warframe again is free and has a wonderful balance for a free game. You're not forced to pay money to achieve things as nearly everything can be made through a long grind. Easily my most played game.

CoD I haven't played much of so I could rate it higher. Mid score as everything seems to work ok. (Work ok as in, works better than BF4) I usually hate CoD.

ACBF looks lush on next gen. Not played much of this but I am impressed with what I've played so far.

KZSF same as ACBF. One thing that really annoys me about the KZ universe though is the story telling. The actual lore of the universe is amazing, it truely is! But they never manage to get the lore across in game :(

Resogun: 8/10, i've enjoyed playing it online with a friend even though the framerate takes a huge hit.

BF4: 7.5/10, I skipped the single player after 20 minutes, but I liked the multiplayer a lot even though i mainly played with randoms. I don't like dlc maps being at launch keeping me out of matches and when the game crashes in the middle of a conquest.

NBA2k14: 8.5/10, what bugs me about nba 2k is that it still feels like the defense is "glued" to your player everytime you make a move. In actual basketball the defense is rarely ever that good.

ACIV 8.5/10 I felt exploration and goofing around was the strongest part of the game. The story missions might have improved but many of them are still lacking.
Resogun 8/10 Not much can be said other than once you get a grasp of the combat that's when the game shines.
KZ:SF 6/10 My most disappointing game so far, horrible pacing, a frustrating difficulty curve, poor level design, the writing eh what else needs to be said. There's also the choatic multiplayer.
Contrast 7/10 I really enjoyed Contrast for what it is. If the game didn't control horribly and went through a bit of QA this would've been a stellar game.

Resogun: 8/10
Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag: 8/10
Battlefield 4: 8/10
DC Universe Online: 6/10
FIFA 14: 8/10
War Thunder: 7/10
Blacklight Retribution: 5/10
Killzone Shadow Fall: 4/10

Flower: 2/5 Beautiful, but no replay value beyond trophy collection
Killzone: 2/5 Good looking tech demo
RESOGUN: 4/5 Fun shooter
Contrast: 2/5 Interesting, but buggy and simple
Trine 2: 4/5 gorgeous and fun

KillZone SF: Art direction and graphics were so gorgeous that they helped smooth out the rough edges in the story and the dodgy gameplay. Have just completed the campaign and will head into the multiplayer shortly. Currently it's a solid 7/10 from me.

NBA 2K: Well I suck at this game hard, which is making it hard to enjoy at present. Once I figure out how to play it without losing all the time I'll probably like it more. Noratingyet/10

Resogun: A fun and pretty time waster that is exactly what it needs to be. 8/10.

Flower: It's like a beautiful dream I want to have, until it gets all dark and moody for a bit, then it gets a bit tiresome. 7/10.

You must be joking with the 2, right? Why do you spend 30 hours with a game you hate?

You must be joking with the 2, right? Why do you spend 30 hours with a game you hate?

Compulsion to finish games you start. Renting games helps break that, but only slightly. AC 4 is my next gamefly rental, i abandoned 3 after a couple hours, i presume 4 will be the same.

You must be joking with the 2, right? Why do you spend 30 hours with a game you hate?

30 was an estimation, I have no idea how long it actually was. I'd say it had to be over 20 though.

I finish everything I play though. I don't leave anything incomplete.

ACIV 9/10
BF4 3/10 (broken as hell)
CoD:G 7/10
KZ:SF 6/10 (MP is pretty dead, SP wasn't great)
NFS:R 8/10
Resogun 9/10 (super addictive, even though I suck at it)
Contrast 6/10 (kind of janky; good for a free game, I suppose)
Warframe 7/10 (pretty complex, don't really have enough time to invest in this game to learn it)
BL:R 7/10 (great game, sort of feels pay2win sometimes, though)

Now I'm going to get a bit off-topic because the thread I created with this question got page'd. Sorry about this in advance, but I really would like an answer :)

I've been playing with my DS4 for some time now, and I've had some issues with my thumb slipping off of the left analog stick, most noticeably when I'm running after someone in AC4.
The same thing happened a few times with the Xbox One while I was running through zombies in DR3, though its textured rim helps a bit to prevent this from happening as often. Is there anyone out there who has tried out stick covers like the Grip-iT covers or stick extenders like the Kontrol-Freek-branded ones? Would you recommend any specific brand, and are stick extenders a worthwhile investment over simple grip covers?

