From https://zhugeex.com/2015/11/ps4-xb1-install-base-in-china-reaches-500000/:

"Shanghai Oriental Pearl today announced that Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One have reached a total of 500,000 owners in China (Mainland). This comes over a year since the launch of the Xbox One which originally launched back in September 2014 and 8 months after the PlayStation 4 launch in March of this year. Sales have been disappointing for the two consoles in China with neither of the two being able to drastically increase the presence of consoles in the country despite the government recently legalising the sale of dedicated gaming systems. Oriental Pearl, the company that distributes both the PS4 and XB1 in China, said that they hope to reach over 1 million owners in 2016 through the continued release of software titles and enhanced digital services.

Shanghai Oriental Pearl have said that the price of consoles, lack of big software titles, censorship from the Government and long approval times have been the primary reasons for the lack of console sales in China. When the Xbox One launched in China it only launched with around 10 launch titles that were region locked, it took until April for Microsoft to actually unlock the system and almost a year for Microsoft to start bringing their big titles such as Halo MCC and Minecraft to the console. The Chinese government have since then made the approval process easier, saying that they will now approve games in 20 days, but Microsoft still need to fully translate and localise each game into Simplified Chinese and censor and remove any violence or sex gameplay that doesn’t fit the cultural rules set out by the government. This is why games like GTA5 are banned in China and why some big titles such as Gears of War for Xbox One have not launched in the country.

Sony have been a bit more successful with their PlayStation 4 launch and are said to have already outsold the Xbox One despite launching 6 months later. The console launched unlocked which means that gamers in China can import any worldwide game to play. However Sony has still suffered with low sales due to the lack of games and it’s only now that we are starting to see big games like Warframe and Gravity Rush remastered hit the console, but Sony’s big hitters such as Uncharted and Bloodborne are yet to be seen on the console due to censorship laws. Final Fantasy X/X-2 is currently the best selling console game for PS4 in China. The exact split between PS4 and Xbox One is not known but we do know that the Xbox One has sold more than 100,000 units. It has been confirmed that the PlayStation 4 has sold more than the Xbox One though.

It is worth noting that the consoles sold by Oriental Pearl are official Chinese versions and these numbers do not include import consoles from Japan, Asia, Europe and the US. This is a very big reason as to why the number is also very low as a lot of Chinese gamers will import their console from overseas."

Unsurprising, considering all the restrictions China has on game releases. I wonder if the Chinese government will slowly ease up at some point.

Officially disappointing, but isn't the gray market huge there? These numbers may not translate into the reality.

Edit:

Strictly anecdotal, but nearly every mall I've gone to in Northeast China sells copies of games imported from Japan and Hong Kong (including banned games like GTA V). The one time I've seen a store not sell gray market games and systems was at a Lenovo store in Beijing.

Nintendo missing a slice of this noticeable market here, something that will only get bigger.

If just 0.01% of China buys Gravity Rush Remastered, it'll do quite well.
If just 0.01% of China buys Shenmue 3, Sega will make back the cost of Shenmue 1 and 2 and how ever much they lost on the Saturn and Genesis add-ons!!

Square's efforts for the Chinese market with FF has at least shown some positive results with FFX.

Dunno how big FFXIV is there.

Of my 10 chinese friends, 9 of them bought a PS4/X1 digitally, so the install base is clearly 5 million.

Did not know China has so few people.
To be honest, I'm not that surprised. Chinese government is extremely repressive and they're trying to find that fine line with something that's been alien to their general populace for some time. Banning huge releases like GTA doesn't help.

Nintendo were in the market long before Sony and Microsoft with devices made specifically for the market. Really, given that the wii u is clearly on its way out and Nintendo probably have their own market research on China, they are probably looking at the best time to strike with the NX.

Whats the 1% joke from? Did a quick google search but cant find it. Also I dont really know what it is about.
When Xbox One was the only console launching in China somebody on GAF was saying that if just 1% of the chinese population bought it then it would be beating the Xbox One.

Good I guess... well maybe not that good.

Xbone 100k was the first shipment and there is no data that proves they shipped more.

Most sales is probably PS4.

Im sorry but the general populace in China does not care about videogames. in fact they dont usually care about western entertainment either. Only a portion of the city middle class are into those and they are a minority.

the reason is not simply government censorship but also xenophobia, language barrier, familiarity and other factors (some of which could be argued to be the same reason though). Blaming everything on the government is a lazy conclusion, but thats what the western media has told you guys about China right?...

fake edit: in China you can still buy GTA5 on steam with lower price in RMB, and through the official Steam storefront. Rumor has it that the storefront is not banned because DOTA2...

I dunno, I think selling 499,999 PlayStation 4s in China is pretty good going for them.

Impressive but they need to get the ball rolling faster on the approval process.
Sounds like the biggest hurdle.

Shame we don't know the splits and I hope this bundle does well.
