PS4/XBO graphics being underestimated?

Hey 'bro', Kameo never came out for original Xbox. That is a screenshot in development for the Xbox 360, but no one knew the new consoles name at the time. I will replace the image with an image 'post launch', just know that Knack isn't finished or released either.

It was originally in development for the Xbox. This is the screenshot for the Xbox version not the 360 version. You should read up on the development of the game. It was later moved to the 360 and improved dramatically.

Interesting...

Yeap, definitely just a PS3 game with candy sprinkles on them...
If anyone says that it's because Infamous 3 looks like the Infamous 2 bullshots.

I'd say people are overestimating ps4 and xbone. between mobile like cpu's , low power consumption, ram hungry operating systems and a lower launch price the ps4 and xbone fail to impress compared to the debut of ps3 and 360.

Why didn't the op just post second son screens considering thats the same genre of game

That's not a development shot from the XBOX360. That's an original XBOX shot.

You know Kameo also existed on Nintendo Gamecube, right?

The 360 version looks much better than that in development XBOX shot you posted.

Considering how many AAA developers/publishers that were shuttered or are currently struggling this past gen it's starting to look like consoles can't support them either.

That's actually something I can't argue with. But I counter by saying imagine what would happen if we DIDN'T have consoles?

Honestly the fact is most of these amazing looking graphics we want cost too fucking much, regardless of platform.

Maybe in slow motion. The framerate is butts. So glad that current gen consoles are getting kicked to the curb.
I'm not sure this will change all that much. Rockstar North is a company that has always released products with poor framerates.

With the right sacrifices you can still meet your goals with a stable framerate. Look at something like Drive SF on consoles; the game is an open world driving game operating at 60 fps. Does it looks as nice as GTAV? No, but they made the choice to target a higher framerate over everything else.

I fear that next-gen will be more of the same with developers pushing their engines too far once again resulting in framerate dips.

I knew about it for Gamecube. It was shown as a potential game on the back of my Gamecube box lol. I swapped out the image for a post launch Xbox 360 one.

The PC port of Max Payne 3 ran like a boss, so maybe there's hope for them on next gen consoles. Or maybe they'll use the new hardware for better lighting that tanks the framerate. Who knows.

This next gen was never about massive leaps in power like the NES to SNES to PS1 to PS2. To me it is about perfecting the 60 FPS 720/1080p game. We finally have the CPU/GPU/RAM to do that full justice every time with loads of background features. It's all about features like video sharing and all. That what will be the big leap.

Folks were also complaining about last-gen games looking like PS2 games, particularly Sony fans about early 360 games. I remember Shane Battenhausen describing some games' visuals as Dreamcast level graphics (namely Eternal Sonata).

Patience is a virtue.

edit: and that's even without getting into the whole modding thing. GTA enjoys a strong PC modding community. They've done some good things with GTA IV.

i'll be honest and say GTA NEVER looked like that when my friend played it on PS3. Looks like a completely different game.

It also ran well on consoles but it wasn't a Rockstar North production.

ps4/xbo graphics are being overestimated.

Wrong, they are being underestimated on a massive scale and a lot of people will be eating crow next gen. Especially when you start to see ground up AAA development begin for next gen.

The new consoles take a massive shit on current gen consoles in terms of specs. Don't compare ps4 to a high end pc, compare it to an Xbox 360.

Compare the APU, GPU, RAM whatever.

If Last of Us, Grand Theft Auto V, and others are representative of what is possible with the shitty 7-8 year old hardware we have now, what can they do with the power of the ps4 and XbOne. It blows my mind anyone is disappointed. PC gamers should be jumping for joy at the ports and games they'll get from these new consoles.

It's the same vein as these statements:

Uncharted 3 was absolutely awful.
COD looks a gen behind.
Anything under 60 FPS is unplayable.

I'm sure there's many more. The use of a hyperbole isn't something new...

None of these statements are hyperbole. You just don't agree with them.

The new consoles are nice...but not quite the leap I would expect for the nearly two generations worth of time we've waited since the release of their predecessors (Xbox to Xbox 360 was 4 years). But that's ok, these companies don't need to hemorrhage money for my entertainment.

Of course they will, because trailers and screenshots sell games. Framerate doesn't. Even in a hardcore gaming forum like Neogaf, 85% of the people are absolutetly fine with framerates sub30FPS. Same for resolution. They just don't give a fuck, so why should the dev?

Why shouldn't I compare it to my middle class rig if that is what I am playing on now for almost 2 years? If I'm buying a new gaming machine, I compare it to the one I'm currently using. And so far, the results are sub par for both consoles, XB1 trailing behind even more, it's a joke machine for 500$ if you ask me.

Yeah I was debating whether to use Knack or Project Spark or whatever. I wanted something that was sort of third person adventure type. Using Infamous 3 wouldn't be as fair against Kameo. There are other Knack pictures that are better, but I wanted a grassy picture.

Knack isn't exactly an AAA game, it's a small project by Cerny and his team and really limited. Compare Kameo to something like Ryse: Son of Rome then.