NFS Rivals 7.5/10: Feels great, looks greats, but it's let down by objectives that get a little weary and a multiplayer aspect that has massive potential but is under realized.

Resogun. 8.5/10: Rock solid gameplay and mesmerizing explosions of colour. A meat and potatoes, gameplay-first experience. One of the PS4s best games.

AC4 6/10: Starts out promising, and turning down the HUD makes the beginning areas very immersive. But eventually, ubisoft's bearbones, sterile open world objective design reveals its ugly head and the game becomes boring. 10 hours in and I simply returned it out of boredom. There were brief glints of hope and groove coming over me when playing, but it would leave as quickly as it came.

Battlefield 4 9.3/10: The best multiplayer shooter in years. It really doesn't get much better than this when it works. Luckily for me, it has worked with very minimal lag and crashes that have only occured after game. Even then, i've had about 3 crash in a week of play. Visually stunning launch title, and the best sound design in the genre. Truly the most compelling multiplayer shooter I have played since COD4 and Bad Comapny 2. And the single player is vastly improved over BF3s trainwreck. Still not great, but suprisingly decent with some impressive acting.

Fifa 14 9/10: compressed video really doesn't do the game justice. You have to play it and see it on your tv to really feel the level of immersion and believability the the game offers in motion. I was not expecting to be as impressed as I was. Between the massively upped crowd atmosphere and wide expressions of player animations, the little things really do add up the more you play and become pretty significant. After having just played fifa on the 360 yesterday, the difference is night and day.

Soundshapes 8.7/10: My only disappointment with SS, is that i'm just not into the UGC stuff. But the 5 or so albums that the main campaign lasts is truly unlike anything i have ever played. A fantastic wholly unique, rhythm game. It's like a dinosaur jr. tour poster come to life. Beck? Platformers? Rhythm game? Must have for anyone that hasn't played it, even if it left me wanting. But that's the best compliment, i can give really.

Flower N/A. I've been told by people Flower on the PS4 is so improved over the PS3 version it's essentially a remake entirely. I'm gonna save it to play something relaxing on christmas. Update later.

Need for Speed Rivals - 9/10
Fifa 14 - 8/10
Killzone Shadow Fall - 8/10
Assassins Creed IV Black Flag - 8/10
Battlefield 4 - 7/10
Contrast - 6/10
Resogun - 5/10

Killzone 7/10. Only redeemed by the multiplayer which is more of the same except even more gorgeous. Can't even finish the single player, so horribly shitty it is imo.

Contrast 7/10, fun for a single run through, puzzles are to0 EZ but the style and story make up for it.

Resogun 8/10, it doesn't have that instant hook that Super stardust has, but then again, i havn't fully commited to this game yet. Looks ace, kick ass soundtrack.

Flower 9/10. Still beautiful, still soothing, still completely captivating. This one truly is a timeless classic.

Warframe 9/10 The launch title for me. You have to piece the narrative together yourself, and even then it's nothing to write home about. The gameplay however, is very awesome. The wave based levels, as well as the endless survival has an arcadey feel to 'em that scratches the right itches for me. The parcour gameplay is totally vindicated in these modes, and the leveling up and piecing together a build through mods is both addicting and strategically sound. This is my new warhawk.

Killzone Shadow Fall = 6.5/10
I found it very generic, and Battlefield 4 is just better in about every way imaginable.

Knack = 4.5/10
Not fun. Bad story. Bad characters. Charming art style bit needlessly challenging combat.

Resogun = 8/10
Fun. Exciting. Beautiful. If only it lasted longer than a couple hours...

Contract = 5/10
Pretty much a buggy mess, but the gameplay is unique and it has a couple good moments.

Battlefield 4 = 8/10
Impressive shooter with a lot of variety. The maps are good unlike Call of Duty. While a great console release I still much prefer it on PC.

Flower = 8/10
A very relaxing game.

