PS4 Remote Play “just happens”, no dev support required

I've been getting conflicting info on Internet use. Do you have any proof it only supports local wifi?
This is how remote play works

1. Wifi Direct or Direct Wifi (w/e you want to call it) best option

2. Private Home Network via your router (not internet)

3. Over the internet (this one introduces lag and depends on internet connection)

Well you can't use it over the internet, that's how they manage lag. Both the PS4 and the Vita have to be on the same local network. It's basically for use at home only as a pseudo-Wii-U controller for gaming without TV.
You can use it over the internet but you don't have to be on the same local network, you can be anywhere in the world but of course that introduces major lag and no it is not pseudo WiiU, it is a feature that was built into PS3 that is carried over to PS4.
I'm still confused on how it will work, and how bad the lag would be.
The have allegedly reduced lag but we'll have to try it to find out for ourselves. See above for how remote play works.

Id Love an OLED tv but until then the vita is one of the best display devices on the market its really sad we dont have decent priced OLED tvs yet :( though my Sony Hx853 is a fantastic tv the vitas screen is just amazing to watch anything on it will be brilliant :).

Is there any indication from E3 of what the lag will be like amazed they arent showing the feature off on the show floor

Why not mention that at e3? it would have been cool to at least get a bit excited about the Vita. I knew Remote Play was happening and Sony wanted this to happen with most of their games, but I'm glad it's not something extra the developers have to do to make it happen. Very cool.

It does seem strange they did not say that during the Vita section, but they said a few times before E3 on Vita remote play so they probably thought they did not need to.

I have a super rare 20GB launch PS3 without wifi included. Does any of this apply to me?

Already have a vita, this is all I need to preorder ps4 this weekend. I anticipate most of my time will be spent streaming to vita.

This is one of the more exciting things to look forward to for Vita owners. I hope everything goes as smooth as they seem to say it will.

I hope developers make more use of the Vita in their games too
like a kind of Wii U Gamepad.

(use for it in WATCH_DOGS, The Divison, Battlefield 4 (commander control))

It's welcome and great that they are getting this in on an OS level. With the better HW, this should definitely be an improvement or at least should get better over time.

Yeah, Cerny confirmed it in the Knack preview as well.

"It just works" and all the devs have to do is map the controls for vita.

being able to lay in bed at night at play whatever PS4 game i want is going to be awesome. As soon as the next iteration of the Vita is released, i am buying it. Was really hoping they would have a PS4 Vita Bundle for pre-order... oh well, the launch edition PS4 is good enough.

so... for example, if a native PS4 game runs at 60fps, will that be the same on Vita? Off course the game resolution will be lower on the Vita, but if the frame rate is still the same, wow it will awesome. (is it even possible?)

I've had the Launch Fifa game for the Vita and love it....but it was basically a port of an older Fifa engine. Still looked great though, and friends couldn't believe it was a game.

EA is releasing their newest Fifa game on the Vita this year, and they usually go for $39.99. If its with an updated engine, I might get that version...or if they have a bundle for both the PS4 version and Vita version.

what I like about getting the Vita version, instead of PS4 Fifa on the Vita through streaming, is that I can game offline anywhere....I usually leave my Vita in my car and take it everywhere.
I've played the original FIFA Football as my brother got it at launch, it was great, but I was a bit disappointed that it was basically FIFA 11 rather than FIFA 12. I assumed they'd fix that with the next version, however "FIFA 13" was just the same game again with a few transfer updates and a new logo. If I didn't get it for free through Amazon for pre-ordering Soul Sacrifice I'd have felt ripped off.

I hope what you say about FIFA 14 turns out to be true and they actually put some effort into the Vita version this year. It wouldn't surprise me if they try to get away with a re-skin again though which is why I was leaning towards the PS4 version.

Didn't they say before that devs have to provide a control mapping for Vita? Or maybe that's optional and it has a default button mapping that it uses if there isn't a custom one available.

This will be a problem, though. Even some PsOne games suffer due the lower number of buttons on the Vita. And no, Touch screen mapping isn't ideal :( .

From the look of things so far, the majority of the work is done in hardware on the PS4 so I think yeah, it will work great on Vita.

They started this on PS3 and PSP but it was probably shoe horned it later, here they clearly had the feature in mind when developing the Vita and PS4 hardware.

I'm anxious to see a real world demo of this. I REALLY hope lag will be close to Wii U levels on a private connection scale. It would be fantastic.

I bet the same thing will be enabled on smartphone, tablets and whatever in the future. That would be great, imagine to be able to stream the game in any tv in the house, or maybe even online from your ps4
Yeah im really hoping so. Not really remote play on a smartphone but some kind of integration like they're trying to do right now. But looks like its only for tablets

I never get this. I'm not sure I spend more than a minute or two on the toilet. Up your fibre intake.
Same here. Sometimes I'm annoyed that I'm already done with my pooping and I haven't died yet in Jetpack Joyride haha.

Well done Sony. It's worth buying a Vita just for this feature alone.

I can't imagine how good Killzone Shadowfall would look on the oled screen. Just awesome.

If I understand correctly from reading several articles before the PS4 is streaming the video to the Vita and the Vita is simply acting as a controller? Also read that remote play can be used while the content it being output to a TV at the same time.

If this is true then I would assume you could use remote play to use the Vita as only a screen while still using the dualshock 4 as a controller?

I still wonder how well this will work. Did we get any new videos from E3 about this? Wii U Off-TV play is so good because it works so well. It's more responsive than my TV. If Vita and PS4 can achieve the same level then we have a winner here. I'm still sceptical though.

In terms of aliasing, this should in fact result in the best image quality there has ever been on console games. Basically, you get the default rendering of the game (e.g. 1080p with some post-processing AA) and then get 4xOGSSAA on top of that due to downsampling 1080p to 540p. And watch all that on a high-ppi OLED screen.

As a huge IQ enthusiast, I can't wait.

I know with the wii u all games take a quality hit and look worse than playing on the television. On the game pad you get artifacts and low res. Why would the ps4 work different and look better, I expected worst quality on vita just like the wii.

Doesn't that have to do with the relatively low resolution of the WiiU controller in the first place? I have no clue about the artifacts though.

I'd like to know how they're going to handle a few things on remote play:

1. Enabling access on a Wide Area Network, or more simply remote-play outside of your home network

- What kind of bandwidth requirements are needed to ensure a seemless experience?
- What is being done to curb the inherent lag from transferring data to/from multiple networks?
- With WAN remote-access, an issue with many video files is packet loss. Juttered video, lost audio, dropped framerates, etc. so what kind of infrastructure and coding solutions are being put in place to prevent these issues?

2. What is the effect on battery life on the VITA? Will this be a WiiU controller redux?

3. With the touchpad on the PS4 controller being used for in-game actions, how will that transfer to the VITA? Since the VITA (as far as i know) does not have a touch pad, will developers need to code touchpad-based interactions to be substituted by buttons?

4. What kind of limitations are being put in place for remote-play? Is it a service available for single player mode only or is there the option to be able to remote-play multiplayer services or off-host co-op?

I'd like to know these things, because it is an interesting feature but remote play does have its limitations currently. If any of these questions have been answered already, please feel free to clue me in :)

PS3 remote play used around 1mbps. This won't use much more. Probably less then 3mbps.

Will use less battery then actually playing a Vita game.

It has 2 of them :P

Do you mean coop with one on PS4 and another on Vita? That's impossible
