"Shanghai Oriental Pearl today announced that Sonys PlayStation 4 and Microsofts Xbox One have reached a total of 500,000 owners in China (Mainland). This comes over a year since the launch of the Xbox One which originally launched back in September 2014 and 8 months after the PlayStation 4 launch in March of this year. Sales have been disappointing for the two consoles in China with neither of the two being able to drastically increase the presence of consoles in the country despite the government recently legalising the sale of dedicated gaming systems. Oriental Pearl, the company that distributes both the PS4 and XB1 in China, said that they hope to reach over 1 million owners in 2016 through the continued release of software titles and enhanced digital services.
Shanghai Oriental Pearl have said that the price of consoles, lack of big software titles, censorship from the Government and long approval times have been the primary reasons for the lack of console sales in China. When the Xbox One launched in China it only launched with around 10 launch titles that were region locked, it took until April for Microsoft to actually unlock the system and almost a year for Microsoft to start bringing their big titles such as Halo MCC and Minecraft to the console. The Chinese government have since then made the approval process easier, saying that they will now approve games in 20 days, but Microsoft still need to fully translate and localise each game into Simplified Chinese and censor and remove any violence or sex gameplay that doesnt fit the cultural rules set out by the government. This is why games like GTA5 are banned in China and why some big titles such as Gears of War for Xbox One have not launched in the country.
Sony have been a bit more successful with their PlayStation 4 launch and are said to have already outsold the Xbox One despite launching 6 months later. The console launched unlocked which means that gamers in China can import any worldwide game to play. However Sony has still suffered with low sales due to the lack of games and its only now that we are starting to see big games like Warframe and Gravity Rush remastered hit the console, but Sonys big hitters such as Uncharted and Bloodborne are yet to be seen on the console due to censorship laws. Final Fantasy X/X-2 is currently the best selling console game for PS4 in China. The exact split between PS4 and Xbox One is not known but we do know that the Xbox One has sold more than 100,000 units. It has been confirmed that the PlayStation 4 has sold more than the Xbox One though.
It is worth noting that the consoles sold by Oriental Pearl are official Chinese versions and these numbers do not include import consoles from Japan, Asia, Europe and the US. This is a very big reason as to why the number is also very low as a lot of Chinese gamers will import their console from overseas."
Unsurprising, considering all the restrictions China has on game releases. I wonder if the Chinese government will slowly ease up at some point.
