You are better off getting 7200rpm HDD since SSHD only work well if you are playing same game often like CoD or BF4.

The SSHD rarely has any benefit in BF4 due to how massive the data for the maps are and the fact that the maps dont usually repeat for a while. It can't store more than 1 or 2 maps in the solid state cache since the cache sizes come in 4GB and 8GB versions.

It seems like the top one (ST750LX003) is a replacement for the STBD750100. You get the best of both worlds, the SSD cache and 7200RPM, but it is 250GB less than the more commonly purchased ST1000LM014.

Always try and go with the 7200 RPM HDDs at least for parity sake. Get the SSHD version if, 1) It's a 5400 RPM and 2) if space is priority for you. This is if you can find one that is 7200 RPM/SSHD and not that much higher in price. You won't be able to find many SSHDs over 750GB I'm afraid. I have one of the 750GB SSHD ones you listed (Seagate Momentus XT 750GB). It's great. But it was over $140.00 when I bought it. $99 is a good deal if you don't plan on exceeding 750GB anytime soon.

If you really want the best bang for the buck get the Travel Star 7200 RPM HDD. The test we've seen on the PS4 don't really take advantage of smallish 8GB cache found on the SSHDs (The standard HHD 7200 RPM go for under $60. All of this is moot if you you save for the best SDD on the market at the moment (Samsung EVO). Then, the speeds shoot through the roof!

Yeah, I really don't mind the missing 250GB, I think for now, at least. I'd rather take advantage of having something that's both SSHD for the caching and 7200RPM. The Momentus XT 750gb seems like it fits both categories for me.

Since you have the XT 750, do you think it's better that it's 7200RPM, that it's an SSDH, or both? As in, the spreadsheet on page 1 is incredibly outdated and rarely updated, so it's hard to tell if 7200RPM is better or SSHD between the two. This cannot be predicted. You'll just have to use trial and error. For laptops you can use bench mark apps that adjust the data size for testing. The only thing we can do with the PS4 is use it for a few weeks starting and stopping different games. The 8GB cache This helps on some start up times, AFTER you've already loaded it once. Maybe for some smaller indie titles. But it won't have much effect for larger games like KZ but at least you'll be 7200 RPM parity all the time.

This is exactly the info I was looking for, thanks Tux. I was debating between the Seagate SSHD, and the HGST 7200rpm HDD. I was leaning more towards the 7200rpm drive, as I figured it would be faster more consistently, while the SSHD may be a lot faster at times, but only as fast as the stock drive the majority of the time.

I am going to bite on the Travelstar and get a solid performing 1TB drive into my PS4 before more games start hitting. Also, the Travelstar drive is going for $73 on Amazon right now. There are two seemingly identical drives, but one is $88 while the other is $73.

A 7200RPM SSHD with 16/32GB SDD cache would be wicked even if it was still a 750GB drive size!

Yeah, that basic 7200RPM 1TB Travel Star HDD is a winner!

PROS:

1) Great price
2) Good consistent speeds at 7200RPM
3) Comes in 1TB
4) Easy to find; readily available

CONS:

1) Missing the 8GB cache SSD.

I'll try to check if inFAMOUS streams any better when dashing through at high speed too.

I did a few tests on a freshly initialised HDD before swapping in the SSD.

KZSF BLU-RAY INSTALL 39GB v01.00
HDD 1:10 ready to play, 32:14 fully installed
SSD 1:05 ready to play, 32:08 fully installed

KZSF STARTUP this varies a bit each time but roughly..
HDD 14s, SSD 11s

KZSF LOAD CHAPTER 2-2
HDD 47s, SSD 38s

DELETE 100x 296KB SCREENSHOTS & 5x 27MB VIDEOS
HDD 30s, SSD 26s


Installs from Blu-ray are clearly BD read limited so no surprises there. Killzone level load times are a nice 20%+ improvement but little things like the PDM game/app icons loading more quickly are the most immediate benefit. Larger download app installs, already quite quick on PS4 are snappier still. The only one I remembered to write down was the smaller a Resogun install time, 5secs on HDD, 3secs on SSD.

I would not recommend an HDD or SSD for the PS4 under 500GB. You'll fill up 160GB - 250GB in no time.

PS4 hard drive is that it needs to be a 2.5-inch SATA II drive and run at least 5400RPM. It also needs to be larger than 160GB in size. But I'd go for 500GB or larger. You can get a very good Travelstar HDD 500GB (7200RPM) for around $80.00.

Don't waste your money on a small 256GB SSD.

It depends on the weak link in the chain. Does your $10,000 PC gaming rig with triple SLI/SplitfireX PCI card, I7, Dual 4K display at Ultimate settings overload your puny 5400RPM HDD?

Never tried that.

But for PS4, I don't think it matters since the games optimization for the platform will have more impact on any HDD or SDD you can put in it. Maybe it would have mattered on the PS3 if you were trying to read off the slow Blu-ray drive.

Going SDD is mainly for utility: Install, boot, and load time speed-ups when using it in the PS4.

Besides, the developers have to deign their games for the lowest common denominator on the PS4: SATA 2.0 or higher, with a 5400RPM HDD in mind.

That is correct. If all you care about is space those 5400 RPM HDD 1.5TB and 2.0TB are the way to go.

Those are basically like the stock HDD that comes in the PS4, except much larger!

I tried putting in my Seagate Momentus XT 500GB sshd in my PS4 but the PS4 just doesn't seem to like this drive at all. I can get into safe mode and reinitialize and update the firmware but after the reboot I only get the blue light of death.

I had been using this drive in my PS3 for the last couple years without problems. It looks like the PS4 was able to format it as I can see that multiple partitions were created but on reboot it never works. I've tried reinserting it a few times but no good.

I've since put the stock drive back in and it's working normally. Anyone have any idea what could be happening?

you don't need to format it beforehand. The PS4 will handle it completely.

I just did this yesterday, you'll be fine like others have said.

I took my time opening the enclosure, because now I have the old PS4 HDD unit in there as the external.

From what the internet says, it appears an SSHD is 80+% the performance of an SSD, for a quarter of the price.
Personally, if I still had room on my stock drive left, I'd just wait until the 2TB SSHDs start coming out and then upgrade then.

Thats not really how the tech works. I have a SSHD and I usually have full pick of the vehicles in everymap.
