PS4 HDD speed test thread (HDD/SSHD/SSD/STD)

Yeah hybrids are pretty good. They speed up the ui, give you double the space and make things boot up pretty quickly. I have a seagate1tb sshd since launch and I haven't had an issue.
I hear external drives should stay external since they have a high failure rate once taken out.

I got this hard drive last year

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00ILALU9G/

I opened it up and switched with the stock PS4 one. So I have 2TB in PS4 and a 500GB in the case. It was cheaper than straight up buying a internal hard drive. Not sure if thats still the case but not really any hard work to open it.

As for speed, sound, fans or whatever its great - neither better or worse than the stock 500GB.

But why is that? Makes me think of the human body and an organ being exposed to open air lmao.

It's still the case, but I did that and my drive failed after 4 months. #seagate

Is there much difference in load times between a 5400 and 7200 rpm sshd in ps4? I'm slightly concerned about the extra heat generated by the 7200 rpm drive. Should I be?

Lol FROM WHAT I HEAR... They are kind of like slower/junker ones that didn't cut the mustard at full operational speed but preform well enough at lower speeds and stress. I'm no expert.

They work exactly the same internal and external, same rotational speed, same firmware. The usb enclosure is just a SATA - USB translator chip basically.

Therefore they don't break earlier. However you are right that the used harddisks in the enclosures are not always the newest and best generation of harddisks.

I've been using the 850 EVO 500GB since January and it's working like a champ. Same PDM responsiveness improvement I had with the 840 EVO and the Killzone load test I did was faster but Guerrilla may have improved that with a patch since I first tested with the 840.

HDDs of some brands which are in external enclosure have different time before power down settings than that you buy which are the drive by them self, there are tools to modify this setting in the firmware.

There should be no difference in durability, once taken out of the case or compared to one that you buy that isn't in an external enclosure.

did the switch, dat over 500GB download though. with psn speeds is gonna take a month to download but ill halt everything when Bloodborne begins to pre-load if by the weekend it aint done

a lot of stutter on the XMB when downloading multiple games and installing, it didnt happen when i had an SSD

Yeah, I notice a different in UI smoothness with my hybrid vs a stock drive, sucks to hear that even with condensed platters it still lags.

i think it was just a one time thing, after that stutter it didnt happen again though i do notice icons loading times are a tad slower (i can see the refresh arrows)

Could you provide a link or a name of such a tool? Thanks.

Welp, I just splurged on a 500 GB Samsung Evo 850.
Figured I might as well throw some money away in preparation for Bloodborne.

Depending on the improvement over the standard HDD performance, I may end up migrating the SSD to my gaming PC. My 250 GB Evo 840 in the rig has filled up quickly.

Noticed i'm down to 120 or so gigs, and the load times on Bloodborne are killing me, looks like its time for an upgrade.

Are the seagate SSHDs worth the money, given Seagate's less then stellar rep? Or it is better to just get a good 1-2tb 5400 and let the more dense platters speed things up compared to the stock HD?

Just picked up that 1 TB HGST drive for $63. That improvement, along with the increase in space, is plenty acceptable.

Looks like amazon current has an $8 price difference between them. I suppose it comes down to wither or not the faster load times are worth more then the possibility of a seagate drive failure.

For less money you can put a 7200 rpm internal 1tb. The drive you posted is a slow 5400rpm.

The tradeoff between capacity and reduced load times.
If you know of a 7200rpm laptop drive that will fit inside of a PS4 that has more than 1TB of storage, I'd love to know about it.

The person asked about a 2TB hard drive. Even that 5400rpm drive is slightly faster than the PS4 stock drive (I don't know by how much it would actually help load times but still), plus you get all the storage space you need.

So it just depends if you want the space or the speed basically. There still are no 2TB 7200+ rpm drives as far as I know.

I just put a 2TB Samsung Spinpoint M9T ST2000LM003 in my PS4 from the Seagate Backup Plus Slim.

Space to me is a little more important that saving 2-3 seconds in load times.

But everyone is different. And I say go with what makes you comfortable.

The Seagate 1tb 2.5 sshdd is a good deal at $79.99 on newegg right now. Would like to put that in the ps4 and then put the 1tb 7200rpm in my xb1.

Has anyone used the new backup function of the new firmware to backup the hard drive to USB? Is it similar to the way the ps3 did it? Before I switched out my ps3 hard drive back in the day I backed up to USB, put the new drive in and restored. Does it work like that?

I just did it.

