I could not find another thread more appropriate, please post a link if there is a thread regarding PS4 HDD exchange instead of only speed.

I bought a 2TB drive this weekend and plan to install it the coming weekend. What is the best way to do this transition? Is my planned approach correct or have I missed anything?
Do I have to do some kind of synchronization before I begin?


I have a EU, US and UK account.

My plan is to:

1. Log in to each account and deactivate the PS4 in settings.
2. Replace Drive.
3. Do I have to reinstall the firmware?
4. Log in with my EU PSN account, activate as primary device. Go to library and download all my content/apps.
4.2 Repeat with US PSN Account
4.3 Repeat with UK PSN Account, I only use UK account for streaming apps like BBC.


Anything else? Are there any apps or content that wont show up in the library?

Any considerations regarding games that "require" accounts or logins? Like Pinball Arcade?

Should I make a list of all my content before I do all of the above?

I only have one physical game disc, Assasins Creed 4. Anything to consider regarding physical games or will they just reinstall in the background when I play them?

Just make sure you sync your game saves to the cloud if you have PS+. If you don't, then just save your game saves to a flash USB stick. Other than that you have it covered. The firmware for a new drive replacement is larger than the standard firmware update. Make sure you download the one that is for HARD DRIVE REPLACEMENT! Not the standard update when not upgrading your drive.

You'll also have to boot to safe mode and follow the instructions for a new drive. It will format and expect your USB stick to have the right firmware.

Don't worry about 16MB vs 32MB for HDD. The most important is that you're using a 7200RPM drive vs a 5400RPM drive (the non-SSHD version). Good find on the WD BLACK SERIES 750GB. Only $67! I used to use the WD Black for my PCs. Been using the WD 750GB Momentus XT SSHD since the PS3 days. but they are hard to find and $150 for 750GB.

If you're worried about object pop in and texture loading go with the Samsung Evo SSD.

It seems that all PS4 issues with the M9T have been resolved with firmware 1.70. Based stability updates!

My main concern is with HDD space...I don't want to buy a 2TB drive just to have a 2.5 or 3 TB release 3 or 4 months later!

There is no backup function on the PS4. You will have to back up your saves to the cloud or to a pen drive and then redownload everything again.

They all copy 100% of the game to your drive so welcome to the delete club, I have a 240GB Intel drive which leaves they 170GB as install space. With BF4 + DLC, TLoU and Destiny I have ~49GB free so there's a lot of juggling going on.

Ah, darn it! I'll just finish Infamous quickly so I can delete it. Might not install BF4 ever again either so there's some free space.

2TBs are not that expensive. Look for internal and external drives on sale.

I bought this one, pulled it out of its casing, put it in my PS4 and put the PS4 drive in the casing and am now using it as an external drive.

There are no 2TB SSHD hybrid drives or even 1.5TB hybrid drives that will fit in a PS4.

For those of you who have labotomized a Backup Plus Slim, how has the overall speed been with the M9T over time? After all my reading it seems the drive is comparable but slower to the 7200 Hitachi Travelstar drive, but if it's more on the comparable side and less on the slower side, I might go with the extra storage afterall.

Make sure you're using the right size screwdriver, if you're not you will just end up striping the screws.

At first I used the smaller jeweler's screwdriver set that I used when I changed the HDD in my laptop. The screws in the PS4 enclosure are a little bigger though, after going out and buying the right screwdriver they loosened up straight away.

Yeah they are a pain. I had the right screw driver but one of them started to strip anyway. I just grabbed a small flat pliers and gently unscrewed the last screw.

Success! Took it down to the pub with a couple of screwdrivers, nobody could get them out but a friend had a some tool called a mole grip at home which did the trick. Googled about 20 walkthroughs and none of them mention those screws being a problem, guess I just got unlucky!

Are you rich? Buy the biggest SSD, install it and don't worry about it. There you go, best speed and big storage.

This would probably work best for what you're looking for. Good price, it's a hybrid, and nicely reviewed. Seagate has gained some favor in recent time.

We got 2 Ps4's at launch and over a year ago now, almost straight away I put in the 2 TB drives.

No issues or problems what so ever, and its a nice size. Yes, 3 or 4 TB would of been nice, but 2 is a big as it goes and fits.

Could not see the point in hybrids, all the tests I viewed they were not that much faster...

I don't know why no one hasn't release a hybrid with a 50GB cache portion, best we can hope for the moment if a PS4 firmware allows for external HDDs to hold game data, then I would install a SSD in a heartbeat

On a PS4, a SSD still only saves you a few seconds. Hyrbids are much more fairly priced, you still get a speed boost from a standard 5400 RPM drive, and can at least double the capacity with the one I linked.

I am, but my concern is reliability, how much heat does it generates? It uses an adapter in front of the plug socket to power it, would that cause issues down the line. I guess I just need to see some reviews first. But it would be awesome to slap a 8TB HDD to the PS4 and be good for the rest of this console generation.

damn it, you are making me regret switching my SSD to a HDD but i just cant deal with more data management. im gonna miss all those perks but i want to have a huge library inside my PS4 just like i did with my PS3

The Samsung (Seagate) drive I pulled out of the Expansion external died after about 4 months. I'm back on the stock drive.

I might roll the dice again on Seagate, but I really don't want to. The space was really nice though.

I wish WD had a 2tb 9mm drive.

Kinda funny how that is. Thanks for that, if it ever drops a bit in price I'll probably try it out again.

EDIT: Was reading the 1 star reviews, and it's pretty much all people having troubles with it in their PS4 lmao.

For a console? That seems a bit over the top. A hybrid is more than adequate.
