They used to make them cheaper over time. Ending that bothersome tradition some executive found the holy grail of profits. That’s why we need a strong XBox.
That is not really why. They are both resorting to mid generation upgrades to minimise price drops and keep ASP’s high. They used to make them cheaper over time. Ending that bothersome tradition some executive found the holy grail of profits. That’s why we need a strong XBox.
For the next two years we will see lots of cross gen games, this means less reasons to buy the next gen, so PS4 could reach PS2 in sales. Ok maybe not, but 20 million units in the next two years are plausible, now are 14/16 a year.
Yeah. It’s kind of sad. Graphene was supposed to save us all from the dead of the Moore’s law but here we are, it’s 2020 and my future of tiny carbon tubes is nowhere to be seenThat is not really why. They are both resorting to mid generation upgrades to minimise price drops and keep ASP’s high.
Semiconductor tech advancement has slowed down and is increasing costs of jumping from one node to the next (expensive fabs, expensive processes, diminishing returns with each node transitions, etc...). The days where you can lose massively on the launch SoC and gain it all back and some thanks to die shrinks are kind of... gone. Same thing about when they try to convince you that releasing more HW more often is good for users as it allows tech to move forward faster... again, technology process (generation cycles) are slowing down, the pace of progress is not speeding up (unless you want to pay more for more expensive cooling and like bigger and bigger console boxes).
I still remember Carbon Nanotube TV’sYeah. It’s kind of sad. Graphene was supposed to save us all from the dead of the Moore’s law but here we are, it’s 2020 and my future of tiny carbon tubes is nowhere to be seen![]()
Ps4 Pro is discontinued already. If Sony has Factory capacity and reduces Ps4 to 199 it might sell another 20M.
From what we´ve been seeing, not happening.
No; didn't say or imply that.. explained myself in the thread a bunch already. So you want Sony to not be profitable?
1.5 million hardware units sold Q2 2020 https://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/library/presen/er/pdf/20q2_supplement.pdf p.9
I believe that was part of their plan to push PS5. With the system still $299 retail, people can sell them for a good chunk of PS5 price whereas if it was $149 new less people would upgrade because they'd only get $99 at most used. They used to make them cheaper over time. Ending that bothersome tradition some executive found the holy grail of profits. That’s why we need a strong XBox.
I had no doubt about PS4 being the most profitable console of all time. And PS5 will be the next most profitable console when its cycle will end.
Congrats Sony.
Geez. DLC and microtransactions account for over a third of the sales? Shit, I guess that crap isn't going away anytime soon.Games Radar
A thread from noted PlayStation analyst ArmGunar on Resetera claims that the machine has outperformed all of its competitors and predecessors.
ArmGunar says that "according to my calculations, PS4 is now the most profitable console in video game history," having amassed ¥1230 billion ($11.33 billion) in profit from its launch in Q3 2013 and Q2 2020, which ended last month, and for which Sony recently released its financial results.
We are literally posting articles based on posts made on forums now?
GamesRadar is an embarrassment.
On Topic
The Earnings report is also about Games & Network services, so PS+ and digital games revenue are included in that.
The PS2 and PS3 didnt have that so yeah the profits would be lower simply because PSN was mostly a cost and didnt bring in anywhere near the numbers PS+ and downloadable games bring in.
Im not saying the PS4 isnt the most profitable console of all time, im just saying different times are aiding the console.
If the PS2 had downloadable games and charged for PSN the sheer number of them out there would have put it on top......the fact that the PS2 is in the running without all those extra services is a true testament.

The system was sold out everywhere. It could have sold way more in 2020. I sold my day 1 PS4 Pro to somebody for €300. That's crazy demand.I believe that was part of their plan to push PS5. With the system still $299 retail, people can sell them for a good chunk of PS5 price whereas if it was $149 new less people would upgrade because they'd only get $99 at most used.
Sells tanked in 2020 for PS4 because it was a system going on 8 years at $299. After the first year of PS5 I expect the price to drop big.
But where is your beloved Xbox?
Switch wishes it had that thin of a bezel.
But where is your beloved Xbox?![]()
$11.33 billion from October 2020 to $10.98?This thread didn't age well in light of Nintendo's latest switch numbers. I think it could still be true if the profitability was extended to include all publishers.
I've noticed people around here will assume you're an Xbox fanboy if you ever poke fun at Sony...really weird to me.In third place, behind the runner-up that had its arse handed to it in just over three years by Nintendo!
* I had an OG and 360 incidentally, hardly "beloved".
Maybe costs of the PS5.$11.33 billion from October 2020 to $10.98?![]()
I thought that would've been factored in before October, weird.Maybe costs of the PS5.
ms earned in 3 months more than both (sony and ninty) did in 7 years. I don't think they are worried at allBut where is your beloved Xbox?![]()
Sony did not share Oct-Dec 2020 profits yet... it will happen tomorrow.$11.33 billion from October 2020 to $10.98?![]()
It's hilarious how Nintendo fans necro'd this thread just to gloat lol
That's exactly what they did though.....I'm not concerned with their profits. Earn those profits by selling me good games. That's what matters at the end.
I don't feel any ways about it. I just found it funnyYeah because if there is one thing S**y fans are known for, its not gloating.