I attached the USB drive, selected backup from the PS4 and it backed up everything (hours).

I then shut down, installed the new HD, put the USB key in with firmware 2.50.

I then turned on the power holding the button for 7 seconds and installed the firmware (last option in the list).

Once done, I rebooted, hooked up my USB and did a system recovery (hours).

When it came back up, it looked exactly the same as the drive before.

Seamless! Just lots of waiting for backup and recovery.

Per Digital Foundry:
I'm glad they tested this for Bloodborne specifically because the load times have been such a contentious issue. Yeah, the loads are "long" but I wasn't feeling them being crippling. Interesting to see that my SSHD is giving 15-25% faster loads across the board. A larger difference than I was expecting, honestly.

This should serve as a good reminder in general for everyone that HDD upgrades for the PS4 aren't that big of an expense and the process is incredibly easy considering all the factors at play. That it was designed in the first place to offer easy swaps is fantastic. Especially if you can get a different drive in before you ever start up the machine it's so, so easy.

The 1TB 7200rpm or SSHDs can be had for ~$60-80 regularly now which makes your net cost at the end a mere $20-40. For 15-25% faster loads + more space? Not a bad deal. Were this the 7th gen we'd be paying $50-100 more for just some space and no performance improvement.

So is there anything better than the Seagate 1TB SSHD in terms of price + space + speed?

2TB drives are out because they aren't fast enough, anything under 1gb isn't enough space, and regular SSDs are too expensive.

I've already got a 2GB in mine, but I'm thinking about buying a 1TB until that's filled for the speed boost.

Until we see 2TB 7200rpm or SSHD drives in the near future, that's pretty much it. It's going to be several more years before >1TB SSDs are anywhere remotely close to affordable, so these are our choices for a while.

Well now that I reread my post I see I said I have a 2GB hard drive which can get pretty tricky when trying to install 50GB games..

But yeah it seems like either the 1TB SSHD or a good 1TB 7200rpm drive is the way to go for now. I see that HGST drive was just $50 at Best Buy and Ebay but of course it's sold out now so I missed that boat.

I guess I'll wait for the next deal on the Seagate SSHD or a really good deal on an SSD to get anything. Until then I really hope they patch those Bloodborne load times. I haven't even started it yet but I don't know if I want to even deal with the frustration. I'm sure I'll die way too much and I'm afraid I'm going to hate the game because of it.

Someone made a great set of pictures and steps on how to backup and upgrade the drive. Good info if you are not sure about the steps. You can download pics of all the steps or switch to full screen to view them. Has info on drives/ format / download area etc. Best detailed how to replace your PS4 HDD plus backup.

If you can find them, Seagate actually made a 750gb 7200rpm SSHD, that's what I have in both my PS3 and PS4 and they are very fast. Just looked and you can still get them for around $70 on Amazon and eBay.

Until this baby comes out:
nyko data bank it's basically the 2tb drive or 1 tb sshd for best bang for buck.

Just what I was looking for, thanks.

It doesn't say anything about deactivating your ps4 before back up. Is this necessary?

My friend tried it today (backup and new drive )and upgraded to a 1tb drive and he did not have to deactivate the PS4, since it was going back on the same PS4.

Ok thanks for the reply. I followed a video tutorial when upgrading my PS3 HDD and it mentioned that you have to deactivate it at a certain point then reactive I believe when everything is done. Maybe it's different on the ps4.

Got the Seagate 1TB hybrid SSHD yesterday. Installation and setup was pretty easy. The difference in Bloodborne is very noticeable, especially when you die as often as I do :) .

If I bounce back and forth between games a lot should I go for a 7200rpm drive over a SSHD? If so what's my best option for a 7200rpm drive?

Also, what's my best option for a 2TB Drive?

Being fair, I'm not quite sure how to answer the dealings between the SSHD and the 7200RPM drive.

However, the best option, in my opinion, for the 2TB drive is the 2TB Samsung Spinpoint M9T ST2000LM003 from the Seagate Backup Plus Slim.

There aren't a lot of options at the top end for laptop drives right now. Everything is moving towards SSDs, so development of faster (and hotter and more battery draining) laptop drives has sort of died off.

Get the 7200 RPM HGST over the Seagate SSHD if you're concerned about Seagate's reliability. Otherwise the Seagate is slightly faster in most real-world PS4 tests for slightly more money. For 2TB, I think the Seagate is your only option at this point.

Or if you want you can almost double the price of your PS4 and add a 1 TB SSD.
