PS4 Remote Play “just happens”, no dev support required

Now all we need confirmed is the ability to turn on/off the PS4 through the Vita.
you can already do this with the ps3/vita.
I guess this is maybe the most appropriate topic to ask this, sorry if not

All these companies (capcom, EA, Ubisoft) are pushing their second screen compatibility for games with stuff like the division and Battlefield 4 having in game uses for tablets. I know Microsoft has been promoting that exact functionality with their smartglass term, but is this functionality also on the ps4? haven't seen Sony say anything anywhere about using another device with their stuff outside of the Vita for remote play and access to PSN with your phone.

Will the vita be only for remote play streaming of ps4 games or will it work as the "second screen" for that same functionality or will I need a tablet/does the ps4 even have that stuff at all?
the division was demoed on a ps4, so yes, the ps4 has a smartglass equivalent. i would assume that the vita would offer a second screen function, like tablets. there were some techdemos that showed people using an android tablet and interacting with the ps4 btw. i believe it was engadget who had a ps4 camera tech demo and there was tablet use in it.

They did mention integrating functionality with phones and tablets in February.

Eidos announced few days ago that Vita will host the 2nd screen experience of the upcoming DE:HR Directors Cut on PS3. They originally created that stuff for WiiU only, but now it will spread to both PS3+Vita and X360+Smartglass.

What I'm hoping is that the Playstation app will encompass all of this second-screen stuff, rather than being in separate apps. We'll see, but I REALLY hope that's the case.

It makes sense. That app could also control media when playing, send PMs etc.

Do we know what resolution will be pumped out to the Vita screen?

I mean, if devs are making UI for 1080p screens, it is going to look like horse shit on the Vita. The fact that devs don't have to put extra work in there to make a scaled down version of their game UI worries me quite a bit...

yeah, this is what makes the most sense imo. i'll be pissed if i have to have division, battlefield, killzone, etc individual apps on my ipad.

Sounds good.

I'm still trying to find a solid answer to whether Remote Play works outside of your home network. For example, connecting to your PS4 from a friend's house over the Internet.

The original PS4 press release says:

Notice it says "networks" (plural). Also notice the notation. The notation says:

"..play games outside comfortably"? Like outside of your house, I guess?

Has anyone learned any more about local wifi versus internet for Remote Play?

good catch, that definitely implies internet-enabled remote play. I'd definitely be up for that with slower paced titles

There's no reason to think this won't work like the PS3 remote play. Which works over the internet.

What you just posted only seems to support that further.

It could just mean literally what it says, playing games outside. My home wifi is pretty shitty once I go into my backyard, for example.

Hopefully this isn't as laggy as PSP to PS3 remote play was. I was so excited about that feature, but almost all my non RPG PS1 games were practically unplayable due to the lag...

If the remote play is like Wii U to Gamepad though, I'll be ecstatic. I fucking love off TV play on the Wii U, so that idea spreading is a good thing in my opinion!

The current implementation of Remote Play works over the internet, and we know the PS4's built-in video encoder is designed to send video over the internet and not just high-bandwidth local video. Indeed, one of the things Sony showed a video for at the reveal was Remote Play over the Internet... but the other end was a PS4 instead of a Vita.

I'd be really surprised if Remote Play on the Vita isn't supported over the internet.

You can be pretty sure that you can still use remote play over internet just like PSP did.

It may be convenient just to be able to get on the store from anywhere and maybe play some games from a hut in South Africa.