Blacklight Retribution = 6/10
I can't see myself playing this for more than an hour to try it out.

Killzone: Shadow Fall
Enjoyable and pretty to look at, but otherwise average.

Battlefield 4
The online gameplay is fantastic when it doesn't crash. The single player was a snoozefest for me.
The glitches and general lack of polish really hold it back from being a great game.

Knack
Awful. I appreciate what they were going for but it falls flat for me.
The gameplay isn't fun. Sure it's challenging on hard but there's no reward in the challenge, it's just a test of patience.
On top of that, the game crashes my PS4 and I have to unplug it from the wall to get it working again.

Resogun
Absolutely fantastic.

Contrast
The technical flaws get in the way of an otherwise enjoyable puzzle game.

Killzone: not good. Probably one of the worst KZ games yet. I appreciate what they were trying to do with the navigation of the campaign, but I just don't think it was done very well. Halfway through the game, it becomes a game of waiting on the OWL cool down to shock the shielded soldiers. Really disappointing game.

Resogun: pretty good stuff. Not quite SSHD good but still.

AC4: Pirating stuff was freakin awesome. Usual AC stuff was not. I haven't played AC since Rev and I was shocked to see that absolutely nothing had changed in the free running controls.

BF4: fun but absolutely broken.

Contrast: decent little indie game.

Knack: this is a rental and I've yet to finish it, but it seems alright I guess. Not as bad as the reviews made it out to be.

KZ SP - 8.5/10 (finished before the freefall sections were 'fixed'). Its no war and peace but as far as FPS campaigns go, they get kudos from me for trying in the story. It actualy felt more measured than your typical non stop crazy shooter campaign and the slower pacing was right up my street. Combat was rock solid and proved conclusively for me that you don't need 60fps if your framerate/motion blur is that solid. Best graphics on any console by quite some distance. Not tried MP yet.

AC4 - 9.5/10. Best AC4 game since 2 (I'd put them on par). Great setting, beautiful graphics and improved combat. Also a protagonist you actually root for.

NFS Rivals - 8.5/10. I'm not a huge shooter buff but it is pretty and the gameplay is very nice. I'd have liked a more traditional car/tracks approach to the open world.

Resogun - 9.5/10. Only loses 0.5 pts for being a little short. Amazing graphics and addictive gameplay.

Grip-It is great and fairly cheap. Buy it from their website and ask for only blacks in the description when you order. I bought a double pack and they sent me 4 black and 4 blue ones. I complained and they've sent me 4 more blacks. So yeah, buy them.
Can't say anything of the others you mentioned.

KZ:SF 6/10. Lots of design issues but the multiplayer is at least serviceable
Resogun 8.5/10. Great visuals, great sound, fun to pick up and play but fairly short
BF4 8/10. Single player is run of the mill busy work but multiplayer is seriously fun and addictive
Flower 9/10. Beautiful all over, from the graphics, to the control, to the wonderful music and sound design. It is short but it's so worthwhile to play.

The games I own:

KZ:SF 7/10
Knack 7/10
ACIVBF 8/10
Trine 2 7/10
Resogun N/A - Played to little not really my type of game either
Contrast 5/10
Flower 8/10

Thanks, man! I ordered a single pack from Amazon (2 black, 2 blue), and since I'm getting the blue DS4 anyway I think it'll be perfect! 2 blue for the blue DS4, 2 black for my XB1 controller.

I rarily give nines or tens to games, with few exceptions like TLOU, WipEout HD, Journey, Silent Hill 2 and SSX. So, with that in mind, both KZ:SF and Resogun get eight from me. The former might have scored higher without the frustrating sections, and the latter if it had more levels to play.

Enjoying Knack in short bursts. I wish I'd started on Hard difficulty though.

Killzone I'm trading in tomorrow - it's just not for me. Almost everything about it irritates me, apart from the graphics. Perhaps it's FPSes generally, I don't know. It just feels pointless.

Resogun is great. But everyone knows that already!

based on playing through the games on my friends system.

killzone for me is a 6.5 the graphics are nice but the game is unpolished in gameplay.

knack for me is a 6 just an average launch title more so a tech demo.

resogun 9/10 solid masterpiece.