What info do you have to back this up ? Its obviously AAA given the amount of marketing. At least as far as japanese production is concerned its a pretty major game that could become a franchise.

Sony, Cerny and a few of their other PR people have mentioned it a few times. That it's by a smaller team and had less development time and resources allocated to it.

I really wouldn't consider Knack AAA at all. It's a small game from a small team, by Cernys own words. I'm still not even sure it's going to be a $60 game. But we are back in the murky world of trying to define a game by some letters.

I should add, I've been looking forward to it since the start, unlike most people.

The way i see it, look at the end of gen games they look very very good, now we have a machine what ten times better or more i can only have wet dreams over what my eyes are going to be seeing in year 2-3-4 etc.

It's sort of from Cerny himself. I think like 6 guys at Studio Japan have taken the reins on the game. They oversee almost all of the game themselves but obviously they have people under them to help, but it's a smaller game, not a huge budget, not many resources. He's never compared it to like a Legend of Zelda or Halo type system seller game.

It's mainly a throwback game to older generations, helps bridge the hardcore/casual gamer together. Sure it could be a franchise, but this is not an AAA game like Killzone or Infamous. This game doesn't have tens to over hundred million+ dollars and massive 200-400+ people working on the game etc.

Edit: I'm looking forward to it as well, and I don't like AAA either, but it's just an industry term.

Developers aren't complaining. I think people get too caught up in numbers and forget that these devs are great at extracting performance from hardware. Well, some of them. Look at the stuff we have with the current gen. Halo 4, The Last of Us, Uncharted. I'm going into the next generation with no worries.

I also think things will be more clear about two years down the line. Launch games are not a good indicator of anything.

Of course they are, as all consoles are. Who would have thought Uncharted 3 or Halo 4 could run on x1900 with some 2000 series features/geforce 7800-7600 hybrid type cards?

Who would have thought we would get games that look as good as Beyond Two Souls on the PS3? It looks better than almost anything on the system.

Also, GT6 reportedly runs at a 1440x1080 resolution at 60 frames per second. That's on the PS3.

The fact we are getting games that look so good on the get go is a sign that things can only go up from here.

As I said, people will be eating crow. Games from a year or two will look better than anything released <2013.

It'll be more apparent in motion.

Of course. As we've seen already. Still doesn't make it as apparent as with previous new consoles.

But as I said, who cares? Games will look great, they'll look better than anything we have now (outside PCs) and we'll all be happy and content forever more
hahaha

I just can't think this way as a gamer. Look at the launch lineup of PS360 and look at all the great, new experiences we got this generation when it began with a bunch of sports games, and racers. How can you be so negative about gaming when there are clearly some very talented, creative, and capable people in this industry about to play around with new and exciting hardware?

It's so sad that gamers are so damn cynical sometimes.

I'm just talking about what we've been shown as of today. I'm sure there will be amazing games down the line. Like I said, except The Division (which will probably see a graphical downgrade like almost every Ubisoft games), I have not been impressed (graphically) by the games announced right now mostly because there's nothing really new they're doing (still speaking only about the graphics). More polys and more particles effects wiiiiiiiii! The Deep Down fire is really cool though.

I think the point is if you just brought it to next gen as it is now but made it 1080p and 60fps (or even a locked 30fps I guess) it would already be more impressive than most next gen games shown so far.

Because nice graphics mean jack shit when it comes at the expense of good gameplay which seems to happen with 95% of games released.

Nobody is going to give a shit about how pretty these games look until the gameplay can stand alongside it. Which other than a handful of games is just never going to happen when you need to sell 5 million copies to break even.

Launch games are never the best indicator of the potential in these machines. By year 3 we will be seeing games we previously thought impossible on these consoles. It's always the same cycle and doubters always eat crow.

DriveClub is pushing things much further than any racing game released before it, console or PC.

60-120fps locked?

Simulation level real time physics?

Tire wear, breakdowns, buying snacks at the gas station?

Great to hear it's pushing things further than any racing game EVER.

Technical performance and gameplay go hand in hand. So does graphics. You can't seperate one factor, a great game is always the sum of it's parts.

Given that the architecture for both consoles is better known than what the PS360 were using, isn't there probably going to be less of a graphical leap from the start to the end of this gen, compared to the start and end of PS360 gen?

It just seems kind of annoying when people say "look at the difference between PS360 games at launch and now 8 years later. PS4 / X1 games are going to look that much better from start to finish", because developers don't have to learn as much over time as with PS360.

I just wonder if I'm right to think that those kind of arguments are silly.

True that they don't have to learn multithreading or the ins and outs of crazy architectures like Cell again, but there is still a shittonne (I measured) of headroom to go. They have to learn how best to use 8 cores, they have to learn the best ways to extract performance from Graphics Core next, they have to learn the best ways to balance advanced SIMD instructions on Jaguar...I could go on. It won't be like the 7th generation in scope, but they'll still improve a hell of a lot.
